just wanted to share something, recently took the reso head off my kick drum for a show, and i loved how it sounded, both to me and out in the audience. perfectly punchy, but the batter side had just a little resonance, which got picked up by the mic and blended nicely. if you are getting too much ring when you mic your kick, and can't seem to muffle it, try this.

@miketwo345 The hole allows for more air to flow out of the bass drum which will change the sound of the drum. It's also great for engineers so they can mic it up.
@missystu I appreciate you commenting, but you have to understand that everyone learns at different speeds. Some students need more explanation, and some will need less. In my case, it's always better to explain things for longer rather then to try and shorten and condense everything. I agree there are probably certain parts that I could leave out though. @ChazzLord I truly think what sounds "good" is subjective. The engineer that's taping your drums is doing that because they think it sounds better that way. There is no right or wrong in that case, just opinion. I have had engineers tune my drums up and I think they sound horrible but it doesn't matter cause that's how they want it to sound and they are the ones paid to record the drums for the artist. @CrimsonMooner No, I would normally straighten that out by adjusting the tension rods slightly.

@sprydo7 I actually should've straightened that out but never got to look at it under the lights. I should've taken some extra time and evened it all out.

Putting a hole in the outer kick head for me makes such a huge difference in the punch and thump of the kick drum, i have done this to every kick drum I have ever encountered. I have used a fleece blanket, or just fleece material from a fabric shop cut into the right size, folded and placed along the bottom of the drum so it rests along and touches the inner edges of bother batter and outer heads, and covers about 1/3 of the circumference of the drum heads.
I have used strips of any cotton cloth, from an old t shirt for example, and tape those to the tom heads, and only ever had to do that in a live setting where the mics were picking up the ringing of the heads, esp if the heads are ringing due to other instruments such as the bass. One trick I have used on all my toms for many years is to add a small amount of cotton balls to the inside of the tom, this helps dampen the lower head just a bit, and allows the head to ring for a bit as the cotton balls will bounce off the head when it first vibrates allowing for some ring, then dampens the head as they settle back down on the inside of the head.
Bass Drum: I love the EVANS EMAD2 Batter Head. Forget all that interior stuffing that shifts every time you pack your drums for a gig. The EMAD comes with 2 sizes of dampening rings. I run the larger one for optimum dampening. I even run the EVANS Retro Screen Resonant Head and the drum still sounds amazing. BTW....Jared, love your lessons, attitude and mad skills...and your t-shirts are comedy. Keep up the great work. DRUMEO is the new best friend.

@chickensandbeandip It's not that it doesn't work, it just doesn't give me the exact sound I want. I usually use it in conjunction with other muffling.

I bought drum dampening rings and i have a spare one. I put it on the batter side of the bass drum and i also placed a small car pillow on the resonant head and it works! I achieved that punchy sound without killing all the resonance.
I was using Gaffe Tape on the floor tom. Couldn't silence the ridiculous resonance. Tried the tape + toilet paper method. Finally got it! Ended up taking off much of the tape I had previously used because the toilet paper deadening was so powerful. That really works!
I use the moon gels and put them on the inside of the reso heads of the toms, works perfect for me.

Sorry if I've missed this in a video, but I have a couple of questions. #1 - in what scenarios would you muffle the batter vs. the reso head? #2 - do you have any videos where you show the difference in the effect of muffling vs. not? #3 does muffling work well in a church situation where acoustic drums are never mic'd , but are playing with a full band running through a sound system? I use those Remo rings, but they really don't do what I want them to. That's a lot of questioning. Sorry.
I have a cheap drum set from a garage sale with the stock heads that are god knows how old. Haven't had a chance to change them yet. They have a ton of sustain and I wanted to cut that down a lot. I rolled up some old T-shirts and put them inside the toms similar to what Jared does to his bass. Added a moongel to each one and they sound way better. I still plan on upgrading the heads but until then this will do.
You can put moon gel on the bottom snare head to lessen snare buzz. It works great!!!

I've never met a drum I haven't been able to sort out with gaffer tape! It can be put as a strip under the snares, it cuts out excess ring and very useful when recording. Create a "pinch" to take out the ring from toms where you want more of a thud than a boom. It doesn't affect the stick response and is as cheap as chips. Most studio engineers can get almost any kit to record well and a roll of gaffer tape is never far away.

There are ripples in the resonate head of your bass drum. shouldn't the lugs be evenly tensioned before you begin to muffle?

I can't afford a Evans EQ pad so I use 2 towels. and i lay them long ways in the drum so that they touch both heads. It works great!!!

Incredibly helpful, it supposedly sounds way better now. The flippy snare ringing at maybe -0:54 is just as gone as the muffly kick resonance at roughly11:47. And your playing of course is anywhere between 1 and 10 again, I guess. Suuuper helpful video, big smooch for that one.
I use moon gel, but I found with my new drum heads they dampened it a bit too much. I still need to dampen them a little so I used those little sticky decoration things that kids use on windows. Kinda like the sticky hands that you throw that stick to things. (hope all that made sense) I got a pack of 12 for $1 and it worked extremely well. And I've got an underwater scene on my drum heads. lol

All you have to do is cut the moon gels in half or in thirds or even fourths.... Nothing works better than moon gels.
When you start out it's not important to have one. Later on when you start caring more about tuning and shaping the sound of the drum you will want one there for making quick changes until you settle on something you like. Then later on you may find it nice to pop a mic inside the hole for recording a good bass whoomp of the beater hitting the batter head to mix with the boom coming from another mic picking up the resonant head.
I have used the paper towel with duct tape for years. Gaff tape IS better because there is no residue. I don't use a bunch on the smaller toms but more on the floor tom because I can get a better thump when I play eighths on it. I tried the moon gels and also the gel stickies but I didn't think they were as effective. So I'm glad that there are some other drummers who do the old school dampening.
I use steel or aluminum snare drums tuned pretty high.. A single sheet of paper laid on the head is all I use. You'd be surprised how much it kills over tones.

Jared...at the front of Bass drum...the light reflection showed it was not tightened to much, is this a consideration to get your BD sound w/o resonating too much?
btw...thanks for your video...pretty helpful...I've had Evans(oiled filled) they sounded great on my Gretsch (concert toms)...yeah, old school w/o rims or bottoms. They sounded great!

@xSlipknotTomx Pretty much. This is probably a little gummier then cello tape though.
One way I "invented" to eliminate snare buzz, I went to my local supermarket and got a washing up sponge, it is about 5 inches long and 1/2 inch thick. Lay the sponge along one arm of the cradle sponge side up. Then lay the snare wires lengthways along the spongeand voila! no more snare buzz. Obviously you can make up your own mind about how much of the snare wires are touching the sponge, but I've only got a cheap kit so I have the wires full length along the sponge. Try it it works.

For my kick...I swear by Aquarian Superkick I or II...and use 1 medium sized towel very lightly. Does the trick...and good response. Good for live and studio. Putting 2 sheets and an EQ pillow is a lot of muffling....live..I wouldn't like it...unless miced with loud monitor....in the studio might be fine.
double side foam tape works too, just leave the protective strip on top leave the sticky side down so itll stick on the head

I've been using toilet paper for years. Everyone has tp and duct tape laying around. Moon gel is expensive and it does the same thing.

jared, i saw on one of your videos, that you have some white round pad that your pedal hits on the base drum, what are they, do they muffle and give it that less resonanting sound, cause i dont got a hole in my base drum but i was wondering if it would help
@wannabeers Try using Pro Mark Hot Rods. You get the same responsive feel that you get with drum sticks, but the sound levels are way lower :) hope this helps

Question for jared, did you ever try Evans e - rings for muffling toms? I noticed you didn't mention them in the video but I use them for my toms and snare and I much prefer them to the tape and tissue method
I’m sure removing the bottom heads on tom-toms is nothing new, however is it worth it to get that deep sound
Another thing is if you dont have that much mony for drum gum or moon gel a guy i did a drum duet with said to put the little slappy hands that come for like 25 cent works great i put it on my drums and you can here how they sound on my junk...Def try it!!

Hey, jared. I have a question about my one floor tom. It's my deepest one (16). When I hit my drums, they produce a full note. Sometimes there are overtones, but they're not unbearable. When I hit my 16 floor tom, it produces a warbly sound. It produces a good note, it's tuned as correctly as I could get it tuned, and resonates well, but it just sound a bit warbly. What could cause that warble? TY.
hey guys, is it possible to get a tight punchy sound out of a 26 inch bass drum? I ask because I am interested in getting a new bass drum and I am debating between a 24 and a 26 and that would be one of the biggest deciding factors. thanks

so funny. I know this is a 10 year old video but I'm in my 50's and came here to see if there were any new muffling techniques out there only to find him doing what I did 35 years ago. I guess the tried and true always has its place :) in every generation.

I'm having a horrible resonance problem, could the toilet paper work on all the drums? I'm just starting so I'm not comfortable with my tunning to try the snare tightening.
With my kit I got this smal container with pink grease looking stuff in it, I'm wondering now if that is moon gel and if so how do I apply it?

Strips of felt with 3M adhesive spraying on the bottom side then slap it on
it helps protect the head, so you don't get an indent, especially for head bass drum hits.
Really should be doing sound tests on this vid man.. how are we supposed to know how good these muffling techniques are.. I mean you have the drums there, mic'd up and all !
hey jared could you pls reply, your using felt cymbal holder things (dont know the correct name) but the cymbals move freely, on my kit the cymbals are a little restricted even though the felts arnt tight to the cymbal could you tell me why yours move so freely. thanks

i like my drums to have minimal resonance when i play them. i use paper towels and ducttape as well as o rings. thats just how i like them. pretty much the way drums sound on records or in song is how i like them to sound, but its all preference. how much is that moon gel stuff?
$6-$7 I think. Pretty cheap. If you have some money to blow check out drum tacs

Not to pick sides or anything, but I personally find Remo heads to be much better than Evans in the battle of too much or not enough resonance. Just my opinion. I use the clear ambassador on the bottom and the coated emperor on the top head. U may want to try that Jared.
I saw that too but I think it's okay. He has his resonant head very loose which gives a nice low tone and you will inevitably get a few crinkles like that. One trick I have to get rid of them without tightening the head much is a couple of quick passes with a blow dryer ore VERY carefully with a heat gun I use for RC planes.

@missystu perhaps for you, a lot of explanations in Jared's videos are skip-able because for a person who has been playing music for a long time and have a good understanding of music, you don't have to think about some of these simple explanations on a conscious level anymore. as such, you take it for granted that it's 'common sense'. but if you were the 'experienced' instructor that you claim you are, you would understand that some people actually need the explanations.
First you buy a $7000 drum kit . Then you make sure that they have isolation mounts so they will resonate as much as possible. Then muffle them?

+Dan Rivera it's best to start with as much as possible and take away what you need to take away, than to start with not enough and have it resonating in parts but not fully and then if you apply these methods it will dampen the already dampened parts and ruin the whole thing
+ThunderHawk606 everybody has their own preferences, how can you tell anyone what they like is wrong? For my taste though its a waste.
I agree, but the engineer knows how it's gonna be mixed and is allowed to tell a drummer if their snare won't match the song.
***** a 'muffled' DW snare still sounds like a DW snare. he's not hitting pillows here, it's just removing unwanted overtones.
