- This section explains Raskolnikov's mindset as he undertakes the murder. It is a very superstitious mindset, where he sees significance in chance opportunities and chance explanations for why a murder would be committed. There is confusion in Raskolnikov's brain on these matters, and he is not able to solve the confusion before or immediately after the murder. This is a key moment in the book (obviously) because it recounts the crime.
