  • I tried to obtain a rare japanese GameCube demo disc and show it to you all.
    But I ended up buying the wrong one. And actually discovering something I definitely wasn't expecting to find on a demo disc.
    Many thanks to ConnorRentz for the documentation about these discs.

    Honestly from a technical standpoint a web browser is what makes the most sense for this kind of program, not only from a cost/time prospective but also from a features prospective. Also to recover the full browser out of it i think some complex reverse engieneering needs to be put into this, it can be as easy modifiy a few bytes here and there to enable unused code pieces. But i think that it's very likely that the code to run all the browser features was left entirely out of the disk, so in that case either a new browser must be created from scratch or an existing some (able to run on gc level hw) must be ported

    PSO's web browser is interesting, as it's a completely different kind of browser. If you look in the files there's an INI file that has a few settings, with options for using a real keyboard, setting the background color, the homepage, and even enabling Javascript and plugins! I haven't personally tried tweaking it though, since the game encrypts what webpages you can go on in the memory card it seems. The browser was only supposed to be used for purchasing a Hunter's License, AKA the sub.

    • @AdrianDX
      @AdrianDX Před 2 lety +3

      The PSO browser simply works with keyboards. I used mine while setting up IP/DNS settings etc. all the time.

    Hello fellow Nintendo Gamecube Soft e-Catalog 2003 Spring disk owner!! I just saw your video through a Reddit post and was like "I OWN THAT DISK!!" I'm so glad you're mentioning ConnorRentz's article on it, I also referred to their article when I dumped the disk over on the Internet Archive - if anyone else wants to check out the demo disk contents as well. Uh I dunno if I should link it because spam filter but it's there I promise.
    Just one correction: this disk came with RUNE 2 (known as Lost Kingdoms 2 overseas), Pokemon Box, AND Family Stadium 2003. The info can be found going through the Wayback Machine on Nintendo's Japanese website. Also funny story I also didn't mean to get this disk (I wanted a CIB copy of RUNE 2's demo OTL) but, it was so neat to learn about the browser within so it was all worth it.

    Cool content, in regards to actually making the browser, it would probably require rebuilding the source from a rip like this via reverse engineering, then expanding.
    Major theme there would be that whoever takes on the task would need at least the Gamecube's development software, though I presume it could be done with some of the homebrew tools too.

    A little add on! Sega actually made a very basic one for pso ep 1 and 2. It’s hidden in network setting and advertisement but it’s there. It just wasn’t made by Nintendo! It’s similar to how the ps5 has one, u just can’t access it unless under certain conditions or needs in a piece of software. Like needing it to sign into services like Spotify to pay.

    I'm not surprised that the demo discs are HTML-based. Many game demo discs for PC also used HTML front-end. Around that time, at least in the US, there was a demand for HTML programming as more and more companies were finally pushing to have an online presence. If you weren't fluent in HTML, you couldn't even get a job repairing home computers because they wanted someone who could also design/maintain a website. Also, in the late-90s, HTML was often called "the programming language of the future." 🤣 HTML was easy enough to write, since you could use literally any text editor on any platform, and your code was saved as a text file, for easy transport via floppy discs, tape backup, or dialup internet.
