In the first of two interviews deliberately designed to answer the twin question ‘As the Manipur crisis reaches the 75 day landmark, what sort of conditions face ordinary Kuki and Meitei people in Manipur and, therefore, what is their life like and what steps do they want taken to tackle the crisis?’, a Kuki scholar, social activist and former Congress candidate has said the conditions are “grim and hopeless”. Dr. Lamtinthang Haokip travelled ten hours by car to Guwahati from the Sadar Hills of the Kangpokpi district of Manipur where he lives in order to do the interview because there is no internet in Manipur. Next week we hope to present a similar interview giving the Meitei answer to the same two critical questions.

Hallo Karan,
I am living in allahabad since 15 yrs. I am a job holding in private sector. Since my three brothers buildings of Khongsai Veng, Imphal been burnt down by meitei leepuns and tengols, they went to settle at our father's village.
More than 1300 kuki people from other villages namely Kamenlok ares rushed to my father's village, which is of Kangpokpi Dist. under Saikul -sub division. More than 500 People got sick with fever, cold, loose motion, mal-Nutrition. So since my two sisters who are working as a doctor in guwahati and Diphu hospital, I took medicine donated by some friends from different organisations and private and went to distribute. Today only I am back. People from Nagaland, Assam andizoram are only or source of living right now. We do not get any thing from Imphal, we don't expect anything from Biren and his goons too.
Kuki people are peace loving community, but if any body or group attacking us then we defend ourselves, our land etc. Our birth duty.

I'm from Naga hill district and there's a small meitei church that is directly connected with our church. When the clash broke out in Imphal areas, we're informed by the meitei pastor that their own meitei militants came and threatened them. They were desperately seeking for help.

I have been in touch with meitei Christians since 3rd May .They are so frighten to speak up about the persecution they face from Arambai tengol and meitei mob.70 meitei Churches burned down ,they are threatened and many of their Church leaders fled Manipur for safety.

Kukis are nomadic and migrating community, they don’t have any such sense of belongingness to the place they live, they have conflict with many communities in several states in the North East. Historically, they are known for attacking other communities, and the British were also fed up with this nature of the Kukis.

I'm emphasizing here again that -- If *Pondicherry* (20sqkm) which is *1116 times smaller than Manipur* (22, 327sqkm) can become UT and *Goa* (3702sqkm) which is *6 times smaller* than Manipur can become a state. Then, it's very much possible for Kuki to be given a State or UT than live with the Meitei who can looth 5000+ guns from Armoury in the valley, burned down all kuki houses and churches in Imphal, Meitei Leaders Openly threatening to Wipe out the whole kuki community, Create Propaganda song to openly kill the kuki community, and the State Government do nothing about it!.. When the State Govt. cannot protect them, it's the duty of the Centre and the Constitutional rights of the Kuki-Zo to be able to govern themselves within the Constitution of India. 🇮🇳

Mizoram and the Mizos, who are the blood--brothers of the Hill peoples in Manipur, will stand with our brethen till the end, no matter the cost...We will even have a greater land comprising of Kukis, all the zo tribes in Mizoram, Manipur, even in Myanmar and Bangladesh. Territory has a barrier ( which was imposed by the British dividing us geographycically...) but BLOOD has no barriers...
