- Not planned but I ended up coming back on the Hoverspeed one trip. I have crossed the channel on ferry, hydrofoil (pretty much everyone on the boat puked but me) and of course the Chunnel but this trip was the most fun. Too bad it ended, it was worth the 98 quid!
From wikipedia: The Princess Anne (built 1968): built by British Hovercraft Corporation for Seaspeed and stretched in 1977. Transferred to Hoverspeed on creation of the company in 1981. Withdrawn in 2000. Currently at the Hovercraft Museum at HMS Daedalus. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoverspeed
No more hovercraft and no more Concorde …..we truly have gone backwards
we have eurostar , its something that tunnel
Riding the hovercraft wasn’t a particularly pleasant experience. It was noisy, and you couldn’t see out the windows at all.
@@davidwebb4904was faster than ferries , it was the main goal
The size of that is astonishing, I had no idea it was THAT big. Awesome!
I made that trip in the early 80’s on a hovercraft they were very cool
Thanks for sharing. I rode this as a young child and it was an amazing, futuristic adventure!
Wow I have saved this, must be the only 4k video of these wonderful craft in existence? ❤
So weird. I was well aware of these hovercraft as a kid, I remember my father telling me about going on one in the 70s. But I always assumed they'd been consigned to the history books years before.
I watched this video today, heard Everything but the Girl playing at the end, and assumed the video was fake because that song was too recent.
Didn't realise until today that they remained in service right up to 2000. I was 14 then. Wish I'd have known.
Great comment. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing this
It takes me back
Was so impressive ❤
brings back memories
Thank you for posting
Its history
WOW AMASING
Lush makes me blush
👍👍👍👍
Pena que nunca vi um desses no Brasil. 😥🇧🇷
Amazing sea craft. Capacity, scale and fuel costs killed it.
When did u record that?
Fall of 99. I think they stopped the service in 2000.
I really hope engineers are working on an evolution of this hovercraft idea.
Smallermore powerful motors, sturdier skirt or a no skirt design.
A no skirt design would make it worse That's why they added skirts to hovercraft in the first place
@@lifeofgamer2539 More R&D May lead to new technologies that enable a no skirt design.
@@Gargamoth that r&d came in form of a skirt to fix the issues of a skirtless design. I would love to see more hovercraft designs but skirtless hovercrafts are just impractical And not efficient.
That didn't look like a smooth/comfortable ride at all!
A little bumpy yes. A fun adventure yes.
From my judgement, the crossings were only smooth at sea state one. I was on one crossing from Dover to Calais that lasted 90 minutes because of the sea. Some of the passengers on that particular flight swore they'd never again board a hovercraft 😂. Furthermore, the inherent rumbling of the machinery always created a basic level of vibration, rattling etc.
But it nevertheless was an exciting form of transport!
