It's not designed as a family car. It's a city car, a young person's first car, an excellent 'L' learner's car, or an elder's downsizing car for bingo and the pokies.

So much wrong in this review. How did Kia agree for their micro car to be featured in a family car review series? Why does the reviewer think that small = unsafe? As others have said, in days not too long ago many of us put up with much worse as our 'family cars' and in other parts of the world this is actually a great family car.

I appreciate you were open that your opinion was subjective, but it is a theme in this series when you drive smaller, compact cars - they aren’t for you and your family (fair enough). But I’d suggest these types of cars should be tested by someone else at Carsguide who doesn’t have such a fundamental objection - the conclusions would have more value.

I have the original 2017 version picanto and it’s amazing! It’s just me so I don’t need a lot of space. I can stow my phone away and safely send instructions to Siri via voice commands. The reverse camera is amazing. The warranty is HUGE and servicing is cheap. I LOVE this car. It’s not fancy, but Apple car play standard is just astounding. First Kia I’ve bought and I always recommend them. My parents now both own Kias, a picanto and sorento. Value for money +++

"I don't feel safe with my kids in the back" says Nedahl. This is why there are so many lumbering, gas guzzling Range Rovers and Land Bruisers being used to tote the kids about.
Shamefully inefficient and environmentally reprehensible. In many asian countries, a Corolla is a big family car (and not just for economic reasons). Don't get me started on the scourge of the diesel dual cab ute being used as predominantly town cars. Other than my first comment, I enjoyed the review. Thanks.

A family car can be any car. It does not need to be a sedan, SUV, etc. Depends on each individual person.
Keep in mind that those cars we call small, such as Toyota Corolla, have grown a lot in size. Same goes for city cars.
Even crash test certification authorities do not test any cars for rear end crashes. Even if they do it, it is only for to check if there is any fuel leakage.

Things don’t add up. She said her and her husband only just fit in and her kids didn’t like the back as it was cramped. I’ve travelled in one of these and I’m 6 foot 3 and sat comfortably in the back behind a 6 foot 1 driver. Then she said she has a pram for her kids. If they are so tall why does she need a pram for them? And who puts a 5 and 7 year old in a pram anyway???

I'm not sure which state you are in but in NSW, as far as I can remember, your phone has to be in a cradle or away ie not loose within the vehicle like you've advertised doing. So perhaps instead of worrying about family safety maybe look at driver safety to prevent those accidents.

Yeh when comparing to other options I'd probably consider something else for a 'family' car, especially when you can get something like a used I30 or Corolla for the same price. I don't have kids but I can only imagine the feeling of 'what if' that would always linger in the back of your mind - rear endings do happen, it's happened to me twice by distracted drivers & it's been by chance that my small old cars at the time had strong structural mounted towbars! I used to work with these little things at the shipping yard & can tell you they're actually a decent car for the money as a new proposition, when you consider the ridiculously confident warranty & low running costs.

This is where Hyundai should use the original GETZ as a template (the exact dimensions and shape) and rebuild it with all the safety tech & extra airbags to get an 5starANCAP rating. If you're a vigilant driver, you'll see GETZ's every time you go out (posh suburbs included). We should know. We've driven an '03 2 door GETZ all over Australia & in those years, total costs being two light globes, one set of 'recommended' 185 tyres & annual service. Ideal as a town & shopping car, my young teen g'kids fit back fine & boot is ideal! Our primary car is larger, and whilst we can afford 'Euro' badges, experience had us opt for another Hyundai. ps. we still punt the GETZ around Melbourne. The Picanto looks slightly more vulnerable than the GETZ & I'm not sure why. Maybe width or perhaps they've no access to the perfect light car mould that was (& still is) the Getz.

Nadahl. I'd really appreciate if you probably with the CarsGuide Reviewing Crew could do a Light/Micro car comparison between (as you say) the main competitors such as the 'Kia Picanto, Suzuki ignis, Fiat 500', Toyota Yaris, and the Mitsubishi Mirage (& other v smalls, such as VW Polo, Honda Jazz, BMW 'Mini' & even v small SUV, the Hyundai Venue). I hold that as our cities get bigger and denser, there'll soon be a revival of this largely neglected sector. Such cars were around in past years & the trend of auto makers to annually enlarge the size of each model, sees, for instance, the small car category 'C' encroach on mid size vehicles. An addition is 'affordability'. Some of these very little cars will be eminently affordable eg. first car buyers, older 'pensioner' shoppers, & 'cashed up' inner city types, the latter category being those who want 'tiny' but can afford 'premium' too. The lesson is that of changing mini car buyer demographics where very small/micros won't always be cheap & cheerful & indeed, may be similarly sized as Mico/Light but 'Premium' too.

This lady gives me major SUV soccer mum vibes, so of course she's not going to like it lol. But at the end of the day I don't think anyone is using a Kia Picanto as a family car to begin with. I live in the inner city and have no off street parking, so I'm looking for a compact vehicle to zip around in that's easy to park and economical on fuel. I'm the target consumer for a micro car like this. To be fair on her, they shouldn't have given her this car as part of a "family guide".

have to put my foot under the pedal and bring it forward to turn them

Did the wheel just 'hop' at 3:31..?
Anyway, in Asia, these are used as a family car, lugging 4 to 5 teenagers and/or adults at most time...
Body structure wise, it should be okay as the passenger cabin has been designed to cocoon impacts, though one thing I also dislike about small hatchbacks and MPVs are the small distance between the rear/last row seats and the tailgate, the small bumpers on these also doesn't do any justice to take on even small impacts...
