Ford Racing 2 was important - and cereal box games were special

  • This is a video about a budget arcade racing game I found in a cereal box: Ford Racing 2.
Yes, a free cereal box game. The 90s/early 2000s were definitely... peculiar.
In this video, I'll tell you why I think this specific game is important, in my opinion, and make a detailed review of it. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the "real cereal experience".

Wow, I couldn't even remember what racing game I used to play as a kid on our family laptop, and here it is (I wasn't sure until I saw that loading screen with the cars). You've really thrown me back to growing up with these weird promotional games in the 2000s.
I know I'm not exactly old, but I wonder what on earth a kid born in 2015 would have thought about our period's offerings of games and internet, I had dial-up till 2008 in rural England. It almost makes you feel lost even talking to people only a few years younger than me as so much changed so quickly.

I had this same exact Nestle branded disc as a kid. One bit of additional info on the game's team:
Dave Sullivan, the sound designer, previously worked on Magnetic Fields (as a composer), then Mind's Eye Productions, Razorworks, and briefly at Juice Games. Today, he works at Codemasters.

back in mid-2006 I got Ford Racing 3 on a cereal box. It was really especial for me since here in LATAM having games on Cereal.Boxes wasn't really common, toys and few collectobles yes, but not PC CD ROM Games.

I remember mother bought this game in 2008 on my 9th birthday. I've always been a huge fan of Ford cars, so this was the first game that called my attention, along with The Simpsons Hit and Run (which I already had on the GameCube lol). It's a good part of my late 00's/early 10's memories and it's very cheap on the PS2 version, just under $5, so I bought it back.

Watching this reminds me of a promotion we had over here in Kuwait, back when I lived there. I remember, around 2012, Hardees, or some other chain restaurant had bundled their burgers with a copy of Backyard Skateboarding for desktops with a bunch of huge skateboarding legends [just as kids] (an Atari game, if my memory serves me right) and the concept of getting a PC game disk blew my mind at the time. I do miss the really weird and wacky ways they could promote or distribute games with physical media that just doesn't feel right in the digital era anymore.
But, I digress! Really good video about a rather niche topic. And that's why I keep coming back for more of these videos!

I had Ford Racing 3 as a kid, and (despite also having Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec - I was terrible at that game) it was basically my Gran Turismo growing up. Maybe more accurately my Forza. It felt realistic enough to stand out without breaking my balls, showed a genuine love for cars young/old/weak/strong/small/big I'd never been able to appreciate before, and probably awakened my obsession with collecting EVERY toy a game lets you play with. It's a weirdly important game to me, and I love it.

With as many racing sims as we have access to these days, I like games that put an emphasis on fictional circuits. It's the main reason why I only played the new Forza for about a week. Nothing about the game was remarkable compared to other sims I have, and at least in old Forza games (particularly FM3 for me) the fictional circuits were the most memorable part. In the new one, they're all kinda boring. Every racing game now is trying to do more or less the same thing, so they all blur together. I have more respect for an old budget racing game that can at least set itself apart in that way.

Man, are you cereal? if I knew I could've gotten the Starsky & Hutch game from a cereal box I would've been first in line to eat those day in, day out. I think it's a huge shame games don't tend to often release demos these days, but on the bright side, I have seen Ubisoft come out with more trials recently. Even Driver: San Francisco (on consoles) had a demo, but it's not accessible anymore, at least on PS3. PC was completely disregarded as well. This is a nice segue as well, to how special it was with the damage modelling on the amount of licensed cars it had, also probably why it's no longer on sale anywhere.
For an older game from '03, Ford Racing 2 looks cool though, from vehicle modelling (CROWN VIC :O) and environment standpoint. Those tracks are especially cool. Doesn't really hold a candle to its peers but, until now I hadn't even heard about it so nice job with the vidya.

Probably one of the only games I ever made a total 180 of what my opinion on it was. I had this game as a kid, not from a cereal box on PC (My brother's PC could barely handle 3D anyway), but on the PS2. I used to HATE and I mean HATE this game when I was kid. I thought the idea of the challenges was stupid and I just wanted to do plain races which you can't do without unlocking the tracks & cars from the challenge mode first.
Through my now adult lens I'm far more fond of it now. Mainly because the handling model is pretty satisfying and the challenges are a good test of your driving (which wouldn't work if the driving itself felt bad). Clearly Razorworks knew what they were doing and knew their limitations when it came to making a budget game. Ford Racing 3 was pretty cool too, but I can't speak about any of the other Ford games. It also helps that FR2 still surprisingly scales nicely to modern PCs. The game relies on WMA playback so you'll need to install the Windows Media Source Filter on newer versions of Windows, but aside from that it runs flawlessly with 1080p and 144fps support right out the gate.

Probably the first game I finished, I got it on a cereal box as well and I still got it at home 🖤

I had the Ford Racing 2 and 3 in PS2, but also I remembered a year's after I got FR3 in cereal from Kelloggs, in fact I thought that were done, but seems the most fun of allf from the Detroit manufacturer

I remember getting GP vs. SuperBike on one of my Koko Krunch boxes, among a few other non-racing games. Nowadays I'm aware of its status as a crappy game among everyone else, but when I was little, I enjoyed spending some time playing it on my computer.
