    Your a excellent mechanic and didn’t leave anything neglected. Never realized the piston pin plugs could get loose either. My car is a 05 Subaru Forester 2.5L and at 72k miles had leaking head gaskets. Ordered this JDM 2.0 L SOHC engine with 57k miles had sludge on the valve covers and it happens from close stop and go distances. Mechanic used my 2.5L valve covers as their was sludge on valve covers to which he also had swapped the timing belt with 8k miles and did all appropriate changes. Only after 2500 miles my passenger side camshaft sprocket cracked in pieces to which it blew out the timing belt cover and the timing belt came off. I’m not sure if valves are bent yet but assume so. I’m still going to put belt and sprocket on first and try starting it.
    How it started was I parked to get food at a store and only traveled 3/10 of a mile to which this happened. I used sea foam and changed the oil in like 300 miles and put sea foam in the engine and in the gas tank. Car engine was running great and only added 1/2 quart of oil at 2000 miles. Just baffling how this camshaft sprocket on passenger side busted in 5-6 pieces. It was 4 months later when this was installed as I wasn’t traveling all over the place. The timing belt tensioner was new and swapped over from the 2.5 L engine. Does that need to be pumped out of air first before putting on timing belt? I believe everything was done right and this was a freak occurrence. So the crankshaft sprocket had to be replaced on the JDM engine just like you did.
    Anyone else have their plastic camshaft sprocket break? Stupid material used because if it was made of metal would not have happened. The drivers side camshaft sprocket is made of metal. Would anyone reading this be pissed off if this happened to them?

      You really should of kept your low millage EJ25 and just replaced the head gaskets….. also those plastic sprockets are in all of the EJ engines passed 2006 I believe, they shouldn’t have broken that easily… I believe the timing on your car was off OR you had a bad or weak(non-Subaru) timing belt tensioner.

    All kidding aside, for a modern engine, those seem fairly straightforward to R&R, without the normal engineering blunders we have to deal with on other brands.These days automakers only care how easy things go together on the assembly line - after that, they could care less, and it shows. Thank God for Subarus!
    Smart to replace all those seals. You probably remember hearing my tales of the '89 S10 Blazer engine swap 8 years back - when I installed the '00 4.3 engine into my '89 S10 Blazer, I cut corners big time, and just threw the engine in without changing anything, except for the remote oil filter lines. Wouldn't you know, just 1000 miles down the road it developed an oil leak about as big as the head gasket leak on the OE engine! That'll teach me! Engine came out a second time exactly a year after it went in. 😖 Replaced every single seal and gasket that time! Guess you could say, I learned something there ... 😂

      Yeah Smitty, I remember you telling that story (nightmare?) on the Blazer. What a headache, but you persevered thru it. These old Subaru engines do leak alot, but they are easy to work on.

    Ya I have to do the same gig with my Speedster engine .Im not sure if the timing package was changed with its 139000km.But I do know its a good engine other then the tensioner acting like the sound of piston slap ,but that will get nailed down with what your doing here in your vid. I might up date head gaskets in time as well as upper engine rubbers and such. Nice to see your mutual interest in the subie engine. Chow Lou
