Wide Toe box shoes are hard to find and even harder to find a pair that looks good. So when I saw Birchbury I was really interested in seeing if they are any good and if they are one of the only wide toe box shoes that can easily be pulled off. So Birchbury sent me a pair to cut in half to see what's inside and I was pleasantly surprised at how good they look for a wide to box, minimalist, barefoot, zero drop shoe.

It's funny I came here 2 years ago because some weird youtube guy was cutting in half really expensive boots and Jordan's. I stayed because what you said made sense and I really enjoyed the breakdown... and Toaster. Now I'm watching you cut apart ninja shoes I've never heard of and probably would never have considered before. but now maybe. I agree it takes a lot of faith in your product to agree to have someone cut them in half and judge them piece by piece but those that do deserve respect.
“Not my toes you have to pay for that kind of content” lol

In many of your reviews you mention that the look of a wide toe box is a negative. I wanted to speak up and say that for MANY of us, it is not a negative. We have no issue with the look of a wide toe box on everything from these to the Iron Ranger.
I assume he says that because either he personally feels like it looks weird and I think there are lots of people out there who don't like the look, especially with shoes such as the Iron Ranger. I personally wear 4E sized shoes so to me most shoes just look like a foot prison to me, and most of them are.
After wearing barefoot style shoes for 2 years my Iron Rangers look very narrow on my feet.
Iron Rangers wide? IR's gave me bunions now minimalist shoes are my only option.
I love the wide unconventional toe box. It's healthy, and it makes my feet happy. I wear altras when I have to wear shoes. I try my best to just not wear shoes whenever I can
I agree I like how it looks and chunky boots/shoes in general look better to me
I’ve been wearing these for 7-8 months. I took a shoemaking course from Jason Hovatter and he talked about designing shoes with a wider toe box. These shoes are very comfortable and have held up well. Walking on trails I desert southwest this winter the traction at times wasn’t what I would have liked. But that was up & down in Sandy trails. Good job, Rose Anvil!! 👍
Dude. Officially sold. LOVE that Birchbury was willing to have you tear them apart, to me that shows brand transparency/integrity. I've been on the fence, but I'm going to need a pair now.
I am thinking of buying one. How is it holding up after 2 years?
Can you please call out more women's shoes? I'd be super interested in watching that!
I wish lol we need to find a woman that is willing to do this. But you know the choices would be huge. Lol
Rose Anvil did do Blundstones and Doc Martens. :)
Would love to see him cut open some American Duchess shoes--really cool brand made by some really nice ladies that seem to have a genuine passion for shoemaking/historical reproduction, but I would very much like to know if the construction of the product itself is somewhat historically close/good quality as well!
@@DM-su3sw American Duchess aren't cheep !! 200$ & + !! not only that the owners one of which was Abby Cox ( if I'm not mistaken) who was practically the face of the brand and Lauren had a falling out .( it was so bad Abby didn't talk about BC she's classy.) There Also was Nicole Rudolph who is a historical shoe maker who contributed with building and designing the shoes who left the company as a creative and engineer for the brand who left as well as she saw her good friend Abby leave to do CZcams. They also got rid of some cool styles that I wanted to buy ... . drama aside they do talk about how they make their shoes based on historical shoes seen on fashion plates sales articles of the period and have visited the workshops were the crafts people make the shoes I think in a CZcams video or on their website...
Hey dude, congrats on 300K! Also like to say that I enjoy the sponsored content from lesser known brands. Great way to expand our awareness of folks on the way up.
Hands down (feet down?), one of the best channels on the Internet, not just CZcams. Because of your videos I have made such great, well-informed decisions about my boot purchases over the last couple years. Fantastic work.
I'll never wear 'regular' boots again after I saw your (sponsored) video about a year ago where you cut in half a pair of minimalist Lems Boulder Boots, which also featured a wide toe box. More than that, though, the Lems were zero drop, thin-soled, flexible, and super lightweight. After I ditched my Red Wings for Lems my walking gait had to change a bit and I had some foot & leg muscle aches for a few days as I trained previously atrophied muscles, but now my knee pain is gone! So - THANK YOU for that vid which sent me down the rabbit hole of minimalist/barefoot shoe research. Lems, Vivobarefoot, Xero, ... lots of great companies out there, but no more heavy-heeled manly man boots for me.
To anyone reading this comment: Do yourself a favor and stop wearing toe-squeezing shoes & boots with heels, or sneakers with sponge-y thick cushioning & unnecessary "arch support" insoles. Start wearing foot-shaped minimalist shoes and you'll feel the difference after a few days of "breaking in" how your body was suppose to walk & run. Wish I'd been turned on to this sooner...
You are absolutely right. I have 3 pairs of lems and I love them. My wife calls them "old man shoes" but she doesn't understand how amazing it feels for my toes to have freedom. I just got the primal 2 from lems about a week ago and I'm still in the process of adjusting to them. Wide toe box shoes are the only way to go.
I 100% support this comment!
I still occasionally wear my Redwings but mostly wear the three brands mentioned. Almost all the minor hip and back pains went away.
An added bonus if you are tall the barefoot style shoes make you look an inch or two shorter.
I’ve been wearing barefoot minimalist shoes for over 2 years. I would recommend them to anyone! I’ve converted my boyfriend and he’s coming around to their aesthetic too. There’s nothing as aesthetically pleasing as comfort!
🤨
Same, but for three years now. I actually like how they look now.
Any good ones to recommend? The quality of a lot of them look really bad
I also converted my boyfriend 😅
This was great timing. I need to replace some casual sketchers (cheap shoes) and this video came out. With your stellar review even with the sponsorship, I feel like you're straight with your audience so I ordered a pair.
I started with the white pair and fell in love so much I bought the brown and taupe colors. By far my favorite shoes.
I've been wearing Xero shoes for a while now, but their offerings are more casual/athletic in nature. I decided to give Birchbury a try and I was happily surprised. I got both the Bramford and the Brenston and think they are both excellent. They also included normal laces in the box in case one prefers them to the elastic laces, which is nice.
300k, way to go! You deserve it, man!
I find “wide toe box” shoes so interesting since I’m so used to having my feet tightly in footwear when I was a dancer.
Fascinating story.
No criticism, but just curious: what are your feet like now, in terms of health?
@@thisguy2973 probably bunions, hammer toes, mortons neuroma, etc…
@@thisguy2973 As someone else who did pointe for years but spends most of her time barefoot... My feet are very normal. I never even lost a toenail when I was a dancer. BUT! My company's director had a degree in sports medicine, so we were taught how to take care of our feet properly. None of these old wives' tales like "just tape your blisters down". All of our dancers wore Gaynor Mindens with thin gel inserts too, and that made the biggest difference. At the time, those were the only pointe shoes available that used sports technology and modern construction rather than the traditional paste. I don't know about now. But those pointe shoes lasted months vs weeks, they were highly customizable, and they genuinely protected our feet from the horrible things I've heard from other dancers. Sure, they look a little different to trad shoes, but I'd take them over ruined feet any day.
just checked out their page from the link and their sizing printouts are one of the best ideas for online shoe shopping that I have ever seen! =) I wish more companies offered that kind of sizing chart for their product.
These remind me of my favorite shoes ever, a pair of sketchers from the late 90s that were their answer to Van's. Thin but tough herringbone sole, suede upper, fitted insole...those shoes lasted me several years of daily wear, until a painting accident ruined them.
I'm probably gonna get a pair of these. You got my subscription, for showing me shoe and boot options I never would have found otherwise
I would love to you you take apart some rollerskates (maybe just the boots) - there are some premium ones that are pretty pricey, through to 'cheap but decent' and then some really trashy nasty ones
I built a pair of quads for derby and you're right, a good boot is not cheap. My last pair were Riedell 595s. At $300 they were mid-range. Besides being hand-made, you're paying for the super stiff counter and base/sole. They're also a low-volume product, so like he pointed out, as a manufacturer your cost for small quantities of certain parts are going to be high, and it's also very likely you and the competition are buying from the same manufacturer.
While interesting, I don't think they would compare to the style and design of the regular shoes he destroys since they are so purpose-built and are intended to have a sole plate bolted onto them.
I would love to see this too! Literally came on this video to try and suggest the same thing lol
This guy is amazing. Very authentic and believable. If I'm ever looking for someone to do a promotional video, you're hired! Great job. I'm buying a pr of Birchbury's
I own these shoes. They are very comfortable. The leather is amazing: very thick, soft and nice character. The build components (uppers, soles, insoles laces and liners are of good quality. I like the wider toe boxes, gives my aching sore toes a break. Overall my balance feels better, then shoes are easy to slip into. I am noticing the effects of zero drop. I am having some A-Tendons and calf straining. Thanks for the product breakdown and review.
Thank you A TON for this video ! I just got my wide-footed husband a pair and he is loving them! No more squished toes
Order arrived in a timely manner. In every respect very pleased with the fit, finish, quality of materials and manufacture. Very comfortable from the first wearing.
I'm a big fan of Altra shoes... Might need to try these out!!!
First time viewer, never thought about tearing apart a shoe for reviewing purposes, not sure why. Since, I love seeing all kinds of electronics gutted to see what's makes it tick. I already brought a pair of Bramfords recently, prior to viewing this vid. And this vid hits the nail on the head for me. Exactly my thoughts and I'm happy to see this vid of the internals of this shoe. I was so satisfied that I ordered the Brenston.
I like their style ....... I think I need some of these
Super glad to see you do the total deconstruction again, I think it's been since the white sneaker series since you've done that.
i got a pair of these a few weeks ago and they're some of the most comfortable shoes i've ever worn
Thanks for doing these tear downs. Your one video did more to convince me to buy than two dozen Facebook add exposures!
I buy almost all my shoes one size up, just to make sure I have that extra toe space haha. Good to find out about this company
I would love to see you cut apart a pair of altras! They are some classic zero drop shoes that I'm absolutely obsessed with.❤️
Love it when Toaster judges the hell out of the item you're reviewing. Seems everyone in your fam knows how to appreciate things 😆
I have some similar barefoot shoes from Patagonia... It did take a while to get used to feeling of looking down and seeing 'clown shoes' on my feet, but they are very, very comfortable. I ended up getting compliments on the shoes most days I wore them and the days I did not I didn't care because my feet were so relaxed.
Looks like I’m here in time. Gonna wait for the dress shoes to come out. I need the wide toe box!!!
Feet have been less painful since giving minimalist shoes a try.
My daughter is polydactyl on both feet. The one pair of Roxy shoes that I paid $80.00 CAD 🇨🇦 for fell apart way too fast. I hope they sell in boys sizes too, because she needs this just for quality of life and her tastes are skewed to unisex styles! Super excited to check these out!
Nice! I've been super interested in these since Kickstarter
This vid convinced me to buy a pair-these shoes are _awesome._ I guess I’m the kind of person this appeals to, but I wear them to work everyday. Strong recommend.
How have they held up? Is the insole coming apart? Thinking of buying these as well.
Nice review as always.. These shoes remind me of "Born".. I've had a few pairs, they were pretty comfortable
I've been eyeing these for a while now and I'm definitely thinking about getting a pair. I ordered my first pair of lems probably about 6 or 7 months ago after watching one of your reviews and they've changed my life. I now have 3 pairs in different styles but it's the wide toe box that keeps me coming back. If anyone reading this is curious about trying wide toe box shoes but aren't sure about going to a full minimalist shoe, check out the trailhead or mesa from lems. They both have a thicker sole like other shoes but still have a wide toe box. The trailhead is a bit like a hiking shoe but looks more like a skate shoe. I fell in love with mine as soon as I put them on. The mesa is more of a running shoe and looks like one. Do your feet a favor and stop squishing them into shoes that aren't shaped like your feet.
Lems is a great entryway to barefoot shoes (and a great daily driver). We need to see the new Kourt on this channel!
On another review video a commenter mentioned "buyer beware" since the soul had completely separated from the leather upper after only 5 months. I was considering purchasing a pair, but $99 isn't cheap, and for that price I would want them to last a long time.
Yeah, I'm surprised the outsole construction wasn't covered in this video. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, since it's a sponsored "review"...
I watch and tell myself it’s just gonna be a quick look but end up finishing all the videos I’ve started. Good channel and honesty I sense. What a novel idea!!That company will have to expand. The shoes are quality as I saw you struggling to ‘slaughter’ the one half. The shoe put up a good fight so I’m thinking bang for my Buck. The leather looks great
Always enjoy watching your channel buddy!
man i have been looking for exactly this type of shoe. part of the original reason i subscribed to your channel!
Finally! A video with a 10/10 center score!
Just got a pair today in the mail. Wore them all day at work and love them. I had to take out the elastic laces though, they felt a bit too snug when standing still. The shoes also come with a pair of optional sticky back foam heel pads to stick to the heel counter...
How are they holding up after a year?
I think this was a smart sponsor from birchbury, I def want a pair now :O
I bought the shoes before I watched most of the video. Thanks for shining a light on these shoes.
I am glad to see that your channel is growing. Congratulations!
Thank you for your time and effort to introduce a new shoe brand and educate us.
Please can you review GSM SD by “Onitsuka Tiger”?
Thank you
Dude... it's like you're reading my mind! I was already reeling for a couple weeks with the idea of having to shop around for sneakers now that boot season is coming to a close, and this shoe is ticking all the boxes for me! I don't normally buy shoes online cause it's really hard to find ones that fit me, but imma trust this company's refund policy and order me a pair for sure.
EDIT: Nevermind... the website is telling me that they can't ship to me despite the website saying that they ship to canada?
I have a pair of these. The soul and the rubber surround separated after about 9 months. I would not have noticed except it rains a lot here and my socks stared getting soaked. They are comfortable and everything else is holding up. The leather is great, the laces are great. So I just wear them in the summer and shelve them for the northwest winters.
I love my Birchbury's. Enjoyed watching this.
These are AWESOME. I'd love to try a pair
Well played Rose Anvil. I watched the video and was immediately on board with the product and with the company. 1 pair in brown size 43 on order.
I can't wait to try 'em! Just got a email confirming shipment! Purchase based "solely" on this video. (thank you) (update 8/2/21 - just got 'em! they fit perfectly! used the sizing recommendations on the website. they feel real comfy. Been walking around the house, gonna break 'em in slowly. I'll keep ya posted!)
Ohh I've been wearing Altra runners for years so these are up my alley
These look great! I just bought a pair thanks to your video. Cheers!
Altramakes some like these. Had a pair for running for awhile. The birchbury looks good. Thanks for the info
I have freak wide feet and last winter started seeing ads for birchbury's. I went for it because I needed something that wouldn't jack up my toes and toe nails. These are my favorite shoes now. Like slippers. I liked so much I bought a 2nd set and just have in their box in my closet. Just in case because they are a small company. I have had them for 6 months and wear them daily. They are holding up really well. The sole is thin. So my guess is this is where they will fail. The uppers just keep getting better looking.
These shoes are the fucking bomb. I bought a pair because of your review and I am jazzed. They are fucking beautiful and super comfortable. And your review has allowed me to be more confident in. My purchase. So far, I’m loving them.
So I came across this after I bought these. I bought them on a whim because I normally wear 3-4e width for the toe box room. I have been wearing them all day for the past 2 weeks and I don’t even think of them. I wear a us15 and these are awesome. I am probably going to pick up the dress show as well
Congrats on hitting 300K subscribers!
I'm on my third pair and love them. I work 10 hour shifts on my feet and have never had less pain. I highly endorse.
I needed a new pair of sneakers and this is right on time. I have seen you tear apart boots much easier than these sneakers.
Just bought a pair because of your video, Thank You!!
Man I'm sold. These look great!
Looks decent. I've got a pair of Frye sneakers wirh a similar look, but have full leather construction inside. They've been awesome for years now!
I own a pair of $20 American Eagle shoes I got from Payless before they went under that look a lot like a $20 version of these. They're one of the most comfortable pairs of sneakers I've ever worn so you've got my attention immediately.
Those look really good! I'd like a pair or two.
I'm glad I have so many great barefoot shoes to try out thanks to your videos.
these keep coming up in my FB feed adverts, I've been interested I wear a lot of keens because of the wide toe box. I guess now that I've seen this review I might as well buy a pair.
These look fantastic! I so wish they made them in a 38 😭 I would love to order a pair.
You got me sold on these shoes! Thanks!
Nice of them to see quite segmented market, ppl with wide feet. Kudos to them
They look nice and the toebox is very attractive as an option, but I question the tread, especially for work.
That brown pair looks nice
Congrats on 300k!!
Just ordered a pair in black!
I've been curious about these since their launch.. thanks.
Why's this guy always gettin into the trends I start getting interested in at the same time.
Barefoot is a trend I've been getting into lately and it follows the "wide toe box" thing.
I think having a look at barefoot shoes might be another thing to look into!
Good stuff. Thanks for the review and kudos to Birchbury. A lot of foot-shaped shoe fans are outdoors people - I'm guessing - so I'm hoping Birchbury is thinking along the lines of a Lems Boulder hiking boot but with a real leather lining and a rugged lug sole like Viktos Johnny Combat Boots or at least as grippy as the Oboz Bozeman Mid.
I'd be really interested in seeing what you think about a pair of tabi boots, and how they compare to these. They'd seem like a high fashion version of this approach to shoes
Would love to see u review One of Ann Demeulemeester’s boots or Rick Owens geobaskets
What about Vivobarefoot? I have the Addis model which is a leather sneaker very similar to these. Super confortable and the build from what I can see inside my shoe looks very similar
vivos are hard on your feet. I sold my vivos quick.
To me these look like the perfect driving shoes!
Would love to see you do a video on vivobarefoot shoes. I need to start looking at this type of shoes since breaking my foot.
I've been needing new shoes but have been putting off getting any 'cause I have wide feet. There aren't many good ones for women that match my style that won't kill my feet. Definitely trying these out
look forward to the dress shoe. I need something to replace my 9 to 5 lems.
I went with a pair of Carets barefoot style dress shoes. They are quite nice and dressy enough to pass for most occasions.
I got them hobbit feet and these are just fantastic. Right size too thanks to their online tool where you can print out the actual outline of the size you are looking for. FYI they also come with extra padding you can attach to the heel for extra comfort.
So far so good, no break in needed for me.
How are the shoes holding up now?
@@blues03 not the original commenter, but I got mine for 3/4 of a year now and really like them. They held up great in every area except the glue between sole and upper. They don't come apart because of the stitching, but there is a small gap on the top which is annoying. Will probably be less noticeable with the black pair (I got white).
I just order a pair I have wide feet to always wore sandals my biggest issue is a small toe box in must shoes are small. Super excited to get the and great price
Reminds me of seeing old timey shoes. They were a lot more like this with a wider/bigger toe box.
I love the look of a wide toe box
Crazy helpful, thank you! Also, more Cat content please! Wide Toe foot content is great. Thanks!
I didn’t realize that about the origin. I also grew up on and even still mostly wear flip flops. My feet are pretty much a triangle shape strait up. I wear altras for athletic stuff and have a pair of their leather casual shoes which I love, but they discontinued them. Guess I’ll be giving these a try.
Cool shoe, all the best to Birchbury and congrats on the 300k Weston.
Would love to see a comparison of these to the Lems NineToFive shoes!
What would be cool is a hightop style. I had a pair of white leather Hightop Basketball Pumas that I bought in the 80s that looked a lot like those . They were my favorite shoes for 3 years. I was so sad when they were beyond repair. I think you are right.. the cost of repair of a 100 buck shoe isn't really cost effective... although I hate to see old friends go. I'll check them out. Thanks.
I was on the website and saw your video. So I clicked on your video to use your link to purchase the shoe 👞. I hope it helps. I know mat used to be an engineer and now more of an entrepreneur side of things.
Unfortunately, my Bramfords started to fall apart in less than a year. One of them lets in a lot of water when walking to / from my car if there is pretty much any amount of water on the ground. Mostly indoor office wear. Still trying to find something similar that will last longer. :(
That's the same comment I keep reading about them. That's too bad, as i was considering purchasing a pair. I would if they were cheaper. But at $99 I'd expect them to last longer.
Do you wear them daily?
I think this problem should be solved after they switched from gulvanized soles to cupsoles
Also , I’m pretty sure i liked this vid as soon as you did a 10/10 on the center cut score.
Tempted to try these for skating
