- Shetland fiddler Willie Hunter playing The Love O' Da Isles (Love Of The Islands), Compliments To Dan R. MacDonald and Marie MacLennan's Reel with Violet Tulloch and Aly Bain. This was broadcast as part of the Aly Bain and Friends series on STV in the 80s. Great fiddling!

Wonderful memories of loving Shetland music when i discovered it in my 40's and 50's. Now 78, I'm delighted to see the great VioLet Tulloch at the piano. I used to love her playing, also Peerie Willie Johnson on guitar. So grateful when i spent a couple of visits to Shetland to spend a day with Peerie Willie, mostly at the Lounge in Lerwick. Thank you Ali Bain for making my musical journey complete with your great fiddle playing.
I met Willie at Aberdeen Airport a month before he died. I was with Violet Tulloch with whom I flew from Lerwick. I was a huge fan of both. I didn't recognise Willie but Violet saw him and spoke to him. She asked how he was. His answer left us in no doubt he had little time left.
It was the only time I met him.
Just listened to this again after forgetting about it for a while. Absolutely perfect performance, one of the very best.
one of the greatest fiddle players that came out of Scotland
and Violet a great pianist
It doesn't get any better than this...
Absolutely brilliant! Three top class musicians.
Must be one of the very best recordings ever. It has everything, beautiful ensemble and harmonies and Willie's interpretation is totally brilliant, his feeling and light and shade. I sincerely wish we had more great recordings of those three great musicians together!
Shetland fiddle music at it very, very best.
What a star well all 3 of them None of this ceilidh stuff missing beats or off beat stuff , Greatly missed
Willie Hunter and I were in the same class of Apprentice
Blacksmiths at Ramsay Technical College Edinburgh in 1949/50 and I still remember thinking that HE will not finish his trade as a Blacksmith he'll turn to the Fiddle for sure..Charlie Slater ,Retired now in Australia
I met Willie’s niece on Skye with the great Cape Breton fiddler Buddy MacMaster. She said as a young girl she couldn’t get into the toilet because Willie practiced in there for best acoustics .
I'm glad he didn't finish....his calling was the fiddle no doubt. Wishing you the best.😇
@@allanmacleod2234 wow thanks for sharing

No problem. I love this performance, tremendous fiddling from one of the best!
Restin peace.great musican
Pure class, look at the expression on Aly's face!
This guy is the best I’ve ever heard.
One of the most beautiful tunes I've ever heard.
thank you for posting this video of my granddad :-)
So lovely.
This is beautiful. I'm learning to play The Love O' Da Isles at the moment. If I sounded a quarter as good as this I'd be a very happy fiddler!
The notes are simple! Getting the feel is a problem!
I've heard an audio recording of Willie Hunter playing 'The Love O' Da Isles', but this is the first video I have seen of him playing it. Thanks for sharing.
If when he hits this reel doesn't make you want to get up and dance, there's something wrong.
Beautiful
Willie's violin was made by Alex Leask a Shetland violin maker and was number 6 if I remember correctly !
beautiful music
The greatest!!
Even Ally Bain is in Awe
Sublime.
Sheltie fiddle! - Nuff said!. Aly composed a tune for a miss Tulloch. Any relation? I love my wee weekend concerts on youtube. I often find something I want to buy. Most notably the "Trans Atlantic Sessions". Hope youtube never dies!
Perfection
Looks like Willie had a very strong grounding in classical violin. Superb technique, and great sound.
Superb
You can’t deny the wonder of this music at the start, when you feel your heart becoming heavy and tears well up in your eyes.
OH!!!!!
There appear to be 4 people who don’t like this. Ah well no accounting for taste, or lack of it.
neat
Willie was one of the best. He could soften his bow or bear down on it to produce his own unique style and expression. Do you have any information on Willie's violin? It seems to be of very high quality.
Willie has fingers like sausages but boy he can make the music sizzle
The bonus ball, there is no one on the accordian butting in wrecking the fiddle music. No names.
What are the names of the 3 tunes?
What were the tunes after Da
Love of the Isle? Anyone?
Not far from the best hooooooooooooksc
No need for Bain...
Beautiful
