I went downstairs, and I asked my wife, “What do you think of book mold?” - Gawd, I love BookTube!
Hi Aaron, it's not mould, that is black and alive! From the internet.
"Most of the paper is made from wood which consists of cellulose and lignin. These components are high oxidizing agents and hence turn to yellow when exposed to oxygen over time. Indeed, your books dislike sunlight. The UV rays present in the light prompt and encourage the action of the oxidation process."
You don't need to get rid of them, they are not contagious! Only from an aesthetic point of view. It means the book has been in the sunlight. If you don't want your books to go yellow keep then away from the sun, like they do to protect great paintings. Best wishes.
That's good to hear - thanks for letting me know. I have since gone back through the books I was going to get rid of and have put quite a few back on my shelves. My initial reaction was a little over the top, I think!
The yellow staining isn't mould, it's foxing, and it doesn't spread. It's unsightly, but it's not at all harmful.
I've had to be careful of this myself. I've had to get rid of a few books because of mildew and am picky about used books I take on because of it. If I can't resist an old book that looks spotty, I put it in a plastic bag before letting it near other books.
One of my biggest nightmares
A book just came in with a little bit. I hate it too, but it’s hard to eradicate without going wholesale. You really might consider a _Complete_ to replace that Dickinson selection!
That definitely sounds like something worth considering!
Very healthy decision. I'm asthmatic and mold is the worst and can make you really sick.
Yeah, I've lived in some flats with serious mold issues and made us pretty unwell. Luckily, it turns out that it doesn't look like mold was the issue with all of these, but I'll certainly be keeping a sharper eye on the state of my books in the future.
It’s a good idea to do that. Maybe I should check my own shelves for book mold.
I suddenly have a desire to sift through my entire library now... Oh, what have you done to me with this information?!
To be fair, I think I may have over-reacted here. But it has been a good way of working out what books I'd like to keep and which aren't in a good enough state for a reread. I hope I haven't caused too much distress!
But what’s CAUSING the mold? Is it Joe Spivey?
Well, what else could it be?
I am sorry
But did you follow the Donoghue method and rinse them in the kitchen sink first?
Seriously, sorry this happened, but your stoicism is a model.
Fortunately, it wasn't as bad as I'd first thought - and my books tend to be bought pretty cheap too. I am tempted to give the Donoghue method a try, though...
