  • Today my son is having his upsherin! Also called a chalakah, this Jewish ceremony is popular within Orthodox Jewish circles. In this ceremony, we cut his hair and he begins wearing a kippah / yarmulka and tzitzit. Due to the pandemic, it's a small affair at home, with family watching through video chats. I also sew a kippah in this video!
Hello and welcome! My name is Chana, I’m married to my best friend, and we have three wonderful children together. We also happen to be Orthodox Jews and we homeschool our kids. This video is a sneak peek into our daily lives :) You can see how this particular Jewish homeschool mom sets up her days, rolls with the punches, and gets it all done. Thanks for watching!

I really love how so many things are celebrated in your faith. Not only the celebration but the tradition and sweet intentions behind them. I just don't know if I could have waited until 3 with my boys they both had a shock of super thick, dark hair at birth. Then it went blonde and the curls came in, and it had to be cut regularly from about 5 months on. My mother used to cut it and the only problem we had was that they used to go to sleep on us, because it was so relaxing to them.

Your journey to becoming an Orthodox Jew reminds of a story my student told. Her mother was born in Russia. She knew that she was Jewish but had no real idea what that meant. As Sonia put it, she had to learn to be Jewish when she arrived in the US. Your journey has given me an idea of what that entails. Thank you.

What a wonderful video! I love the idea of the Upsherin tradition :) I remember taking my son to the barber shop when he was probably 7 or 8. While we were there, a Dad brought in his little boy with the most gorgeous long curls to get his first haircut. What a transformation when they walked out of the barber shop. Definitely the little boy to big boy thing. Couldn't help shedding a few tears:(

I learn so much on your channel! I think this is a great tradition. My mother is hair stylist, so I had her perform my daughter's first haircut. It was very emotional for me because, growing up, my mother always cut my hair. I didn't sit in a salon chair until I was well into my 20s. I think all the family participation is beautiful. Again, as always, I love how G-d touches every part of your lives, even something like a little boy's haircut. Absolutely love your channel and love your bright, joyful energy. I once took care of a beautiful child with the most beautiful, flowing, dark and thick hair of head.
He was a right terror and nobody could keep up with him and I absolutely adored him.
He would run and climb and never walk and then just come to me and stand as still as he could (which wasn’t much!! His whole body from his neck down still moved) just long enough for me to tie his hair back and out of his face and have a quick cuddle and then he was gone again.
When he came in with his haircut his mom and I shared a funny moment when we both mourned his hair that was cut.
In my career there’s only been a few kids that I’ve grown so attached to but he’s definitely up there and I was so sad when his family moved to Israel but they were so happy!

Wonderful! It reminds me of the time I was paying at a restaurant and a beautiful little "girl" was beside me. I complimented the child and his father said, "He's a boy. I have to get his hair cut." I felt like an idiot. Do you keep a souvenir of his first haircut? Several of my non-Jewish relatives did this. My husband had the same long curls and his Grandfather got it cut without telling anyone--or saving a piece. His mother actually cried and Grandfather was in the doghouse for a few days,.

I’m a Conservative Jew who just moved from Seattle to Southern California two years ago, and the Jewish community down here is really different. In Seattle, no one I knew did an upsherin for their son. Down here, a few of our friends have, and my husband wants to do one for our 5 week old son when he’s older.

Mazel Tov. This is the first I've heard of this, so now I have something to tell my Jewish friend that I learned today.

Mazal tov! I did a great job of the kipa! M&Ms cool idea It was my nephews upshirun this week too! I make Al my nephew ( I BH have many) that turn 3 a special tzitzit with their picture on it saying אני בן שלוש. It was upsetting because even though he doesn't live to far away I couldn't give it to him because we r in lock down for oven a month already.... Looks like it's going to have to wait. All for the best.

I'm not Jewish but I know how you feel about cutting your little ones hair. My boy has beautiful copper red hair and I wanted to keep it long forever! But alas it had to be done and I nearly cried.
