How I compose Messiaen, Boulez, 12 tone atonal music at the piano.
In the video above I look at how I write 20th century classical atonal music at the piano. Although this video touches on the basics it does point out the essential compositional elements and emotional make up needed for successful atonal compositions. Regardless of the atonal style which could be, 12 tone serial music, Messiaen modes or Boulez atonality, for the composer/writer the building blocks and perception remain the same

Fred Phipps: Thanks, really appreciated! ....Sorry, I had to reply to your comment here as CZcams wouldn't post it in the comment section for some reason.👍
I was searching for "atonal piano music" hoping to find anything about atonal composition and I'm so very glad I came across your video! As a composer I'm always trying to find some new ideas to incomporate in my playing and composing style and it's very nice to see people doing that too! Everything you've said makes so much sense and come from some place. At most times I get the feeling that atonal music is sort of random, and I do believe there's a place for it, but I'm really now insterested in making my process more racional, so it can eventually become more automatic. Anyway, all I wanna say is thank you! Your video is really really inspiring and helped me believe I'm in my way to find my music. Yours is truly beautiful! Great insights and ideas! I'll definetely be coming back to your channel! Thanks again!
Thank you, very much appreciated!
This video feels like a rare gem on youtube. You have some wonderful ideas!
Thanks Stefaan!
Wow, maestro. I didn’t realise you were also proficient on the piano. Respect.

Thanks Mattias!👍
Brilliant and inspiring! I've been really expanding my horizons lately, exploring jazz and atonal harmony and this video is one of the best I've seen yet around these topics. Can't wait to play with these ideas after work!
Thanks Jacob!

Make more of these ideas. I got a lot out of it.
Thanks Dave! Glad this video was of some use! Hopefully, I will make some more soon👍
So many good ideas here... For composition in general, not solely atonal. That said, your atonal music is really lovely and inspiring

Dude you look so much more relaxed lol.
Hi Fun Times, Yeah lol, But, it's much easier at the piano because I don't have to worry about tuning, sound quality and lighting etc, it's just record and go with 1 cut editing.
hello there
Hello Daniel. "Echoes" sounds like a cool album 👍
What do you think about Allen Fortes PC-Set Theory? I used it in my piano composition.
Hi Roland, I have just heard your piano composition, it's excellent. Set theory is interesting, I am reading an analysis at the moment of Milton Babbitt's works. I also like Hauer's Tropes.
Im really curious how can we add vocal to that? Like atonal piano and vocal
One way you could do it is to have a structured atonal piano motif and then the vocal sings that motif but "Inverts" the intervals. Whilst this is happening the piano then copies that inverted motif but uses diminution [cuts the time/rhythm in half] the vocal then sings the original piano motif but uses augmentation [sings the notes longer] and so forth. This would be a bit like a Boulez structure in that it is taking the relationship of opposites and interacting with them. You could then build variations of this into a structured composition. You would need to notate in this way and work at the timing but with a bit of effort you can create a developmental piece of atonal music. Also, as a structure of interweaving opposites you could then re orchestrate it for strings or small orchestra or ensemble if you wanted. There are a lot of different ways of going about this, but for vocal and piano the relationship of opposites will create a wealth of material due to the many variations that will appear.,
@@CliffordMartinOnline thats interesting.I will try it out
