  • The Stena HSS Explorer arriving at Dun Laoghaire port in Dublin, Ireland on the 17th of July 2014. The high-speed Stena (HSS) is the world's largest fast ferry, traveling at a speed of 46 miles per hour (74 km/h), although it is capable of doing over 70 miles per hour (110 km/h). The Stena Explorer was constructed by Finnyards in Rauma, Finland. Three HSS 1500 class vessels were ultimately completed in 1996 and 1997. The first of the class, the Stena Explorer, entered service in April 1996, serving the Holyhead - Dún Laoghaire route and is still operating during the summer months. Thank you for watching. During my years as a field engineer in maritime electronics I once had the pleasure of joining her for a trip from Hook of Holland to Harwich and was given a grand tour thru the engine room: 1 main turbine from a 747, 2 auxiliary turbines from a 737, total 100.000bhp. Very impressive! The motion while sailing could be sickening to some as she didn't just rock on the waves, but also shimmy from side to side .
Remember also replacing a lot of radar systems on this one. Her speed caused the (non braked) antennae to start rotating in the wind when not in use, effectively turning the antenna motor into a generator and blowing up the master display.
And finally of course there was the accident where she hit a large wave at top speed knocking out bow plating. She was finally retired, too expensive to run. Stena Hollandica was extended to accommodate more vehicles/passengers and took her place.

I have to say I was privileged to have worked on all 3 (HSS - High Speed Service) HSC 1500's for Stena Line. Originally based in both Belfast & Stranraer starting on Stena Voyager & then Stena Explorer / Stena Discovery when they rotated every other year on the 3 routes for their annual refits / dry dock inspections at Harland & Wolff in Belfast. All 3 of them where amazing pieces of advanced technology and mechanical astonishment due to their sheer size & power they could generate, move and still float at the same time.
I guess the now day equivalent is working as cabin crew on the Airbus A380, which are few a far between these days as a lot of airlines can't fill them, also I think that the HSS in comparison size are even larger in square footage to the A380. We definitely carried more passengers than could fit on a A380 in full economy mode. We had 1500 passengers alone, with if remember correctly up to 56 crew, from Cabin Staff, Bridge and Deck Staff. An A380 has between 16-21 cabin crew & usually 4-6 flight deck crew is a total length of 476 ft 16 inches on two decks in 4 classes (First, Club World, World Traveller Plus & World Traveller) carries 469 passengers. On HSS 1500 normally 54-56 crew (cabin, bridge & deck crew) & 344 ft 5.8" long x 223ft 1.16" width. Unfortunately all HSS 1550 & 900 craft are retired or scraped, but also are a lot of A380's. Both giants of their time, but long outlasted by the Boeing 747 (original Jumbo Jet) & 747-8i (Intercontinental) version.

Am I the only one here who can't think of these without thinking about the one on Top Gear when Jeremy Clarkson tried and failed to get on it as it was leaving Belfast in a Renault Twingo with Ross Kemp in the boot and the car ended up in the drink in Belfast Harbour? Or is it just me and my nostalgia?

Great film! I went to Inchicore railway open day in 1996 & travelled by HSS across from Holyhead the previous evening, the Irish sea was as still as a millpond, the captain made light work of the journey! Beautiful ship & much lamented.

I've sailed in a lot of notable ships in my time. Bismarck, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark & of course famously Titanic but the HSS 1500 was by far the best blue cheese whopper I've ever had.
