Guys, you'll appreciate this song (and entire album, really) when you realize that this was released in 1976, with that kind of incredible production/engineering recorded in a self-built basement studio by 2 guys: Brad Delp (all lead & harmony vocals), and Tom Scholz (songwriter & all instruments except drums). Scholz, a graduate of M.I.T, worked days as an engineer for Kodak Corp. and spent nights building his studio & recording demo tapes. He invented his own guitar pedals to produce the sounds that he wanted (did you notice how that pick slide stood out?). Next needs to be "Smokin'" and "Hitch a Ride".

It went platinum in 30 days! No band has ever done that to date! By now it must have sold close to a billion copies! How did they record this so well? The guitar player invented his own sound equipment to get that sound! Amazing!!

  • @chrisbricky7331

This band is Tom Scholz on every instrument, recorded in his basement with old, borrowed, invented equipment and Brad Delp on vocals. The album was complete before a record deal was signed. The record company had a producer look it over and added a drummer for things here and there. But Tom Scholz, MIT genius invented the Rock Guitar pedal system for this album. He wrote every song, played every instrument, produced the music, was the sound engineer, etc. The record company would not sign him until he hired a band and taught them to play the songs.
To really hear the guitar pedal and how he used it so well check out 'Hitch a Ride' in one solo he is switching the pedal and sound every few bars so you get a good idea how the invention worked. He was not only putting out the album but selling his product to every guitarist around.
So every organ solo, every base line, every rhythm guitar or lead guitar and some of the drums and back ground vocals is one guy. Tom Scholz. The vocals are Brad Delp and he is amazing and one of a kind. His harmonizing with the lead guitar with his vocals is unreal.
Thanks for the great reaction and sharing.

This song never fails to remind me of my first true adult love. I was in my early 20's and her and I met at work and the whole crew decided to go out to a local bar and shoot pool until 2am. Her and I kept bumping into each other at the juke box and fir the next two years we were damned near inseparable. This is one if the few songs that would bring out her sweet side and make her smile so big. But, just like Brad having to watch his Marianne walking away, I had to watch my Amy walk out of my life. The song always makes my heart twinge a little (remorse) as a smile comes to my lips... It is more than just a great song, it is a beautiful song...

When you think Brad has hit his highest note and then goes even higher. I love seeing people react to that!

My first concert was Boston at WSU in WA state in 1978. Boston had just completed world tour and was finally back home and they were pumped just like we were and sounded just like their albums! We couldn't sleep after seeing them!

Those ringing guitars, yeah! So good. Loved being a kid and teen in the 70s! I love how his voice gets higher and higher and you can't tell where the guitar begins and his voice ends!

In 1976.....this was truly stunning. Right from the "I closed my eye, and I slipped away," blending into the guitar. Completely unique. I sat at the radio turning the dial until I found it again! Way before internet. You had no idea who they were, or if you'd ever hear it again!

The entire album is great. Power rock at its best. Tom Scholz is a musical and engineering/production genius and singer Brad Delp (RIP) is so underrated. Please react to other great tunes on the debut album - Peace of Mind, Foreplay/Long Time, Smokin', Rock and Roll Band, Let Me Take You Home Tonight and, especially, Hitch A Ride.
