      I read Wood's book about fresh air coops, but your coop looks different than his original one. How did you calculate width to depth to height ratio?

    You guys did an awesome job. It looks really nice. Our chickens have been more or less outside the last winters at 8700' elevation in the Rockies. Your chicks will be totally fine.
    I am no psychologist...but it always makes me put my head back when watching a nice video like this why people would dislike it...

    good grief. this is how my dad built everything. I watch him for 4 decades do the "square it there and cut it here" the chicken house, the pigeon coop, he extended the from on the house, a side porch, the garage and a car port. no matter how tall or wide, he built a square, cut it there, friends helped put it up and roofs were easy for dad. I love seeing it again. ty

    I have three suggestions, 1- When I built my coop I put vinyl flooring on the bottom, it made cleanup easier for me. 2- You need a magnetic tray for your screws. 3- You should get a rooster weather vane for the top of your coop.
    But your design is great and I can't wait to see chickens in it.

  • @WandaKay4u2c
    @WandaKay4u2c Před 5 lety +4

    We built an additional small (think large dog house sized) coop & run in addition to our larger one for broody mamas... and if a hen needed to be isolated. Something else that we did that worked WONDERFULLY was to line the floor with some leftover vinyl flooring that made it REALLY easy to clean and protected the wood floor from water damage. We incorporated LARGE windows with screening reinforced with wire cloth and had a ventilation between the roof & walls (covered with wire cloth) so that they always had good circulation. For times when it was very cold or too wet, we had roll down plastic drop sheets (duct tape & grommets to edge them) that we would pull down over a window or two. Just rolled them up and tied them when not in use. Secured them with coffee mug hooks attached to the frame when down. You're right, chickens are pretty hardy and adaptive to weather as long as they have the right shelter.

    if temps were to drop w wind than you can put plastic over a portion of the screening, easy to remove and put up for the day or week. open means less mites, diseases, respiratory problems. if they need warmth a pile of hay to nestle in works easy, sooooo proud of you both.

    Get job!
    When I was a kid our chicken coop had a slightly slanted floor. Slanted towards the back. There were some small holes drilled close to the bottom of the wall. Probably quarter size holes.
    When Dad scooped out the old hay and what not, then he would hose down the floor and used a stiff push broom to push the dirty water out the holes.
    The type of wood you used is fine. Except maybe a good sealer to prevent rotting wood. Ammonia is pretty strong stuff and could damage the floor faster than you think.
    I love the chicken coop! Reminds me of a tiny home.
    Y'all are so talented and you work together so well!

Maybe you thought of this, but that roof is large enough you might be able to put a rain barrel for water for the chickens, to keep from hauling it or needing an extra long hose. In winter that won't help much but in the non-freezing seasons, it would be great for you and the chickens. But that coop is gorgeous!

    A few years ago I built a chicken coop and learned a few things I’d like to extend to you. 1) tear out the plastic underneath the coop as this will only contain moisture and speed up the rotting process on your OSB. 2) paint your interior walls with a good water resistant paint as they will get covered in droppings and everything else especially along the bottom two feet. This is where the dropping’s will collect and retain moisture. 3)definitely paint the floor as chickens make a mess with their water and food. 4)round over the roosting bar as they need to wrap their toes around it so they don’t fall off. This is more ergonomically suited to them. 5) keep up the good work the two of you do and good luck with your flock of chickens.

    I love how you guys always do clean, neat, simple and practical designs. Love it. Think you might need to make a playhouse/treehouse for the kids though lol

    I really love the nesting boxes. I like that they arent too high up from the floor and also really great that you could potentially just keep the broody hen in the box and move her without causing her too much stress. :)
