I’ve been tying it for over 30 years the traditional way and sometimes it can be a pain in the butt, particularly in cold conditions or when tying 6x material. What I find works for me is to moisten the tippet / leader materials so that they stick to my hands a bit. I have that type of skin that makes it impossible to open plastic bags at the grocery store without wetting my fingers. Also, having tension on the standing portions helps to tie it. I suppose your method does this automatically since you are holding all strands simultaneously and apply some tension while twisting both ends.
Fun fact: you don’t have to have the tag ends come out in opposite directions. This makes it quick and easy to trim the tag ends with one cut.
Thanks for sharing! After these many years, I don’t know whether I can change method but I can give it a try. 😊

Easy knot and strong as for connecting line to line I agree this is super easy. When I can remember which way I put the lines through. Lol. Hope you find easier methods to keep you fishing!

I must admit…I’ve seen and attempted other ways of tying this knot & failed. This method, however, I have succeeded several times. Like you said it just takes practice and make sure there is plenty of line. Short lines will not work especially if one has big hands. Fortunately, I have small hands, so this method appears to be my choice. Thanks for the tutorial. 👍🏽

  • @ryanandangelamccullough5671

This is a brilliant use of mechanics. We don’t often think of our bodies as machines, but when we do, we can utilize them in ways like this.. the key was understanding chirality- the blood knot is a chiral knot and our hands are perfectly formed to act in that way. I never thought of this. Perhaps the knot is difficult to tie because we are fighting our natural chiral tendencies. Absolute breakthrough thinking on your part.

Just found your channel. This vid came up in my suggested feed. I just couldn't wrap my head around how to tie a blood with my two hands that have fat fingers. I just tried the method you show in this vid and it was very easy! I've always tied my fly fishing leaders with a nail knot. I might switch, if for no other reason than I don't need a tool to do this blood knot method. I'm also now going to use the blood knot instead of an Alberto knot for tying leaders to braid on my bait casters and spin casters.

Very easy even for a guy who is “all thumbs”. The only tricky thing that I had to remember to do was make sure that my fingers kept the center loop ‘open’ while doing my 8 windings. Just seen this, it looks like it's a really great way to tie the blood knot however you do need to have very supple hands to hold all those ends between your fingers. I tried to do it but I was unable to control the line in the way that you described, I've never had any trouble tying the knot in the traditional way though so I'll stick to doing it that way. By the way I was intrigued by those other knots that you mentioned, I'm from the UK and I've never heard of any of them. A very good easy to follow video, well done.

I understand using fly line for this video to make the knot more visible but there's a night and day difference between tying a blood knot with fly line and tying one with tippet.
An exceptional nymph rig that I was taught while guiding in Wyoming is to join three sections of tippet together with two blood knots about 3 ft apart. Then leave one side of the tags on the blood knots long and tie your nymphs to those tags.
Then tie a small drop shot or split shot to the very end of the leader.
Fish it like a normal nymph rig with an indicator but those bugs will dance around in the water tied to those tag ends and they're a fish magnet!
You will have to set a lot because that weight will be bouncing on the river bed and making your indicator go down but it's worth it.
I've caught multiple 25-28 inch fish on that rig.
    👌🏼

I've been tying the blood knot since I was a little kid and don't find it difficult. The traditional method works well for me. I have a method of pinching the loop in the middle that requires only my thumb and first finger on my left hand.
The only time I run into trouble is when I excecute the knot with very short tag ends--less than two inches. It is more difficult with tippet under 4x--but I have trouble with other knots then too.
I hate using up lots of leader material to tie knots!
