    i hope there is enough people that feel as passionately about this song as i do for them to qualify! this is my second place atm behind Vesna!

    This song is in my top 3 this year. I'm completely in love, even more so after understanding the concept behind the lyrics. The melody is dissonant in the verses, and the vocals really resemble a lullaby in the chorus. Sudden Lights was one of the great discoveries of this year for me. Their other songs are also excellent. Thank you, Latvia

    First listen: Pew 😌 It's been years, since we have last sent something not embarrassing to the Eurovision.
    Second listen: hmm, this is kinda good actually
    Sixt listen: Guess this is my ringtone now 😳 I am addicted

    This is currently my favourite song! It has this indie, even prog rock feel to it like Porcupine Tree, Radio Head and Agent Fresco. I love how it switches from 5/4 to 3/4, though the odd time signature may also make that intro so jarring. I also fully agree on your thoughts on wanting to see this qualify. It's gonna be hard, but last year I didn't expect Iceland to qualify either so fingers crossed. I'll definitely toss it some votes

      @ESCTom  Před rokem +1

      thanks for explaining about the 5/4 to 3/4 timing, i dont know those type of technical terms, but i like learning about them 🙏🏻

      @MoonAndMidnight Před rokem +2

      @@ESCTom yeah it can be hard stuff to deal with. Most eurovision songs have a 4/4 beat so it doesn't come up a lot luckily ^^ Can't deny it's fun when it does switch up though!

    Definitely the kind of song that gets better with each listen. It's not quite striking me the first time. I'm saying this as someone who thought Raum would have been the best option for Latvia.

    It saddens me how people are not responding to these creative instrumentals well. People were annoyed at the voices in the instrumental of The Moon Is Rising in Latvia 2021 and now people find the intro of Aija "off putting"...because these were the elements of these songs that wowed me from the get go.

    • @danieljessekaplan7034
      @danieljessekaplan7034 Před rokem +13

      The main Eurovision community want every song in a 4/4 time signature with a standard pop sound

      im open to creative sounds, Cha cha cha and "Samo mi se spava" are my top 2 songs this season. but i still want it to sound pleasing to the ear. anyway im only 1 person, they dont need to win everyone over. just enough to get the votes

    The 2023 song Latvian „Sudden Lights”- Aijā.
    Aijā is a popular word in Latvian lullaby's. Eurovision has something special and surprising this year. something different from other countries. About the cultural values of our nation and how united the nation is together, no matter how difficult it is. Vote for Latvia because they have worked hard? Give them a chance to reach even higher heights in the future.

    A lullaby is, in my opinion, the most beautiful and loving form of music. Seeing the dark world events and people's lives ruined by evil, we could not remain indifferent. That's how the song was made in English, it's our attempt to comfort everyone who is hurt by what's happening. The title of the song in the native language - in the mood of a Latvian folk song - in a word that is impossible to translate," "Sudden Lights" explains the meaning of the song.🇱🇻

    The depressing element of last year's vote rigging is that a nuanced song like this now has little chance of qualifying without juries. Maybe he needs an inflatable rocket.

    • @marxton_

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před rokem

      well belgium has been out a lot longer, i would guess that a lot of people havent heard it yet. it wont let you see your scoreboard until you rate everything and so some people might just put it at the bottom so they can see their list

    How well do you think they did it in the end?

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  Před rokem +1

      i thought it was the best staging that Latvia had had since 2015. Although they had the most beautiful LEDs and they didn't really show them which was such a massive shame

    Lots of comments here and elsewhere that this gets better with repeat listening. That's fine, but as a first time, three minute listen on the night, that won't help them with non-fandom viewers. I'm an indie fan, but this is niche indie. It's way down in the odds with the bookies for a reason

  • @johnmoynahan874
    @johnmoynahan874 Před rokem +3

    Must confess Tom, i didn't listen to any of the Supernova songs this year. There was just so much going on all over Europe and had to be selective in what i was paying attention to. So, this is the first time i heard this.
    I find this ok. Unlike you, indie rock is my vibe completely. Not dismissing this at all but just now, i don't find this special enough. It doesn't grab me and shout "listen to me". Its totally inoffensive to my ears but atm, that is as much as i can say. 3 months to Liverpool though and plenty of time for it to grow into my affections. However, therein may lie the problem. Is it immediate enough to people who will hear this for the first time in the semifinal? I'm not sure
    But like you, i do wish Latvia well
