- The continuing evolution of tuning an RC drift car.
One thing I have been curious about is speed between the corners. This is one of the locations I really seem to be pulled hard when drifting with others.
I started to notice that I was running a higher amount of toe-out than a lot of folks. In my simple mind, that would seem to cause more drag compared to a setup with a neutral toe setting.
To add to that, I see more people running a higher camber amount. This reminds me of running pinewood derby cars, where you really want a small amount of contact to reduce rolling resistance. Does this work with RC drift also?
With these in mind, I decided to do some testing.
Is this really conclusive? Probably not. Seems to make sense to me when I was driving it, but I really don't have any hard data to say one way or the other. I am going to try it this way for now and see how I like it over time.

Its a fandangled thing, trying to figure it out. Specially when we first start learning. lol But slowly it is getting dialed in. Amazing, how such small amounts of adjustment make big changes in driving.. :)

A little bit of toe out and - camber work like a champ.
The goal here was to minimize straight-line drag - how to let the car get from corner to corner faster. I think it worked!

Great question!
As with many things- there are multiple things that influence this.
Biggest impact is the driving line and throttle application. Of course, it is hard to speak to that here.
I would suggest looking at your Ackerman. Is it very open, or more parallel? More parallel will scrib less speed during cornering. This may help you.
@@RoadsideRC - My rdx currently has close to parallel ackerman angle. 9-10 degrees of camber in the front and very little toe out. I changed the toe links to turnbuckles to have the toe adjustment.
- For my rear i have 3-4 degrees of camber with neutral toe. I changed the factory links to turnbuckles as well to have camber tunability.
Is there anything else i can help with my RDX? I have a competition in 3 days and im hoping to at least make the most of it since its my first comp. DS racing finnix lf4 is what we use. Any help is apprectiated, Thanks again!
@Guitarist_in_progress Honestly - suggesting alignment changes like this online - without seeing the car in person...is going to get you in lore trouble than help. I 100%, honestly suggest you don't take blind alignment settings from folks online. There is A LOT of bad suggestions out there.
You will need to try things and see how it matches your surface, car, tire, and driving style.
If you have a comp this weekend, then my suggestion is DONT CHANGE ANYTHING. It is much more important for you to be comfortable with how the car drives than change a lot of things and not be familiar with it.

Good point - no! This is a RWD chassis, and for some reason, the recommendations are all different for RWD vs AWD. My rear diff is a ball-diff, and is very open.

Roadside im essentially doing exactly what you did only a year after. i was into crawlers and bashers for a few years now and explored almost everything performance and brand wise, and find myself onto drift cars searching for the perfect set up. im curious at nearly a year later, if you have new camber and toe settings ? wouldnt mind updated numbers to try from someone who loves to tinker with effects !

I believe this car stayed roughly in this spot.
I ended up focusing:
- toe-out minimized to maximize straight-line speed
- higher amounts of camber to reduce contact patch when straight - to maximize straight-line speed
- higher amounts of caster - which then adds camber as the wheels turn so that I could get the leading wheel flat to the ground at my desired drift angle.
I got this car to this point, and left it!

I have not done anything with KPI yet. Still just as it sits from the factory.
As part of this experiment, I did increase caster. Seems it helps bring the leading tire back to zero camber at the proper drift angle.
To change this, I moved the upper control arm spacers to the front, which moves the control arm towards the rear.

What’s an ideal amount of front and rear camber for polished painted concrete?
There is no one right answer for this question.
For the rear, it is really simple. You want as much contact patch as possible. Adjust the rear camber until you get the most amount of tire touching.
For the front - the camber while driving straight basically doesn't matter. You want the leading tire to be flat in the drift angle.
Nice testing, what was your final setup?
So far, I stuck with around 8* of camber, caster is around 10*, and almost zero toe.
Seems crazy, but worked last night at the drift track...
how big of a gap in mm was the toe tie rods. and also, my d5mr i am building is sticking to 1 side when i steer and when i go to let of the steering it jolts about 2 inches and it's really frustrating me what can i do? thanks
Sorry, but I don't have this car to measure from anymore.
On your D5, go back and very carefully check dimensions versus the manual. Something is off. I have not had this issue with any of my D5 cars.
Or, double-check your endpoint settings.
I've owned my rmx for nearly a year and just now starting to tune it up. We're putting epoxy on the basement floor soon so I can work on it a little more. You running a 10.5t?
Awesome! Would be great to have a basement to do it in! In TN, basements are rare.
Running a 13.5T, but seems most in my area run 10.5T

Have been playing around with gearing.
Seems like a lower speed gearing means it is MUCH easier to control, but doesn't give the necessary wheel speed for some situations.
Higher speed gearing is the opposite, and I found it harder to control.
What issue are you having?

Yes - that is typically part of it.

I can't see the difference though in this video all driving looked the same, very weird u give those huge camber values, you make the tire almost touch the ground this way, I still cant understand how this can improve ur driving...Do you find that suspension hardness and settings matter? Have you tried to tune an AWD?
It is really hard to show in the video - that is 100% true.
The goal with the high camber while straight is to reduce rolling resistance. You then notice the high caster so the tire flattens while in drift. I was chasing SPEED!
Suspension stiffness is VERY important for weight transfer. Very!! You want it about as soft as possible.
The AWD cars I have had are much more for just hooning around in a parking lot / skatepark. Basically bashers. With that, I tuned on one of them a little, but never really worried about it.
@@RoadsideRC So you are going for a flat touching wheel on the side that takes the weight of the turn when sliding. i understand, so on an AWD this wouldn't be the issue since steering is almost straight or to the turning side...
So you have a stiff suspension so the car doesn't move around or the opposite?
Very soft suspension to allow for weight transfer.
The leading tire should be flat in drift.
Very little toe out? Maybe it was the camera but that looked like a TON

I just got a rmx 2.0s how do I get rid of under steer? The front end pushes
This is a common issue as folks learn to drift.
You need more wheel speed. The front of the drift cars have no traction, just like the rears.
If you use more throttle, and spin the rear wheels more, you will find it will turn much better.

My tires are wore slap out im running on concrete an asphalt.. how do much do I adjust my camber ? It’s adjusted factory rn tires wearing more on inside
The tires will wear fast on those surfaces.
You adjust your rear camber to maximize the contact patch. That will be a little different depending on the tire profile you run.

@@RoadsideRC the most basic setup for drifting i know this one is good i want in more detailed like toe etc and like weight transfer when doing a drift like the r hybrid guys i know it little to much ask for :(
Thise folks are going in a completely different direction. They add Wright and everything to make it as scale as possible. That does not 100% translate into being the best performance.

To achieve 0-degree toe, you can use both the same length/setting on the rear suspension mounts. E.g., -0.5/-0.5, +2/+2, etc.

This is the MST RMX2.0S.
You can get it in both RTR and kit versions.
The RTR is the best deal in RC RWD Drift, period - but it will not come with the adjustable turnbuckles. Of course, you can upgrade to those later.

touring? or drifting? if you focus on drift. try to slow smooth drift. not too fast like racing
Part of drifting is also keeping up with the other cars. It is no fun to be the slowest car on the circuit!
anyone can drift with a gyro.try without, to see if u any good?
We frequently turn down the gyro to test. If you can solid drift a RWD drift car without a gyro, I would love to see the video!
