    I'm new to ham radios and just started to study for Technician class license. I bought this radio today so I can listen to my Hang Gliding buddies when we fly. I can find out where the good lift is. I look forward to passing my exam so I can transmit also. Your videos was informative and to the point. I like the cheat sheet idea as well. thanks for posting.

    I watched this soon after getting my FT60, found it helpful. I could add that for me, one of the best functions on this rig is the memory bank system. Exceptionally easy to set up and makes selective scanning so easy. This a very versatile little radio indeed - it's a 100% keeper. Mine also gets used as a sometime mobile radio with a magmount and a lapel mike. If mine broke today I'd buy a replacement tomorrow, it's that good.

    Hi Phillip!
    Thank you for your very informative video on the Yeasu FT-60. Very straightforward and succinct. This radio is by far the most well-built HT I have ever owned. I have the old Icoms from the late 1970s' and just recently added this unit to my collection.

    hello phil remember me? im the guy that had the ft 60 with the internal speaker not working, well i split the case and found the prob it seems that these radios speaker is mounted on the plastic case and makes contac with the board with two tads that stick up off the board not with wires so long story short
    one of the metal tabs was not makeing contac with the speaker so i bent the tab and to my suprise it works so now alls i need to do is replace the battery and it will work as good as new so yes i guess i did git a good deal for $25.00, thanks for the help on learning to program it 73s John...K6JRD

    Philip, does using this radio _require_ an "Amateur Radio License" (i think it is called "technician license)? Or is a license just "highly recommended"?

    • @philip
      @philip  Před 10 lety

      Hi, Peter. US Federal law makes it illegal to transmit on ham radio frequencies without being licensed to do so. You may use ham radios to listen to the transmissions of hams, but you may not transmit unless you have a license.
      I don't speak for other countries and their laws.

    • @philip
      @philip  Před 5 lety +1

      You're not supposed to transmit the tone unless you're controlling a repeater or using it to patch you in to the phone system.You'll have people calling and saying 'turn off WIRES!'

    • @philip
      @philip  Před 4 lety

      Hi, Ricky. If you go to 4:42 on the video, I show how to enter frequencies for receive. Since you won't be transmitting, you don't need to worry about offsets and CTCSS.

    • @philip
      @philip  Před 10 lety +1

      Here ya go!
      1. Press the [V/M(PRI)] key, if needed, to enter the MR mode.
      2. Press and hold in the [F/W] key for one second, then rotate the DIAL knob to select the memory channel to be “deleted.”
      3. Press the [HM/RV] key momentarily. The display will revert to memory channel #1.
      The previously-selected memory will be deleted.

    I would like to know how you went about to get the program information on to the 4 x 6 cards. I think it would be a great help for most most hams and especially the new hams.

    • @philip
      @philip  Před 9 lety +2

      Step 1, I read the manual. Step 2, I use a word processor to type up a summary of the information I need on the 4x6 cards. The word processor I use (Mariner Write) lets me format pages for a variety of sizes, including 4x6.

    I’m looking at maybe purchasing this radio. I have a very old xv 5r
    The power button on the xv 5r is very hard to turn on so my question is this radio have a power button or does it turn on by a switch?

    • @philip
      @philip  Před 4 lety +1

      If you look at the video at about 5 seconds in, you'll see the on/off - volume knob between the antenna and the channel selector knob. It's easy. I, too, have an XV-5R, and you definitely won't be turning it on or off accidentally. That button is buried.

      Turn the radio off.Press and hold in the MONI switch (just below the PTT switch)
      while turning the radio on.
      Rotate the DIAL knob to select one choice from the reset menu:
      F1 SETRST: Resets the Set (Menu) mode settings to their factory defaults.
      F2 MEMRST:Clears the Memory settings to factory defaults.
      F3MBRST: ClearstheMemoryBankAssignments.
      F4 ALLRST: Clears all memories and other settings to factory defaults.
      Press the [F/W] key momentarily to complete the reset procedure.
      This is copied from the manual.
