    Watching all these British, Asian and American makeovers, I can’t help but feel that the hairdressers take vengeance on these girls’ healthy, long, luxuriant hair. It’s like they hate them.

    • @hyperhannah5741
      @hyperhannah5741 Před 5 lety +51

      Well, hairdressers quite often knows what looks best on a person, but I do admit that it seems like a lot of hairdressers don't take into account whether or not the person may have some kind of personal reason why they grow their hair out like they do. I'm not hating on any hairdressers; they work hard at what they do and it takes a lot of skill to create these looks... It's just that when I see these girls who cry over their hair being cut so short, I kinda see myself in it.
      When I was in like Kindergarten, my mom cut my hair super short, literally a pixie cut or shorter, and on my first day, I went to the restroom at the school, but this other little girl told me, and I quote (to the best of my ability), "You can't come in here; you're a boy!" Ever since then, I've hated having short hair, and my long hair is kind of like a security thing that I have, and it also gives me a way to cope with some other things I have to deal with on a daily basis... Even now, I actually twirl this one lock of hair on the left side of my face as a way to cope with my anxiety, my ADHD (I have a constant need to move so I use it as a fidget), and it helps me ground myself when I'm dealing with sensory overload as a result of my autism and sensory issues. Aside from all that, I have loads of insecurity about the way I look, and my long curly hair is what people comment on the most, so it's one of the things about the way I look that I like the most.
      So yeah, even though the hairdressers know (most of the time) what would make someone look their best... that doesn't always coincide with what's best for the person on a mental and emotional level. If I got my hair cut like that, I'd have a terrible time trying to concentrate or with dealing with all of the overwhelming things I have to experience everyday, and I might actually have some kind of beakdown as a result because if I don't have my long hair, I lose a tried-and-true coping mechanism I have to help me get through life one overwhelming day at a time.
      Sorry if this is long; I tend to go a lot more into detail than I probably should, but I'm just trying to make sure I convey what I'm trying to say in the most accurate way I can.

Everyone just says "suck it up," but meanwhile this kind of treatment is appalling in every other industry, including similar industries like acting and music, which are currently having big movements for better treatment of artists. But for some reason the general public is perfectly fine with models being treated like absolute garbage, and even _watch it and laugh at their suffering._ Kind of f*cked up.

    Don't know why you think the girl getting her hair bleached was being overdramatic tbh. Her hair really didn't turn out that great looking imo, and even if it had, her hair was falling out. And even after her hair started falling out, they STILL tried to keep going with it. I'd be beyond pissed off if I were her. The only reason she wasn't half bald is because she said something.

      aquandarylife88 The only idiot here is you. If I were her, I'd be signing up to have a professional makeover and model the look afterward, not to have my hair damaged to the point that it was falling out. What if you went to the salon expecting to get your hair colored, and the person doing it - who is supposed to be a professional by the way- fucked up the process SO MUCH that chunks of your hair died and started falling out? You'd be a damn liar if you said you wouldn't be upset about it. And no, it doesn't grow back, at least not healthily like it should. Not only did this girl get her hair destroyed, but it happened on national television for thousands of people to see it. So if you REALLY think that people don't have the right to be upset about THEIR OWN hair being RUINED by supposed professionals, you're obviously an asshole.

Do you know if that’s specific to just one country or region or pretty much all over for east Asia? And is that a more modern thing only? I know henna and indigo have been used as hair dye to get black so I would have guessed that maybe historically people would have been ok dyeing their hair black (to cover grays or maybe even out the tone?)

      Preposterous I’m not 100% sure. A few years ago I had a friend who’s family was Korean, and she’s the one who told me that. Apparently she’d died her hair blonde and had to wear wigs whenever she was around her family because they’d legit disown her if they knew.

    • @kestiameshad
      @kestiameshad Před 6 lety +12

      I'm from Malaysia, same as the girl who had her hair dyed blonde, and I would say that while it's not exactly taboo in Malaysia since we're getting on with the times and more and more young people embrace pop cultures, it is however kinda frowned upon (but not really in a bad way, just in what-a-hassle-to-deal-with-way, you know?) because I'm not sure if you're aware but Asian hair is notoriously hard to get to that level of blonde. VERY hard. I'm not surprised to see it break off like that, because I'm sure they have a time crunch and in order to get to that level of blonde in a few hours (or okay, maybe a day, I don't watch the show, idk) they would have to bleach it with super powerful developer, and do it multiple times in A DAY. That would fry any hair for sure, regardless of ethnicity. And this kind of process is expensive to maintain since we have naturally dark roots and it'll look horrible with the regrowth in a month, anyway. Very few people can keep up the lifestyle. So if you have dyed blonde hair like that in Asia, you'll stand out for sure. But yeah, most people don't do this kind of dramatic change because it's a hassle.

    @jaimeegaynor3030 Před 6 lety +154

    .... this video really rubbed me the wrong way...
    Ive watched a lot of your ANTM videos and I agreed with some of what you said and disagreed in other places. (seeing as hair is your profession you'd understand the technical side far better than me) but some of the girls with long hair had GORGEOUS hair.
    Speaking as a girl who is proud of her long hair (it is very much one of my main points of confidence in how I look), to have someone cut off my hair so short and not be able to see myself... the thought it horrifying. One of the first things people notice about me is my hair, and despite knowing it will grow back, it is a very emotional thing for me. I put in a good amount of effort into growing my hair out long and healthy. It takes a lot of trust to put my hair in someone else's hands, so not being able to see what's happening to it is HORRIFYING (especially given that things can go really wrong or really right on this show). When you spend years growing out and taking car of your hair, I really think it becomes a big part of a girls confidence and pride. Add any cultural influence and the emotions will be worse. That's not to say that we won't enjoy the outcome, it's just that the process can be very emotional. When I saw her hair I knew they were going to cut it off and TRUST ME. I mourned for her beautiful hair. That's not to say that her hair isn't beautiful after, but it takes a lot of dedication, care, and love to grow long and healthy locks and any emotional reaction she had it totally acceptable. It personally irritates me when people try and give me shit when I get a little emotional during a cut. This is my hair and it's a large part of how I present myself to the world; it's a large part of my confidence. To chop it all off... there's going to be some emotions. If they want to just do whatever to her and not even let her see (especially since they get no say) then she has all the right to be emotional.
    I saw some comments about this next point in the comment section, but the part where you were excited for ^^^ panic at her hair being cut off REALLY rubbed me the WRONG way. I do agree with the person who commented that people can be very sensitive to things and I know you didn't mean it in a way that would wish her to have a panic attack. It's very likely you were just excited for drama. That's fine. But in my life I've had a couple panic attacks and some BAD anxiety at times. At first I didn't know what was happening or why I would react that way to situations where I didn't think that reaction was warranted. All I can say is that my experience with panic attacks was horrible and it was a shitty feeling to live out. I know you didn't mean it that way, I really do... but to hear that just reaaaally wasn't what I was expecting from you. In all your videos you came off as playful whenever you commented. Even if something could be construed as rude, it didn't come off that way at all. You always seemed very nice, but in these videos (this one in particular) you can off as rude, mean, and dismissive. It just was like... woooah. What?
    It just came off as really OOC compared to how I've seen you in other videos and I didn't like it.
    And this is EVERYWHERE in the comments, but when you commented that the girl with blonde hair needed to stop complaining/being whiny. That's probably the biggest problem I had with this video. Ive seen you react to hair bleaching fails before and I've heard you comment about the danger and damages that can go on to people who dye their hair (especially when it's already damaged). Those people I do feel bad for, but I also know they did it to themselves. In this case, a trained professional (on a show where they are apparently trying to make top models) saw a girl with bleached and damaged hair decided to bleach and damage it more. She can't see what's happening and she's left in the dark as to what the professionals are doing to her but trusts them with her hair anyways. Now, she looks and sees her hair falling out?!? I would SCREAM if I saw that. These are PROFESSIONALS who are on TELEVISION for a show about MODELS. They did her wrong there. She had every right to act the way she did, and when you commented that she was being dramatic and needed to stop whining... well that pissed me off. If she hadn't noticed when she did, her hair could've been nonexistent. "Trained professionals" would've destroyed her hair into literally nothing but you just commented she needed to stop complaining???? At the beginning of the video you were excited for the drama the girl I previously talked about would bring when they cut her hair, but now someone is being too dramatic (which you wanted) in a situation where she is RIGHT to be making a fuss??? When I compare the videos of you reacting to bleach fails and this situation (and this reaction series in general) you seem so much nicer to the people who ruined their hair themselves compared to the person who just got her hair destroyed by a professional on television.
    I don't know why this video in particular was so mean compared to what I've seen from you in other videos (both this series and other videos on the channel) but I really didn't like it.
    Idk. I just really thought the way you reacted in this video was just so mean. Someone commented in the comments about how If this was the first video they saw by you that they wouldn't have become a fan like they are as you came off as so mean in this video. I definitely agree with them. If this was the first video I saw, I probably wouldn't have become a fan either. Idk, this video just turned me off this series. I'll probably just go watch videos of ANTM myself

    So i recently dyed my hair pink. The first salon i went to the lady took one look at me and said 'yeah, no. Your hair has no chance of lifting.' I have pretty dark hair so at first i kinda understood where she was coming from but then she just brushed me off like i don't have the right to be at her salon. I went back and said well what if i bring the pink dye to u. She said no seriously sweety maybe u should try black or a darker brown. THE ONLY REASON I WANT TO DYE MY HAIR IS TO MAKE IT PINK. I WOULD NEVER MAKE MY HAIR A NATURAL COLOUR WHEN I ALREADY HAVE IT IN MY HAIR I WANT PINK OR PURPLE OR GREEN BUT RIGHT NOW I WANT PINK.
    As you can see, i was really pissed off. So then i ended up going to the more expensive salon down the street and they were like the nicest people ever. And u know what?
    MY HAIR BLEACHED TO LIKE ALMOST WHITE ON THE FIRST GO AND THEY SAID SURPTISINGLY MY HAIR WASNT THAT DAMAGED. 'It won't lift' IN UR FACE SALON LADY. When they were finished i literally went straight past the same salon and i made eye contact with the salon lady and flipped my hair.

Hair is important for some people, and telling girls to suck it up is kind of uncalled for. And high fashion models now, especially runway models (I work in the fashion Industry) usually have to keep their hair natural/virgin, and wigs and extensions are used for more dramatic colors

      Well first off, they're aspiring to be future models! It's kinda their job description to accept extreme makeovers. Crying over hair is OVER DRAMATIC!! Secondly, they've probably been told to cry on purpose for TRPs (and Brad knows that). So chill.

      @@antimonyrocks3939 At what point does crying NOT become "over dramatic" for you when a person loses a deeply sentimental thing they've had their whole life? When a watch their grandmother gave them breaks? When their car is totaled? When their house burns down? When their dog dies? When their parent dies? Even if someone willingly goes in to getting their hair cut, which holds a lot of sentimental and sometimes cultural value for many people, they cannot be expected to be completely stone-faced about it. That's ridiculous and bordering on sociopathic.

    Hair is a cultural thing in India. If it didn't have so much meaning I'm sure she would have been less scared. When you're reacting to a video that consist of individuals who are culturally diverse you should consider watering down your responses in case there is something you do not know about. At the same time I figured the girls should know what they signed up for. I still think in this situation it would have been best to be a bit more sensitive.
