    I would break the yarn cakes by fiber type. Generally when knitting/crocheting I dont mix fibers unless it's for a particular look. Then I would have time in color order. Also you can use a rubber band to hold the labels onto the cake so you wont forget the brand, colorway or fiber content. As a designer those are all super important.

      I actually went on my computer and made an excel sheet to list all my yarn and it’s info and taped a scrap at the end in case I can’t figure out which one it is. For me is so much simpler because instead of searching through my plastic bin of yarn for a certain color I just check the list. It’s really cut down on accidentally doubling up on the same skeins 😅

    So fun and fabs to organize all your yarn! I just wanna drop an FYI, many yarns don't store well long term in cake form. The tension and compression of the fiber can alter it's original fluffy puffy lusciousness, so if you're about to use a yarn, storing short term, or you're not attached to the fibers' current, specific state, cake away! It certainly is more pleasing to look at and easier to store. Otherwise a swift or other method for loosely forming skeins is the preferred 'profesh' method of long term storage. Looks like you're having fun though, so keep it up! I'll just creep back to my yarn cave now...

    • @francescavaughan213
      @francescavaughan213 Před 2 lety +2

      When I'm winding a cake for immediate use I usually wind it with some solid tension, to make sure the cake doesn't fall apart from my center-pulling. I would think that, if I'm going to store it, I could just wind it very loosely, just enough that it stays together, for long-term, and then re-wind it tighter when I go to use it, and that way it wouldn't stretch or flatten while stored. Do you think that would be a reasonable cake-storage solution? Granted stacking them is a lot less safe, because they'll squish into each other and potentially tangle, but if I was careful, maybe made little cake-height shelves?

    • @bananacreampie28
      @bananacreampie28 Před rokem +1

      I wind my cakes twice to even the tension and add some air into the cake! It's cool how much squishier the cakes are after a second wind.

    You could use the brown wool for making a crochet storage baskets. If you do the bottom 2/3 in the brown and use a different color on the top 1/3 it would look like little nesting baskets that you can put on your desk for yarn decoration or you can make a pot cozy with it.

    I sort my yarn cakes by fiber and color. All of my acrylic in one spot in color order and all of the other fibers are sorted in the same manner. It makes it easy to grab a wool yarn when you’re needing it and when it’s time for cotton you go to a different spot on the shelf than where the mohair is.

      From what I've read hanks and skeins keep yarn ralaxed, winding like this adds tension and can stretch the fibers specifically for like your animal fibers if you don't use them quickly after caking. If you double wind them tho you can ease the tension and it makes for a larger more relaxed cake so you don't experience any guage issues with longer storage~

    You can stash the label from the yarn (if you have one) in the center of the new cake so you know exactly what it is and all the other important info from the label.
    Also, with the brown wool yarn you can use 2-3 strands at the same time to equate the thickness of a chunky yarn to make storage baskets for organizing the rest of your yarn.

    I have a larger ball winder and I love it. But I started out with a smaller knit picks one. One thing I will point out is that you can angle the leg that holds the yarn so it is on the opposite side of the handle. That will give you more room and make it easier to wind. I also tie a small knot in the end when I start so that it stays in places. The larger wonder also goes much faster and holds larger balls.

    Yarn cakes look so nice! But don't make them too tight, it might stretch the yarn (that's why more expensive yarns are sold in skeins, so they stay nice).

    So I organize my yarn by size (bulky, worsted, etc) and always rollup the labels to stick in the middle of my cakes! (cakes are the type of yarn ball you were making) That way I don't get confused later when I go to start a new project

  • @alyssamoosekat
    @alyssamoosekat Před 3 lety +1

    I have this exact winder! I got a closet organizer (it hangs down from the rod thing, I think it's technically for clothes, but it's from ikea) and I shove all the ugly ones are in the back lol. I've seen lots of people get a pin board (forgot actual name) and put it up on the wall so it looks kinda like art. You put the center of the cake on a nail, and since there's a bunch of holes, you can adjust it to the sizes of the cakes. Google "yarn storage" or "cake yarn board" or similar and I'm sure you'll find it. It's fairly popular and absolutely gorgeous. I would if I had more wall space.

    I too wound and sorted all my yarns into cakes once, but it's not recommended to make yarn cakes with yarn you're not planning to use in the near (1-2 weeks max) future. The fibers in the yarn are stretched out and changes the yarn when it's wound and kept in a cake or even a ball.

    • @fuzzypumpkin7743
      @fuzzypumpkin7743 Před 3 lety +2

      Yep. I never wind until I'm about to use it. Even if I have 5 hanks going into the same sweater, I stop and wind the next one as I finish with the current one.

      @@fuzzypumpkin7743 I changed my storage too ten numbered bags from IKEA, somewhat sorted by fiber. Hanks only, and through My ravelry stash I can mark in which bag it's stored so I know where to look.
