- "Face the Nation" takes a look back at the relationship between Lyndon Baines Johnson and the Kennedy family, and how then-President Johnson reached out to Jackie Kennedy and Rose Kennedy following John F. Kennedy's assassination.
When it became clear to Johnson that he could not reach the top of the ticket, he began to consider the second spot. He had his staff look up how many presidents in the previous hundred years had died in office-five out of eighteen, giving him a better than 20 percent chance of reaching the presidency that way. When Clare Boothe Luce later asked him why he would accept the nomination to be number two, he answered: “Clare, I looked it up: one out of every four Presidents has died in office. I’m a gamblin’ man, darlin’, and this is the only chance I got.” He said much the same thing to trusted journalists.

This is 100% true, as I remember seeing the same interview story from reporters on CZcams. There was a Republican senator who also said that JFK wouldn't make it to the end of his first term alive after he selected LBJ as his Vice President. RFK strongly persuaded his brother not to select LBJ, but LBJ and Hoover blackmailed JFK, so he had to choose LBJ as his running mate.

The successful objective was to lure Jackie away from the coffin for just long enough for the Secret Service detail to move the body from the bronze casket to the aluminum shipping coffin that the body arrived in at Bethesda for the 1st clandestine autopsy, and just as the orderly with the xrays in hand walked into the hallway, in comes Jackie (et al) with the Bronze casket supposedly containing JFK's body arriving 30 some minutes later. It was the only time she left her husband's side in the bronze casket, aft in AF1 to unnecessarily swear LBJ into his new, stolen office.

Turns out that Johnson “bought” his House seat back in the 30’s. Which catapulted him into the senate, which was where JFK oluckdd him from.
Johnson was the crudest, no class VP we ever had, then he carried that all that to the Presidency.
The conflict in styles between JFK and LBJ showed just how different they were.
Kennedy had to put him on the 1960 ticket to have a chance to win.
Johnson's masterful use of money to secure a seat on congress is no less "crude" than Joe Kennedys own efforts to do the same for his son. If anything, Johnson is more impressive because he came from nothing. A poor boy who clawed his way out of the hill country and into the oval office. He exemplifies the American spirit, ugliness and all. JFK is just another family legacy president.

JFK didn't elect LBJ to win the election. According to Howard Hunt and LBJ's mistress, Hoover and LBJ were very close friends and neighbors, and they blackmailed JFK to elect LBJ as VP. The Kennedy brothers had already appointed the Maryland senator as their running mate and had informed them. But before the official nomination date, JFK was invited to have a meeting with Hoover and LBJ at a hotel in DC. After the meeting, JFK changed his nomination to LBJ, and RFK became furious about his brother's sudden last-minute change. Medical issue and affair with German spy during his military years and got kicked out from military due to this was the big issue JFK got scared and nominated LBJ

Kennedy carried new england and johnson brought in texas and southern states. All political. May have also been some pressure from the dem party.

At the time he wasn't popular with the unions or liberals so there was a bit of a stink kicked up when Kennedy picked him. Even Johnson's allies didn't want him to become VP, Kennedy had to make some promises to Speaker Rayburn before he signed off on the choice.

Marcello was flown back by David Ferrie.

And secondly, LBJ wasn’t just brought onto the ticket carry the South, though that was undoubtably a merit to having LBJ on the ticket, he was also brought on due to his significant experience in Congress, this would prove to ease people’s concerns that JFK was too inexperienced in politics.

I have read that Johnson had no use for any of the Kennedy's as he considered them elites. But he well welcomed his new role, along with an overwhelmingly liberal congress, in bringing about all the liberal legislation of the 1960's.
If he hated him or not is irrelevant. It's probably common for the POTUS an VP to be an arrangement between men to obtain the office while the VP is one step away for the future...
