Actually even the the MC200 was very good. Or the G.50,cr.42,cr32 managed to shoot down some more modern planes. All the Reggianes were great, the MC205 same, also the G55.
@@McRocketHad they produced the engine earlier , under license of course , things might have been different in the North African theatre. Problem was that the Italians didn’t have the industrial capacity to produce significant numbers of engines, let alone planes. Regarding the 202 , for the life of me , I don’t know what their military command was thinking to have it so lightly armed. Only two 50 caliber guns. Seriously ? The mc205 and Fiat g55 addressed that issue and they were formidably armed , but too little ,too late!
"....Sleek, supremely fast - the sight of their high, white-crossed fin would have struck fear into our hearts had the Italians pressed home their attacks. The odd pilot proved that the 202 was capable of mixing it in a dogfight - out-turning our P-40s with ease; but the majority would pull away effortlessly into a climbing roll or a roll off the top when things became at all hectic. There is nothing more exasperating, when you are caning fifty-four inches of boost out of an engine, than to see your enemy indulge in carefree aerobatics; but although we did our damnedest to get near enough to shoot at them,we seldom succeeded. Their aircraft was superior to ours on all counts. No wonder we wanted to fly one...." RAF Squadron Leader S/L D.H. Clarke (RAF)
Italy had some fantastic aircraft firms, beautiful aircraft, with the C.205, Re.2005 and G.55 it would have been interesting to see how they might have developed later on in the war as in 1943 they were all on par or better than any other nations fighters
It's astounding to see such good quality film of these rare aircraft. Thank you for sharing it. I've never before seen movie footage of the Macchi 202 in action.
Questi splendidi filmati , restaurati andrebbero mostrati su schermo al pubblico , nei musei di Vigna di Valle od al Caproni di Trento . Complimenti per il lavoro splendido .
My late uncle used to tell me in Africa he would see dog fights low altitude between these italian plains against British planes and beat them every time . Lots of aerobatics on the Italian side
Great stuff! ... One 'tough-arse'-looking warbird! ... Have seen a number of your rare WWII Italian warplane videos now - where do you find all this excellent footage?! Thanks so much for posting!
Bellissimo video pieno di spunti anche modellistici , adoro il macchi 202 , sarebbe stato un ottimo aereo con un armamento migliore , ma anche con 2 safat da 12.7 era un bel velivolo da caccia che teneva testa allo spit V
Many people as you name this aircraft "underarmed" but...the standard version had 2x12,7 + 2x7,7 and the 12,7s had shells piercing and explosive while the contemp orary his adversary only piercing...so this difference reduces much the gap,I think, and let you understan d how it is less underarmed than you could say.
This aircraft was a beauty and an excellent piece of italian design - I can not understand how engineer Castoldi commited the blatant design flaw seen at 2:52. If you want to improve pilot's back view, then the upper keel should habe been eliminated and a bubble-style back canopy installed to avoid that drag-inducting gap between canopy and fuselage.
italian pilots have a long experienced with open cockpit during spain war an schneider experience. They love to fly using the "wind noise". Castoldi have an hard time to convince them to the closed cockpit concept. As far as i understood they later add the canopy more like an "after thought" and here we are with that.... keep in mind that italian industry didn't have the capacity to produce bubble canopy in large amount, so they work out with what they have...
I had to look at several pictures of MC 202s, after reading your comment. It appears to be intentional on all the 202s I saw from that aspect. An air intake for the Pitot Static system would be my guess.
I find the blue soundtrack extremely appropriate, in memoriam of all those Italian airmen who lost their lives in a useless fight against far superior enemies. Blame on the politicians who threw Italy into a non winnable war.
Blame GERMANY that broke the Pact of Steel 4 months after signing dragging an unprepared Italy into WWII and zero help to Italian forces during the war except for conveniently intervening in Greece after Italy had the Greeks 90% defeated.
One of the most beautiful aircraft of WWII.
And a formidable fighter, as well.
The Italian air force did have some formidable aircraft
Particularly the Reggiane RE2005. What a war bird.
Actually even the the MC200 was very good.
Or the G.50,cr.42,cr32 managed to shoot down some more modern planes.

Well, with German help on engines in particular...yes, they did.

@@italianduded1161 Agreed.
But the G.56 was amazing...had it ever got into production.

Underrated aircraft. A true beauty.
I don’t know much about WW2 planes , but WOW, what a beautiful aircraft .
This is the most underrated aircraft of the whole conflict, and the most beautiful as well! Nice vid.
The most beautiful and very elegant fighter in WW2
Italy had some fantastic aircraft firms, beautiful aircraft, with the C.205, Re.2005 and G.55 it would have been interesting to see how they might have developed later on in the war as in 1943 they were all on par or better than any other nations fighters
Beautiful plane. Italian design, like Maserati and Lamborghini.
And Ferrari, Pagani, Bugatti, Lancia and more.
Da notare l'omino sulla semiala...aveva il compito di indirizzare il pilota durante il rullaggio per il cockpit posto troppo arretrato sulla carlinga!
One of the better looking aircraft of WW2 easily . Regia Aeronautical camouflage paint were the coolest looking too.
It's astounding to see such good quality film of these rare aircraft. Thank you for sharing it. I've never before seen movie footage of the Macchi 202 in action.
underrated plane of WWII, less people talk about them
A new 1/32 Italeri Folgore is released this year😍
Ghe bello vedere il nostro Macchi 202 e i nostri piloti in azione.
Viva l'Italia! 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Amazing film. Just fascinating. I think fighter pilots are same everywhere irrespective of nationality. Full of life and bravado. Lovely aircraft.
Thank you Clive - agree about that for sure
Spettacolare!! Da lacrime agli occhi…

Grazie come sempre caro Pier

Si... infatti abbiamo perso
The MC 200 airframe accepted the DB 601 engine very well to create this iconic Italian fighter that was as fast as the Bf 109F.
A fascinating piece of video from another life. Rare footage of a beautiful airplane.
Very attractive aircraft . Great camouflage design. Going by the terrain the aircraft must have been very durable and reliable.
Orgoglio italiano. Peccato troppo pochi. Onore ai nostri piloti.
Perfetto! Questo aereo e bello!
Spettacolare!! Da lacrime agli occhi!
the italian Spitfire. But with an armament similar to the Sopwith Camel.
Not his bigger Brother the 205 ...

Glad you enjoyed them Mark - have lots of old footage; the majority still need to be uploaded. With time...
Don’t know how I missed this footage but glad I found it. Really good clips on a beautiful aircraft. Thanks for sharing. Bob
Thank you as always Bob! Love the 202 myself too

Nicely designed but under armed. Finally got a couple 20 mm late in war

Bela aeronave.
Fantastico, bellisima, deadly!
Italian axis aircraft with german designed En 4:19 gine - DB 605 - made in Italy by license...
And the Germans used Italian designs and engineering in their planes...you forgot that part.
Gloria all’Italia! 🇮🇹
Un très bel avion
2:01 there seems to be a bullet hole in the wing root
