    Troubleshoot why your Asus Laptop turns on but the screen stays black, dark, dim, etc. This video will take you through the various causes including your RAM, CMOS Battery, LCD Cable, LCD, and ultimately the Motherboard. Perform the tests in order to find the cheapest and easiest fix first :) Check out the FAQ's and Related Video Links below !!

    FAQ's:
    Q: What if I only have one RAM slot?
    A: Then you would need to purchase another stick of good RAM to perform that test.
    You can see how to purchase RAM here; • How To Buy The Correct...
    Q: My RAM is integrated into the motherboard.
    A: If your RAM is build into the motherboard, then you wont be able to test for it separately. If its bad, then the motherboard is bad. Move on to the rest of the video. What was the result of the external monitor test?
    Q: What if after all these steps my screen is still black?
    A: If after all these tests your screen is still black and wont display to an external monitor, then you have identified the Motherboard as being the bad component. It will need to be replaced.
    Q: None of the steps worked but my computer will display to an external monitor.
    A: If the first series of tests do not identify the issue but your computer will display to an external display, then your looking at an LCD or LCD cable issue most likely. Try 'reseating' the cable first. Unplug it from the motherboard and the LCD. Then plug it in again. If that fails to correct the issue, replace the cable. If that fails to correct the issue, replace the LCD.

    Should always start with removing/disconnecting the battery, as well as the power cord, and then holding the power button down for around 20 seconds to discharge the capacitors. Then put the battery and power cord back in and see if its fixed. This has worked for me on hundreds of laptops. I call this issue "stuck in sleep mode". Should always try this first

    Of all the laptops I have bought that have died, I have become so accustomed to these videos and instructions as leading nowhere. But maybe I finally lucked out, but this nailed it. I somehow slept with my laptop in my arms, the vents blocked and it overheating (somehow it was turned on). It may have fallen onto my bed in which case I might have put 200lbs on top of it at some stage as well and woke with it under my body but too tired to put it off the bed. I don't know what has happened to it, but the RAM thing kind of worked. It was working in only one of the ports, then both ports, with different and the same RAM. It is working now and that'll do. It allowed me to back up all my work anyway. Just seeing that my SSD wasn't fried was a relief. If I had to send it off to be repaired, I wouldn't know for a month or so if all my work was destroyed as I have no other computer that can read SSD.

    I have a similar problem with my Asus laptop. The screen on restart SOMETIMES shows fine multicolored vertical stripes on a bluish background. The computer itself is working, based on the external monitor test. The thing is, the problem is intermittent. And when it happens, if I restart lots of times, the normal screen eventually comes back. Or, if I wait a little while, it restarts normally. I would think that would make the diagnosis that much more difficult. And I have to wait till it happens again to take to a repair shop.

    • @PC_Monkey
      @PC_Monkey  Před 3 lety +1

      If its fine with an external monitor, than your issue is either a loose LCD Cable, a bad LCD cable or a bad LCD.

    Bear in mind that if your Mother board is the kind with the "Integrated CPU" it still might be repairable. Whether someone in your area can do it is another story. a new board would probably still be cheaper. the CPU on thos is attached VIA Ball Grid Array(BGA) this is a grid of Solder joints on the back of the CPU and it's attached using special equipment to heat the solder joints up so the chip is attached. THIS IS NOT A DIY option, BGA repairs take special equipment to properly reflow the solder joints. there's many videos out there on "baking" your Video cards and laptop boards, DO NOT DO THIS. not only is it hazardous, toxic fumes, but it's innaccurate and 9/10 time won't work or work for a very short time.

    These videos are great, thanks so much for making them. I followed the steps for troubleshooting and was able to get the laptop working with an external monitor. Originally, the laptop stopped working completely after moving to a new apartment so probably smth happened during the move. I removed the battery, drained the static, plugged in, turned it on and saw the keyboard lights come on and the Dell logo on the screen with a loading spinner. Also saw a tiny text box show up on the top left corner that I think said it’s clearing cache. It came on for a sec before the screen went black. The laptop was still making some noise. After waiting for about 30 min with no luck, tried connecting to an external monitor and it worked. So wondering if it’s still an issue with the LCD or the LCD wire. What do you think?

    • @PC_Monkey
      @PC_Monkey  Před 3 lety

      So the Dell startup logo screen came up, then the screen went black and stayed black, you hooked up an external monitor and were able to use your computer normally that way but the laptop screen was still black?

    • @gselimyan

    I've seen the RAM issue before and I fixed the screen just by removing it and reseating it. It baffles me though why a memory issue would make the screen fail to turn on. You'd think it would at least get to the BIOS and throw up some sort of memory error. Also in older laptops a dead CMOS battery will just mean that the BIOS clock asks to be configured everytime you boot up, so why in some modern laptops do they make it so that the screen won't even come on?

    Any idea of what it could be?

    • @PC_Monkey

      Sounds like an issue with your LCD or LCD cable. Try reseating the cable from both ends first. See if that helps. If not, you would have to replace them one at a time.
