This young man was truly something special at this point and time. It is such a shame what margarito robbed from us. He was never quiet the same after that
140 lb. Cotto is my favorite fighter ever. Just so ferocious, and had bazookas attached to his shoulders at this weight. People call him chinny at this weight, but Torres is literally one of the hardest hitters in boxing history. 140 lb. Cotto was too big, too strong, and vicious like a tiger back then.
That will always be cottos best weight class although he beat no big name there but he was special at 140. 147 pacman and margacheato wasted him at welterweight. 154 he was average.
Never saw this fight before now. Was looking for a fight to watch and looked up the espn list of 50 best fights of the decade 2000-2010 and chose this since I hadn't seen it. HOLY SHIT!!!! Glad I made the choice I did cuz this was a slugfest!! What heart by both men. This is the kind of fight you show people who aren't into the sport.
stoplyinn No its not a video its a list that espn made a few years back. Google search "espn list 50 greatest fights of the decade" and it will give links to the list of the best fights from 2000-2010. Lots of fights you've probably seen and some more you most likely haven't.
JayJoe626 Thats a great fight, too. And I agree that it is better than the second and third Getting fights. Have you seen Ward-Neary? You really can't go wrong with a Micky Ward fight.
Cotto una de sus mejores peleas. Mis respeto para Torres honestamente puedo desir que Torres fue Uno de los mejores boxiadores contra cotto la verdad que tiene una buenisima pegada
What a beautiful style cotto had i miss him. He will always be my favorite my sons will know about him and when my kids have their own kids they will know about cotto. Hes name will live on
Torres made a big mistake in round 3 but Cotto was nice enough to bail him out. At 17:58,..they just came out of a little scuffle and cotto backs away. Torres saw he had distance so he dropped his arms down and shook them briefly. Cotto saw that, and took it as a sign that Torres was arm weary or tired. Cotto goes right after torres as he backs up to the ropes. Then cotto hits torres in the gonads. Actually, the punch was low but not that low.The referee reacted quickly calling low blow, and torres took advantage by using the full 5 minutes allowable. Torres was tired, thus shaking his arm out. He needed the rest very likely it
Cotto is a warrior plain and simple i remember recording this fight on VHS and Cotto showed a lot of heart in surviving the onslaught of Torres and breaking him down..
For fighters coming up that is why you should train hard and best thing is to run as much miles if a fight is scheduled for 8 you train for 10 and what keeps you up are your legs.
3 weeks preparation made no difference. If Torres went to the body he might've gotten the stoppage, but he threw nothing to the body at all. He threw everything to the head. Are you telling me 3 weeks isn't enough time to practice going to the body during sparring, heavy bag, & pad work? If anything, Cotto was at a disadvantage, because he was preparing for a cautious counter-puncher, & when that opponent pulled out of the fight, he was put in against a puncher.
kufujitsu that's your own personal opinion I'm not saying that cotto just won because of that I'm just saying that if Torres Would ve had more time to prepare the right way for this fight things would it been different regardless of who would it won
Actually, I think it's pretty impressive. He gave Cotto all he's got and had nothing to be ashamed of. Torres became a champ afterwards but retired early.
One of the best fights ever as far i can remembered.Like a pendulum battle, Torres had Cotto in trouble a couple of times in the fight but Cotto seemed still calm under severe pressure and managed to weather the storm time and again and dished his own powerful shots that Torres could not withstand with numerous knockdowns of his own. What a fight and this one was one for the ages.
Your right. Cotto was the better man. I watched that fight. A hell of a fight. I think Cotto was still in the building stages of his career at that time too. But your right; that body attack that he put on Torres was just too much. The fact that he went to the body like he did showed the maturity of him as a fighter. He saw the head shots wasn't cutting it; but like they say; kill the body; AND THE HEAD WILL FOLLOW!!!! Great point!!!
SÍ BRODER EL COLOMBIANO LE SALIÓ DURO POR POCO NOQUEA A COTTO LO QUE PASÓ QUÉ COTTO SÉ SUPO BATALLAR SÍ NO LO NOQUEA Y YO SOY PUERTORRIQUEÑO Y SOY FAN DE MIGUEL ÁNGEL COTTO EL MEJOR BOXIADOR DE PUERTO RICO DEL PUEBLO DE CAGUAS
This fight, and Canelo Alvarez vs Cotto's brother nearly derailed the hype and HOF careers of Cotto and Canelo. I remember watching both live thinking it may be over in real time. A liitle less so with Canelo though.
17:54 this left hook to the body changed the whole fight. watch torres pause and try to shake it off before he moved forward. it was all downhill from there for torres.
The announcers rarely understand what's going on in a fight. If you pause at 25:09, they show a replay of Torres going down. Cotto hit him with a hard left hook but it was clearly low. As Cotto backed away, Torres slowly went down on his knees. Larry Merchant said he either went down from the punch, or to draw attention from the referee regarding the low blow. Neither was true, although he needed the ref to stop Cotto from hitting low. The reason he went down was that after the low blow, as Cotto backed away, he pulled Torres head down and because Torres was tired, he went down to his knees. If Cotto hadn't pulled his head down, he wouldn't have gone down.
I recall this fight, actually Torres was a late replacement and I also remembered that he had a high ko percentage, albeit against nobodies, but a fighter that can punch is always dangerous, this fight proved just that.
If Torres had a fraction faster hand speed and/or if his beard was a fraction better he would have been a World Champion for an extended period. I know you can say this about a lot of world class contenders but the margins with Torres were slimmer than most I’ve seen. An almost great fighter and an entertaining slugger.
I remember this fight ... Torres only had 2 weeks to prepare for this fight !! Cotto should of gave Torres a rematch ! I lost respect for cotto at this time the fight took place !
Torres had fought very recently and was given 3 weeks notice to accept this fight. He accepted because he was still in shape from that fight camp and felt good about his conditioning. Torres is a power puncher but not a great boxer. He was KO'd in one round by Kendall Holt after dropping Holt twice and getting careless. A rematch would have ended with Cotto stopping him sooner.
The referee screwed up a call in the 4th round. At about 23:25, Cotto is coming forward and Torres backs up to the ropes. Cotto lands a right, then he hit Torres hard with a left hook, but it was 6 inches below the belt. That punch rattled Torres gonad's, then Cotto pulled Torres down with his gloves, so Torres fell forward onto his knees. Torres was hurt by the low blow but he didn't have time to catch his breath, so when Cotto pulled him down he was too weak to resist. That was the 3rd time and should have cost Cotto one point. Instead, he gained a point because he was credited for a knockdown that was anything but a knockdown. That was a 2 point swing, but ultimately it didn't matter due to the TKO stoppage. This shows however, that one mistake an cost 2 points and in a competitive fight, 2 points often determines who wins the fight. By the way, nearly the exact same thing happened again in the next round. Cotto landed a punch, then a pause, then Cotto pulled Torres down. The referee gave Cotto another knockdown. It's a good thing the fight didn't go to the cards. The referee had the score so screwed up, if it went to the cards nobody would really know who won the fight.
At 23:25 Torres got hit with a body shot that was very low but he didn't go down until Cotto gave him a push. The replay showed the punch raked Torres starting on the red part and landed solid near the top of the blue part of Torres shorts. It was about 5 or 6 inches low, then Cotto put a glove on his shoulder as he was bent over and gave him a little shove. Torres went down pretty easy because the punch hurt him, but it should have been a point taken from Cotto for about the 5th low blow.
Yo creí que Ricardo iba a llegar más lejos. Tenía bastante. Aposte a favor de el en esa. Creo que falto manejo para hacer historia esa noche. También por supuesto su mérito al gran Miguel.
Cotto isn't a dirty fighter per say, but I counted at least 8 low blows in the 3rd round. At least 6 of those were hard, and Cotto was known to have the best left hook to the body at the time. The referee only caught 2 of the 8, the 3rd was nearly identical to the 2nd when Torres took a breather. As Torres leaned back toward the ropes, Cotto threw a sweeping left hook and you could see Torres shorts jump when Cotto landed low,...... right in the boys. When they swung around to the other side and Cotto had him on the ropes again, by the time is was over Cotto landed 4 or 5 more low punches. I had a good look at one of them, it was about as hard as Cotto could throw a punch, and it hit on the blue stripe on Torres shorts, a good 5 inches low. Cotto wasn't being particular either, he was bombing Torres low on both sides. I give the ref a low grade for missing 6 hard low blows in a 2 minute time frame. Those shots had to take something out of Torres, and he was tired at the time making them all the more harmful. Cotto has the best recuperative powers I've seen. He was hurt in 3 or 4 fights in this part of his career, the other guy would then go after him, only to get hit with a left hook about 10 seconds after Cotto was wobbled. He was hurt more in this fight then the others, but like always, he magically sobered up in seconds. Torres must have hurt Cotto 3 more times in the 3rd round, but he recovered all 4 times to land punches before the end of the round.
Not yet. He was a little bit over a prospect. They took him serious when he beat quintana and when he got through zab Judah and Shane. That's when he was the it guy. Too bad margacheato took that away.
Miguel Cotto is my hero, man of respect, a real fighter, and no nonsense pro athlete. Great composer and serious man.
Cotto's left hooks to body are damn near lethal.
Underrated fight

This fight was compromised. by cottos low blows
Marcel Cadiz facts those low blows were purposely thrown
Cotto isn't a dirty fighter per say, but I counted at least 8 low blows in the 3rd round. At least 6 of those were hard, and Cotto was known to have the best left hook to the body at the time.
