I'm a huge fan of doing this periodically. I actually get anxious if I have too much yarn or too many wips. Giving away yarn to friends brings me so much joy. Last year I posted it on IG and did a fundraiser giving all the proceeds to a charity. I'm going to try and be very thoughtful with my purchases this year and focus on knitting what I have and not being distracted by shinny things :).

Yeah me too! Idk why but having lots of stuff makes me stressed. I know using it up won't get rid of it, but I've got a million-and-one projects I want to start & finish.

Such a fun episode! I love your approach to organization. With over 500 skeins myself, I am not just doing a no buy year, but forever until it is gone. I’m picturing my stash as my own personal yarn store. 🙂

I really like how you stress that you are not telling people to get rid of their stash. It really is a truly personal thing how big someone's stash is. I have a pretty big stash (600+ skeins) but you've inspired me to document what I have and truly get a feel for what I love. I'm already looking at items to pass along.
I also like how your channel is knitting AND crocheting. So many are exclusively one or the other.

I have mostly acrylic and am trying to build my stash of natural fibers (especially superwash). “I want the sweater yarn.”
This video has inspired me to figure out a way to de-stash the acrylic in 2022. Love your idea of queued projects instead of stashed yarn on Ravelry and can’t wait to see your monthly progress

“I want that sweater yarn!” 😊 I have a large stash and last year I started really utilizing my Ravelry queue to allocate yarn to each future project, that way I can keep track of which yarns are already spoken for. I don’t love having random skeins that don’t have a plan. Trying to get more into scrap-busting designs (like the Seaglass Sweater) to help use up the bits and random skeins.

I love watching you Natalie! The theme or goal for minimizing and simplifying for 2022 really resonated with me and I love it. I am a retired nurse and current quilter & knitter. I have a huge stash of yarn and fabric. I have moved twice in the past 2 years and downsized each time. I am at the point where getting rid things is very cathartic and feels so much better. So watching this episode was awesome! Thank you. PS. Knitting is winning over quilting these days.

I did a stash down in 2019...then 2020 hit and I couldn't get yarn easily and money was tight! In a panic I built it back up to about 30 skeins but that's about as many as I would want at once. It taught me how to appreciate what I have.

“ I want the sweater yarn” please. I’ve been organizing my stash and projects for about a year now. I niw have all of my stash in Ravelry, it makes it so much easier to queue up my projects & plan for the next one. Live what you’re doing. At one time I liked to decorate with my wall of yarn, but not so much anymore. I have evolved to wanting cleaner shelves, less clutter, and selecting what I know I’ll knit with. It’s a learning process!! I enjoy your channel, thank you!!

Usually one thing at a time, otherwise I flit around from thing to thing, and nothing gets done. I do like project bags so all my stuff isn't all over the house. Interesting to see how everyone else does it. I'm in a major clear out, so that might be coloring my way of thinking too... lol.

I’ve been buying yarn for several years so that when I retired I’d have plenty to work with. While I was employed I wasn’t sure what my yarn budget would be. Ha ha. • @chrystlehernandez9502

I want the sweater yarn! I don't keep a stash at all because I love the process of shopping for a project just as much as creating it. I usually have 2-3 projects going, one large and one smaller and 2 on deck ready to go, so after one is completed I'm ready to cast on. And I tend to donate leftovers so there's no pressure or guilt to use them up. After 30 years of knit and crochet this is what works for me.

  • @fallingsun_knits

    “I want the sweater yarn!”
I really struggle with having a larger stash because I know I can only knit with so much of it in period of time, and I find I go through many cycles with colors and types of yarn. I do like having a couple of skeins that don’t have projects in mind in case I need something quickly for a KAL, but I find that if I buy for a specific project I am overall more satisfied with it than if I guilt myself into using stash first. I just recently went through a similar stash reorganization to help me try to get an idea of projects I want to cast on in 2022 and it felt really good purposing that yarn. I’m definitely trying to make more intentionally this year!

As a beginner, I actually like the idea of not having a ginormous stash. Some of it is practical, because I don't have a lot of space, and can't afford to buy a lot of yarn that I will genuinely enjoy using (mostly acrylic and cotton for now as it's what I can afford and is available). But some of it is also because my yarn tastes are constantly changing as I grow as a crocheter and eventual knitter.
When I had only been crocheting for a month, I picked yarn entirely based off of whether or not I thought it was pretty, with no thought to quality, weight/size, what I would do with it, how enjoyable it was to use, etc. I don't regret this as I was able to learn a LOT about my tastes, but it has resulted in me having a lot of yarn that I don't enjoy crocheting with (that i'm currently using up because I want to get it OUT of the way!). This yarn is smaller or bigger than I like, it's uncomfortable to work with, isn't my taste anymore, doesn't make sense for the projects I prefer (making garments with worsted or bulky acrylic yarn makes no sense where I live because it's always hot here!), etc.
I still like having a stash because i'm very flexible with my projects and like knowing I can start something without needing to meticulously plan it, or go to a store first. Yarn is kind of hard to get where I am, so having a stash is essential. But using the yarn when I buy it is also important so that I can learn what yarn I actually like, not just crocheting with, but wearing, washing, and caring for in the long term. I don't want to buy 10 skeins of a yarn I end up realizing I don't like after a couple of weeks of using and washing it. Slowing down my consumption allows me to be smarter in how I buy yarn, which is important not only because it's less wasteful, but because where I live yarn is very expensive, even when it's synthetic fibres.

Ooooh Natalie! I would LOVE that sweater yarn. I already know exactly what I would make with it too. I want to make a nice Ramona Cardigan and I’ve planned on my color scheme for the year will be grays and cool light blues. This would be so perfect. I’ll be happy to pay for shipping.
You’ve done an incredible job of assessing your stash, getting an idea of what your plans are on getting it down, and getting it all organized. It always feels so much better and not overwhelming.
I’m like you in the respect that I do better with a smaller stash. I just shot my 2021 year end review video, my yarn stash video is next then 2022 plans video. I love getting organized for the new year.
Looking forward to seeing your 2022 makes my friend. 🥰

I just picked up crocheting. I have one reusable shopping bag to keep all of my supplies in. My personal goal is to keep my hobby to just this one bag. This includes books as well. I tend to go over board when I start new hobbies. I'm glad crocheting can be set up anywhere.

"I want the sweater yarn!" Your videos are inspiring and motivational. I've been trying to only purchase yarn if I have a specific project in mind, rather than buying random skeins with no specific purpose.

“I want the sweater yarn”. Good for you on destashing. I would not have guessed 58 skeins. All the yarn looks beautiful.

I have worked on my craft room for a week. I have so many projects and different crafts going on in that small room. Knitting and an obscene amount of stash. I took a large amount of acrylic yarn to the thrift store. I purchased it when I first started knitting. Makes your stash look tiny. I have a sewing machine, lots of fabric and all the notions that go with it. I also have a light tower where I will start seeds soon. I haven’t counted my stash but likely something like 300 skeins. I know! What was I thinking. But I have some sorted into future projects with the proposed patterns. I can always make a home for a sweaters quantity of a beautiful gray yarn.

"I want the sweater yarn! " 🙏 i personally love my stash and got worried that its getting too low... lol. When i told my sister (who looms yarn too!) She sent me about 20 of her ginormous stash! I am at knitter at heart and just recently pushed myself into crochet, ao now it seems projects have endless possibilities!!

"I want the sweater yarn!" Thanks for the opportunity! Enjoyed seeing you get organized and planned! I've been enjoying growing my stash quite a bit since I retired - lately I'm focused on sweater quantities generally. I have 100% of my stash documented in Ravelry. Since about 4 years ago each January I export a spreadsheet of my yarn and use random numbers to choose yarns to work with. I do this with most of my projects with a few exceptions usually revolving around gift knitting. It's been great, it helped me use stash I had been carrying around for years and feels like a fun puzzle every time I pull a new random yarn out to figure out what to do with it.

I have tubs and cubbies in a square type shelving like the one you have only bigger. I have lots and it gives me choices in what to use for different projects. Just here in the livingroom I have two tubs packed full and bags of yarn beside my desk. It is so fun to look at it all and plan what I could do with it all. But still "I want the sweater yarn!".

Watched this a year after it was made but find the tips ever useful. I have been leaning toward learning to knit myself garments (not really heavy long sweater though) and reevaluating/cataloging my stash. It seems a pain to enter it digitally but there are advantages like matching yarn to intended makes. I am adjusting my queue of patterns and now need to get even more realistic. Thank you as always for the inspiration and suggestions.

Yay! I love watching your yarn organizing videos! As someone that used to have trouble accessing all the pretty yarns, I do find myself dragon-style hoarding it 😂 I am trying to go through what I have and be realistic about what I want to work with - and accept that some skeins are just not meant to be for me at the moment!
Thanks for this video, it's inspiring as always! ❤ (PS: I'm so freaking proud of you turning Knitty Natty into a full time business. Been watching since the beginning and I'm so proud of your growth!!! 😭❤)

Loved the video! It definitely inspired me to look at my knitting “wish list” and I realized I have yarn or partially enough yarn for most of the projects. While I’m not looking to eliminate or purposefully down size my stash, it was good to find projects for the beautiful yarn I already own. ❤️
