Apple does this to maintain its high resale value for the phones. Less phones means less dilution in the second hand market, which increases the perceived value of the devices. This has no benefits other than people being forced to buy brand new phones which is worse for the environment. For a company that seems to care deeply about the planet, this is quite a low move

Apple doing this is probably the most consistent with their true values I can possibly imagine. They're all for "sustainability" but that also means sustainability of their products value and overall profits. If there's too many used iPhones going for cheap that would really mess up their sustainability.
That doesn't even make sense. According to data from Counterpoint around 49% of all refurbished phones sold are iPhones, if that isn't effecting the value or Apple's profits, do you honestly think that shredding 250,000 phones per year would have any impact? 🤔
@@Skullet ...Brother, this is ONE subcontractor and the numbers are probably understated.
Refurbished Iphones are insanely expensive and shredding hardware to reduce supply is one of the reasons it is that way.
Also Apple having the most refurbished sales is due to them only selling high end to very high end hardware. I don't resell my 150€ junker because it's borderline obsolete the day I buy it. It has nothing to do with them having a better second hand market or anything, it's literally only because it's expensive garbage.
@@Alarios711 The majority of used iPhones aren't sent back to Apple they're sold to third party companies, who refurbish and sell them. So regardless of how many iPhones Apple shreds it's drop in the ocean compared to the 3rd party market which Apple has no control over.
The reasons for Apple having such a high percentage of all refurbished phone sales is largely irrelevant to my point, but I do agree with what you're saying regarding the higher resale value. None of that is effected by Apple shredding phones though, considering the phones being shredded are likely discontinued or unsupported models with low to no resale value.

Amazon engages in a similar practice when handling customer returns. Virtually all of the goods that aren't sold as open box get destroyed despite still being functional.

So nice to see that big companies like Amazon not only denies to pay their workers a fair wage for _real_ goods, but also that they don't pay workers a fair wage that do AI stuff (which is of course perfectly fair and understandable to do since they do not produce anything that is _real_ so why should they payed so, right?)
Not surprised by apple shredding phones. Its always about money. Remember they removed chargers claiming it benefits the environment then proceeded to change the charging cable (C to C) in box so we had to buy new chargers.

Plus the chargers they used to give were trash 5W chargers so you had to upgrade anyways

Remember when Samsung also removed chargers and earbuds while claiming it benefited the environment? The amount of e-waste generated by Apple is utterly insignificant compared to the amount generated by Samsung - 33,261 metric tons vs 1,413,365 metric tons. With that said do you honestly think Apple are the only company that cares more about profit than the environment?

US chip price difference can be subsidize/offset by lower transportation cost and time advantage.
I like your optimism, but 20% to 30% of an increase to the TSMC customer, is gonna need a lot of offsetting for when end product is on the shelves. Maybe things like the CHiPS Act takes it into account when they were providing massive incentives, but I'd be skeptical.

Sysadmin here. When a workstation is decommissioned, the HDDs/SSDs tend to be reused as they don't store sensitive data. When a server is decommissioned, its HDDs/SSDs do contain sensitive data, so they get destroyed. Depending on how sensitive the data is and how much money one throws at the problem, the process can range from just shattering the platters/chips with a pillar drill or hole punch and a hammer, to degaussing and using an industrial crusher or incineration. The reason I bring this up is because the servers then get recycled or repurposed with new drives, they are not destroyed because why should they? Datacenters may also go as far as wiping/destroying the RAM, but usually, that's not necessary and wasteful.
Now, even if Apple was truly hellbent on keeping customer data safe, destroying an entire device is dumb. We don't do it with servers, so there's no need to do it with customer devices. Typically, putting a device through at least 3 various wipe cycles has a very good chance of getting rid of the data without physical destruction, 7 or more if you want to be certain.

My 2010 F150 did the same thing. Peddle would stick on full throttle. I would have to use the breaks with my left foot and reach under the peddle with my right foot to pull it up.

The iPhone 13 Mini was discontinued because hardly anyone bought it, it only accounted for around 3% of iPhone sales so it likely didn't make financial sense to take up production capacity that could have been used to make iPhones that people did want to buy. With that said, because hardly anyone bought it there isn't going to be a lot of them to refurbish or demand for them, so it makes more sense to refurbish and sell more popular models.

Its closer to 12% when it comes to just the iPhone 13 range, that 3% came from store with sales of all iPhones sold during that years which included the 12 series and such
Apple had a stockpile of 13 mini but they chose to neither self as refurbished or sell them till stock ran out, they just nuked the thing and tossed the lot into recycling like twats

The Cyber truck should have been recalled earlier given it's completely bonkers and unsafe fly by wire steering, not having the steering wheel attached to the actual steering components that turn the car is just dumb. There's already been failures with that system which to me was enough to warrant a recall. The whole thing is defective and Tesla should be required to refund everyone
Fly by wire can be very safe. Even significantly safer than direct drive. But I don't know how good their specific implementation is.
Do you fly in airplanes? They've been fly by wire for years. Do you ride in trains? Do you trust the many vehicles on the road today with rear wheel steering?
At least when the power steering stops working on my 08' accord o can still drive it, if fly by wire steering goes out it's game over for you. It's already failed for a few people
Fly by wire steering and fly by wire throttle are 2 different things, sure the cybertruck has both but they have both failed on various Cybertrucks so really how safe is it? Heck even Lexus has a model with the same fly by wire steering and that works fine until now, I don't have to trust it though am I never will

@@ThunderingRoar I understand that I just want to see a manufactured in the USA, so I know if I am paying more it is because it actually was manufactured in the US not because a retailer can charge more. TSMC though will be charging their partners more for the manufacturing of the chips and of course they will be passing that cost on to the consumer.
