    Pete, by leaving the elbow to where you can spin it, you can determine your water height by just spinning the elbow to where you want the level of the water

    Turn the down spout around. Face the cut away from the building. Should help wash away the leaves.

    The white exposed PVC pipe needs to be painted in order to protect it from the UV rays coming from the sun. Otherwise the PVC pipe will deteriorate, become brittle and split. I learned this lesson the hard way.

    Stick that poly pipe in the freezer for half an hour that should shrink it down slightly so you can get it in then as it warms up again it will be a tight fit.

    Have you thought about gutter guards to sort of pre-screen out leaves and debris before they even get to the leaf eater?

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading

    Pete if you use gutter guards that have a fine mesh leaves will not enter your gutters. I got mine from Costco and work well

      @@petebeasttexashomesteading so I’ve only watched the first 2. 1-2 so far on the catch water system.I’m guessing that the way you changed
      Will be a good move. We put on 6 inch gutter this spring, and when the gully washer hits you need the bigger volume capacity here in southern , mo. So I was glad you equaled the outflow to 6 inches. But why not do a fill at top of tank? I’m hoping that gets explained as I watch the rest.
      Supporting a 8 ft pipe in air would definitely be a challenge. But I’m trying to figure out how you can fill in bottom without a pump? I’ll wait and see.
      Got new chicks hatching in incubator. Hoping that by March they will be able to add to production, and can feed outside about then.
      See ya.

    Pete just curious why schedule 40 for the overflow plumbing and not the lighter sewer/vent type of piping you used in the rest of the system?

    What is the minimum size for an overflow pipe

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  Před rokem +1

      I have two 4 inch pipes going in and one 4 inch going out for the overflow and it been working great. So I would go minimum of half of what you have going on to the tank.

  • @farmyourbackyard2023
    @farmyourbackyard2023 Před 2 lety

    I’ve heard several people say that the Leafeater failed. It may not be your install. It may just be the product in general.

  • @garyjohn316
    @garyjohn316 Před 2 lety

    Why didnt you just use the outlet that was already on the tank next to the hole you drilled? It isnt that big but it would do the job just fine.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  Před 2 lety

      That hole is too small, it's not even two inches. I have two 4 inch pipes filling the tank and one 1.5 inch hole just won't cut it.

  • @MargaretWalkerCellist
    @MargaretWalkerCellist Před 2 lety

    Yes, leaves aren't good as filters for your clear water harvest.

  • @alwayslooking701
    @alwayslooking701 Před rokem +2

    The Leaf Eater is a failed Australian product. The failings are:
    The filter mesh is set at approximately 35 degrees which is grossly inadequate for debris shedding.
    To make things worse, there is a flat recessed section of mesh at the bottom that dams debris, causing splash.
    There is no protection to the falling water from wind, causing further yield losses.
    In another video, I noticed that you hard connected balance lines between the tanks. This is a big NO! You should have used flexible corrugated food grade hose. I hope that you attend to this ASAP.
    The main point of this post is to comment on your use of the upturned elbow on the tank's overflow pipe. A water tank's overflow pipe must always have a pre hydraulic calculation made to make sure it is of suitable overflow capacity but maybe you are not too concerned about the tank overtopping during heavy rain when the tanks are full because the overflow pipe drains to ground anyway.
    A vertical pipe has a higher overflow capacity than a horizontal outlet at the same height but you have raised the overflow weir from what was a high point already afforded minimal mitigation to one much higher.
    The weir flow over the crest is greater the higher the water level is. The roof area is 2,400 sq feet and so 1" of rain will give 1,500 US gallons of water or 150 US gallons if it rained with a steady intensity of 1/10th of an inch per minute. Would you experience a similar rain intensity very often where you are?
    You have used sch 40 pvc pipe which has an internal diameter larger than nominal and which also varies depending on the pressure rating chosen. The figures below are for a 3.94" (100mm) vertical pipe draining with different water levels above its crest. I have done the conversions from metric figures and they are for an unmeshed orifice. The flap valve fitted at the bottom provides no restriction as opposed to a meshed overflow outlet fitted at the tank.
    1.57" 66 gpm
    1.97" 73.8 gpm
    2.95" 90.6 gpm
    3.94" 104.4 gpm
    4.92" 117 gpm
