      The local Album Rock FM station was playing the whole album late at night about a week ahead of the albums release...and I recorded it on my cassette deck to play in my truck to and from college. The day the LP was released, I had to stand in line to get my copy. I played this album so much that I wore out two copies of the vinyl album. I have it...and all of Boston's other albums on CD...and keep them in my SUV now. I still get goosebumps when I listen to their albums!!
      Thanks for the great reaction... it's the same reaction I had nearly 45 years ago...I was in awe of their talent!

    Tom Scholtz is the lead guitarist, and he is epic. His regular job was an engineer at Kodak, the film people. He composed the songs and produced and recorded the entire album in his basement studio that he put together HIMSELF! No auto-tune. No pitch correction. No computers, just Tom's talent with the instruments and the recording equipment, and Brad Delp, who is possibly the best rock vocalist of all time. I think the part that astounded you early in the song was that there was a high guitar note that brad took over with his voice and then the guitar took it up a notch and then Brad took it back and took it higher. At one point, "I close my EYES and she slips away. She slips awaayyyy-ayyy AYYYY" He goes right up to a D5 and you think that's all there is, and he goes another step up to an E5! The man had a FOUR octave range!

    The guy who wrote the song also played ALL THE INSTRUMENTS, and also recorded himself playing the instruments (he might have mixed the audio too), and he even designed, engineered, and BUILT the audio equipment that modifies the sound of the guitars. This is why Boston has such a unique sound. They are the only band in the world with that equipment. Also, there is only one singer (Brad Delp) and he sings all parts.

  • @chrisbricky7331
    @chrisbricky7331 Před 4 lety +116

    Boston is really just one person. Tom Scholz the lead guitarist wrote the entire album. Played every instrument on the album. Sang all the backup vocals on the album. Recorded the album in his basement with old equipment, equipment he bought and equipment he invented and made himself. He was also the sound engineer and the producer. His friend Brad Delp is the lead vocalist. Minus one song this album was finished before a record company ever heard it.
    Every song on this album is great. Tom invented the rock guitar pedal that allows for various sound changes to the range of music a guitar can change instantly instead of having to change guitar or tune it, etc.
    Now every musician that plays a stringed instrument uses the pedal system he invented.
    Great reaction. Thanks for sharing. chris

      You can no longer see Boston live or at least this version since lead singer Brad Delp died. Sadly he had a very unique voice and singing style.
      Every single song on the first album is amazing. You can literally play it from start to finish, More than a Feeling is the first song on the album, followed by Peace of Mind then Foreplay/Longtime then Rock and Roll Band, and on and on.

The compositional quality, performance, recording techniques, vocal harmonies, volume dynamics, guitar distortion, and energy in these songs was more than the average young person's mind could comprehend and contain. We had never heard anything like it. I was 21 at the time, and when their songs came on the radio, we'd get so excited we couldn't control ourselves! We would scream, and have to pull the car over! As a senior citizen, maybe you can now understand why my generation thinks that today's music is garbage, compared to our generation's music. We had fantastic bands that didn't have auto tune, or any of the other BS stuff that they have today. We had great groups, like The Righteous Brothers, Boston, Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkle, Spanky and Our Gang, The Four Tops, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Stylistics, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Donovan, Dylan, The Moody Blues, The Grass Roots, The Mamas and the Papas, Abba, Buffalo Springfield, Carly Simon, Carol King, and the list is endless. Every week, a group would release a new song that went to number one, and we all had transistor radios, and we would listen to all of this music. Today's generation has no idea of how great our music was....unless, like you, they go back and listen to it. I bought the Beatles Anthology many years ago, and my daughter asked if she could listen to it, so I played it for her. After listening to all of the songs on it, she asked me if she could have the two CDs, so I gave them to her and bought another set of them. You have just listened to how great music was back in the day, and nothing today can ever compare to that type of music. Our music didn't contain vulgar words, it was just pure music, and the melodies of our music transcends time, as you have noticed.
    Anyway, thank you for taking the time to listen to the music from my generation, and reacting to it. If more people would do that, they would reject the crap that is being put out these days, and demand the type of music that my generation experienced.

      I say basically the same thing as often and as loudly as I can, in the hopes of rescuing some kids from the spiritual poison called rap and hip hop. It isn't even music but rather repetitious chants of boring, violent and vulgar GARBAGE!
      And then one rapper murders another one routinely! If that is what they think music should be about then they belong in prison! And if they murder ANYONE they should be executed! Period! This is what music corporations have foisted on kids with simpleton intellects. It is helping to destroy our civilization and turning out an ever larger and new generation of criminals. You will eventually become what you listen to. Really!

    • @benx104
      @benx104 Před 2 lety +2

      One man's garbage is another man's masterpiece. You should know that by now. And all of those "great" groups were influenced, or stole from even greater black groups, that really influences today's music, as well as yesterday's tunes. And most of that music, back in the day, was really garbage, but people got to know those songs because they were forced fed to listening audiences on a daily basis through radio, when that was all that was available to listen to. There are songs today, that would put a lot of older songs to shame, which are the ones you hear the most on all of these talent shows, being covered. Once in a while you'd hear an older song being covered, which is rare. So just stop it.

    In the 70s there were 7 of us and our girlfriends and whenever Boston was in concert within 250 miles of us we went to the concerts. I saw them numerous times in Raleigh and Durham, NC, Charlotte, NC, Atlanta GA, Bristol TN and Nashville TN. Back then in the mid to late 70s there was no "white and black music. It was just (our) music. Our music then as now only had positive meanings. It's great to see all these podcasts finding out now what we have known for almost 50 years

    You're right--Boston is upbeat, positive music and so are their lyrics. They deal with everyday life in a way that anyone can relate to, but they are uplifting, and anytime you're in a bad mood, put on a Boston record, because they are like sunshine on a cloudy day

    Tom Sholtz was an MIT graduate and worked for Poloroid. After he left Poloroid he created electronics to get their sound. Rock bands from all over purchased his creations to get that great guitar sound. He also self taught himself to play the guitar. He produced this whole album in his basement and played most of the instruments on these songs.
