We drive the new 2021 Genesis GV80 luxury SUV and see how this crossover compares.
It’s finally here - the first Genesis SUV. The 2021 GV80 will compete with the BMW X5, Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLE and the Lexus RX. But does the GV80 have what it takes? Genesis say they want 10 percent market share, so will the new GV80 be the car to get them there? With an impressive set of new engines, a comfort-biased ride and a plush interior, there may be something to it.
Today on Chasing Cars, Tom Baker takes a detailed look at the 2021 Genesis GV80 in 3.0-litre turbo diesel inline six form with the Luxury Package.

@@SB-vh7jn Jaguar is notorious for its unreliability and it would depreciate at the same rate if not faster than Genesis. Quite interesting you would put your money there rather then a car with better features, materials and quality.

And soft-closed doors on the Prestige package. I'm a sucker for that. Lol...and double laminated windows all-around. Those 2 are pretty big small touches. Oh and the optional Matte finishes. gloss british green, matte grey or matte white for me! :)
I would take a comfort SUV tourer than sport set up, the inside and out presentation is great! This is a perfect fam lux suv and price is reasonable in my opinion. Keep it up genesis/Hyundai!

Looks great, speed v comfort give me comfort every time. Visited Macquarie park showroom this week and yes they look great.
I have not fallen in love with a interior in a long long time and I mean decades. I was Impressed with the New Lincoln interiors but then came Palisade, G80 and GV80. and I think the Steering wheel design is Bloody Good. Everyone else is cookie cutter to me. Love the new Green colors I think it’s the New Red that has been popular for 15 years. Not to mention most drivers are not carving corners with thier family or luxury choices. Great Review The Best on CZcams and the perfect information without going long and forever

I just went to a Genesis boutique in Canada (they don't have dealers) because I thought they received the GV80 and new G80. They didn't but they had the "pre-refresh/old" G70. Man what a good car that is! Curvaceous, sporty, elegant, incredible driving position, nice interior (even if it shares parts with Hyundai). And it's not even part the new crop of Genesis vehicles so I can only imagine how awesome this GV80 is! But if there's one car that will really put them on the map, it's definitely the new GV70

Australians really are badge snobs, we don't mind paying a premium for overpriced Euro cars. It's been said that BMW once stated that Australians are willing to pay high prices for their products so they charge accordingly. As an example look at the price of the new Porsche in Europe and compare it to here, almost twice the price. I would have no problem being seen in the Genesis, it will be interesting to see how sales go.
It'll prob do much better than previously, but obviously much less than European counterparts regardless of how awesome they do. It's all a matter of decades of building the brand. It's new so should gain cache and "premium" image if it continues in the direction it's going by 2030-2040. But good start regardless.

Not 100% true if you don’t consider the luxury car tax. And yes Porsche and Ferrari etc are exceptions. I’m from the UK and spec for spec Australians get options thrown in as standard as cars aren’t really built to order - in the UK it’s a boggo car you have to option up - just spec up a LfL car on the UK manufacturer website...eg a golf R matched for spec would cost >£40k. Where the UK makes gains is on finance where 0% is common...in Australia we get ripped
You think that's bad, Philippines is charging double or triple of the price than the US version not just genesis brand it's all the brand name... for example a challenger is about 4mil-8mil (depends on the trim model 8mil is the hellcat model) convert that to USD is range to $86k to $173k which is too damn high... in the US is actually $27k to $80k
@@JUNOMAN We are getting it here too, I spoke to a car dealer in Canberra where I am and she told me that they are selling second hand cars for more than new models because of such short supply, it's incredible. Houses are going up as well, I don't know where this will all end because prices can't just keep going up.
Great review. Polarising front-end but I can see that this will be quite popular considering the base entry 4cl X5 is less inspiring.

Love the design & inclusions - I think that’s really what makes it a value proposition. It’s not inexpensive that’s for sure. I hope it’s successful if only to demonstrate what’s achievable at the price point.
Tom - the included package, servicing/roadside/concierge didn’t get a mention (unless I missed it). Is this applicable in Australia? Cos that is one thing that makes it a great option in this arena.

My sister bought a BMW X5 a few years back, hopped into it the other day the amount of creaks and rattles were everywhere,but I guess people looking at you in a German badge won’t know that. Great filming Tom.
To answer your question, I think it has been well planned for Australia and has the right balance of model choice, engines and pricing. I'd have to see it in the flesh but I would consider paying the six-figure price if it's as your report describes. Great report BTW. Relaxed, informative, unbiased with first-rate video production.
Another super review. Appreciate you're focused on the Aussie market but I'd love if even as a written graphic you could advise some of the stats that make sense for other markets such as fuel economy in mpg.
This diesel was about 23mpg.

Yeah they are going to be amazing. Check out Asian petrol head channel, he seems to get into them before anyone else, living in Korea probably helps though!

Thank you. I'm buying this car. The value is exceptional compared to the add on's the other brands load onto the base price. It has an identity. Pity the numberplate hangs off the front, fracturing the aesthetic. I find the legroom in the right-side drive is not always the best because these cars are designed for the left-side driver market. My Audi A4 is a case in point... the center console pushes my left knee uncomfortably inward. Test driving the Genesis GV80 3.0T in a week's time.
I absolutely love this SUV, it looks terrific and really love the way it looks. How does the diesel engine sound Tom? Does it sound a bit truck like our a bit more meaty? If I had the money I'd certainly buy one.
Thanks, James. Outside the car you can hear diesel clatter but inside, it sounds satisfyingly bassy.
Genesis had a chance when the g80 (was called Hyundai genesis back then) started from 65k , filling the gap between a top trim mazda 6 and base bmw 3, merc c class
Once it was facelifted in 2017 and the price went up, sales slipped off a cliff
A driveway price of almost 100k for the base trim is just too much to ask , the car may be great but this segment of the market is brand oriented and is unlikely to stear away from the german branded cars
I think the only for genesis forward to win over a new segment of the market who would otherwise buy a top trim mazda cx9 or similar .
Gv80 should ve started at 75k
@Mr.Tweezy007 thats what i said the product is great but most people who can afford100k on. A car which they will usually hVe another car as well dont really care About the tech aspects of the car but they just lease a German BRAND ,brand here is very important
Plus this is an suv which means it will used to get kids to school and probably be driven by mums most of the time who usually can not care less about whats under the hood but care alot about the badge
Market has changed ,most people in this upper end of the market lease their cars which means reliability becomes less important as most cars are ok while under warranty
This will be a great great second hand bargain
@@gregsullivan7408 but when you get the bills to repair the Q7 when it’s out of warranty and the bills for the GV80 you will see the difference, it’s a big one.

What about steering wheel vibration? I heard there is a bit of vibration feedback from the diesel engine variant.

Genesis Gv80 2.5 Gasoline Turbo. I am Korean. The option is Popular Package 20" Wheel Signature Design Selection 1 built-in camera.
I wish I could tick option of front grille mesh body color matched....it would turn front styling much more elegant and visually compact...Or at least package where all chrome is replaced with mat/satin silver.
I am quite taken with the GV80, but as I will never require the 3rd row of seats, I am wondering if it comes without that extra row ?
Still waiting on Genesis to be available here... they'd be a huge success with the quality they offer at the proces they sell
Genesis has just released pictures of gv70 and I think it looks much better than the gv80.

Not sure it’s for me. The reverse sweep tach would drive me nuts and I doubt very much if the s/h market will like them in 4 or 5 years time

At some stage. I did drive the 3.5TT extensively on launch - lusty engine, but not that much faster than the diesel and quite a bit thirstier.
I got the g80 sedan. I had bm 5 e class Chrysler 300 lux and Lexus RX all of them top of the range .
I have done 80000 km and is amazing. Reliability has been better then all the cars I had ( maybe only the Lexus has been as reliable).
The cost of running it is way way way cheaper than the European I had, thousands cheaper over 3-5 years even outside warranty although the warranty and free service is much better than the euro ones.
The only thing that is bad about it is brand snobbery

Why don't you show the luggage space when third row is in use? What's the point of buying a 5anchor point 3row SUV and have no luggage space at all if two baby seats installed on the third row?
Great car, but here in Texas right now the dealerships are trying to sell the GV80 between $5k-$10k over msrp, which is a huge turn off! They need to come down to earth.

I'm so impressed with this one inside and out! Can't wait for a slightly hot G70 sedan! Will your loaner be the inline 6 diesel, Tom? Looks like a really interesting motor.
They should have a RWD 6 Cylinder model as most drivers don't or won't ever need AWD. Less weight and less fuel usage and less to wear out including expensive tyres!

Wow! It’s amazing how tough the Australian luxury vehicle market. If the GV80 makes it then that’s really a “feather in their cap.” Here in the USA the GV80 is selling like hot cakes. Dealerships are charging $15K over MSRP.
Wouldn''t pay 6 figures though. Heard that Genesis dont neg on price.

And a better perceived build quality in the interior, with plush materials compared the Mercedes GLE that suffers from creaking and questionable trim decisions (like all modern Mercedes), this car's interior is a winner!
Spot on. Same goes for some new-gen Audi cabins sadly. I noticed 1 or 2 ‘pops’ from trim settling in the GV80 - but these cars were being abused down very washed out and pockmarked dirt roads. I would point out BMW build quality is also really good at the moment.

Should I get this GV80 or the history, prestige, awards and performance of a Porsche Cayenne?
Ultimately that depends on what you like. Genesis appear to be aiming to be modern luxury brand with decent performance but nothing revolutionary. Porsche on the other hand while still luxurious, are also well known for performance and do a wonderful job with every car. The way I see it, Genesis and Porsche are on opposite ends of the high-end vehicle spectrum.

@@chasingcars thank you so much. I will be in the market end of 21 and I'm a Lexus guy but wow on these new Genesis models. Really leaning towards G80 over Lexus ES350. But will be hard to leave Lexus. G80 is 65k in US and I think that is a little high without wireless apple car play. But I do love the car. Thanks again.

The reason the other car manufacturers don't load it up is due to the luxury tax, keep the price down and then add the extras, no luxury tax on extras. Smart move. $10,000 in extras save over $3000 in luxury car tax plus stamp duty on the luxury tax. Makes sense to me.
As far as I can tell, in Australia at least, you will pay LCT on optioned extras
Looks like it it is fabulously equipped, but I saw one on the road & boy, it is something only a mother could love!
The looks won't be for everybody, but for me, it works.

They'll need to use it somewhere like that to get their money's worth.
No matter how luxurious the car is ,climbing into the third row seats is always a bad manoeuvre in every way, get rid of it, create a limo like second row.it will be nearly perfect.
Families like a third row, of course.
Lexus needs to watch out cause they are abit outdated now and Genesis is coming to kill
It's a bit white bread in the looks department and it sounds like the transmission is quite smooth but lacking in performance when you compare it to the euro bahn busters. The pricing better be sharp if you're going to attract badge snobs.
I feel like Genesis purposely left out performance because for a luxury brand, comfort and amenities should be their main priorities. Perhaps down the road we will see a Sport model but I imagine Genesis isn't too worried about that right now.

@@JUNOMAN Not Skoda, they have full use of the VAG parts bin but look at all tech failures recieved under warranty claims through VAG. They then lag with the most up to date tech but the cars are bullet proof. This is why they lead in owner satisfaction. However they no longer do Diesels so here I am looking at my last Vehicle

Kia stinger was a good product...was over priced n failed ( precisely tye reason dispite liking it, didnt by . Killer was the fact it had no resale value ) ...Being a parent company hyundai should have learned a lesson it didnt !!

I guess that means the Guaranteed Future Value programme that applies to this car is a good idea
