As a prisoner of war in Iraq, American servicewoman Jessica Lynch dreamed of the day when she would taste freedom again. And that was a feeling she clung to until the time she was rescued by American troops. However, once on the outside, she knew she had to reveal the real truth of her widely publicized liberation.
Lynch came into the world in April 1983 and grew up in Palestine, West Virginia. From an early age, she had a thirst for travel. “I wanted to improve my life and not just be there in Palestine forever,” she would later recall. “I wanted to get out and do something.”
So she decided that after completing school, she would join the United States Army in a bid to realize her dream of exploring the world. However, her career choice to join the disciplined ranks of the military seemed at odds with her personality, according to Lynch’s father, Gregory. He described her as a defiant youngster. “If someone told her she couldn’t do something, she’d do it just to show them,” he was reported as saying by Biography.com.
Following her graduation from Wirt County High School in Elizabeth, WV, Lynch headed off to South Carolina to begin training for a role in the military. It was September 2001 - just days after the 9/11 attacks on the U.S.
Despite her enrolling in training during such a volatile period, Lynch didn’t think that she would actually be drafted to fight. Instead, she envisioned that her role within the military would be as a store clerk; she hoped that the position would help her develop business skills.
In fact, Lynch only ever imagined spending a short time in the army before returning to her studies and becoming a teacher. However, her dreams were put on hold in 2003 when the Iraq war broke out, and Lynch was sent to the war zone alongside the 507th Maintenance Company.
Unfortunately, it only took a matter of weeks for disaster to strike. Lynch and her fellow soldiers were in the Iraqi city of Nasiriya as part of a convoy when a fault in their navigational equipment inadvertently led them into enemy-held territory. The ensuing hour-and-a-half-long firefight cost the lives of 11 U.S. troops. Lynch was also injured during the incident and captured by Iraqi forces.
Suddenly, Lynch found herself at the mercy of Saddam Hussein’s troops. Indeed, she was now classified as a prisoner of war and held at a Nasiriya’s Saddam Hospital. Lynch had no idea how long her ordeal would last or what her fate might be.
In the end, Lynch was held for eight days before she was liberated. The story of her supposed rescue was later beamed home to television audiences across the U.S. The story served as some much needed propaganda for the government, which was seeking to justify the Iraq war to a domestic audience.
TV footage showed Lynch smiling and relieved after her rescuers had seemingly stormed the compound and saved her life. Tales of Lynch’s heroism were spread far and wide by the U.S. military and media outlets hungry for a story. These included a version of events in which a badly wounded Lynch had earlier fired upon Iraqi forces until she had eventually ran out of ammo and was captured.

Convoy protocol was to get out of the kill zone as fast as possible or to maneuver the vehicles into a herringbone formation to provide the personnel with some cover to return fire from.
Beings that they were “lost”, they were not tactically able to evade the kill zone and most likely did pull the herringbone vehicle maneuver.
If that put her vehicle in a ditch, it was most likely the intention at that time.
Had she maintained her weapon in good working order, she might have been able to help provide covering fire for her convoy, but she didn’t and couldn’t.
She was not the only soldier whose weapon was too gummed up with dust and sand to operate either!!
There were a multitude of mistakes made by those in that convoy that led to several deaths and injured soldiers.
I’ll bet that one of the only reasons that she survived the attack was because her weapon could not fire.
I’d also bet that the only reason that she got to be the face of the war once she was rescued is solely because the Government who wanted a reason to go to war also need to put someone in front of cameras to sell the war to the American public; a champion of a sort to keep John Q. Public backing the war effort.
I served in Iraq myself and I knew we were supposed to be there to find weapons of mass destruction and to “liberate” the citizens of Iraq from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein.
While I was there, I saw whole fields with massive piles of weapons like anti-tank artillery rounds(also prevalently used as IED’s, improvised explosive devices).
That was the majority of what I saw. One pile of those could have been used to eliminate a whole town or small city in Iraq and there were stacks upon stacks of these in fields just outside of most of the forward operating bases where the convoys I was in went.

I always wonder why videos like this assume that the army is clairvoyant. Quoting the Iraqi doctor as saying "why bring guns, there are no soldiers here", the video leaps to the conclusion that the US Army should have known or assumed that US POWs were not guarded by Iraqi soldiers.
I can agree that the propaganda efforts by the Army were stupid, but arming the people who went to rescue her was perfctly correct. Can you magine the video headline if the rescuers were unarmed? "Stupid Army get 120 soldiers killed by sending them in unarmed to rescue a POW. Stupid Army believed Iraqi spy who said no Iraqi troops were guarding POWs."
    This video is biased junk.

I was there when this all happened. USMC Taskforce Tarawa 1/2 B Co. 0331 (Machine Gunner)
While we were securing Al Nazariyah, an Army supply convoy somehow bypassed friendly lines and ended up deep in the city. They obviously were lost and decided to turn back. On their way back to friendly lines someone in the convoy spotted some uniformed locals waving white flags amongst a big group of civilians. Whoever the stupid fk it was that saw this thought it would be a good idea to try and snag some POWs and maybe get a shiny medal or ribbon to go along with the rest of the mess they've got. So the convoy stopped and lo and behold there were guys laying in ambush in the back somewhere. It's true that she just crawled up in a ball and never fired a shot because her weapon was too dirty because of the dirt and sand that accumulated during the 3 day journey it took to get to that position. While her bothers-in-arms around her were dying, she did nothing.
As we were assaulting through the city, we even got comms stating that, "Oh by the way, there are about 19 Army that's MIA in the area." My and my Marines just kind of looked at each other because we knew that there wasn't anyone else there but Marines at that time. 2 or 3 days later while we were setting up defensive positions in the city to possibly defend against a counter offensive, and Iraqi doctor (probably from that hospital) came up to a Marine in my company and told us about the 2 American girls that they have in the hospital. I was one of the 2 squads of Marines that were assembled to go get her. At that time we didn't know if we were going to see any opposition, but yeah... it being war and all. But before we punched out we were told to stand down because they were now waiting for Delta and SEALs to show up. Then they waited for the news cameras. Then they waited for the puke officers that wanted to go along so they can write themselves in for awards. I believe that we had waited for an additional 3-4 days until they got the freak show rolling. In the end there were several squads of us Marines that secured the outer cordon for this "rescue operation". There was no gunfire. There were maybe 1 or 2 flashbangs, concussion grenade or maybe even a breach charge.
In the end she got a Bronze Star for... what? There were a number of people involved in that rescue op that put themselves in for awards and medals and probably got them.

She was severally injured in the crash and was in no condition to fight. The severity of her injuries was the reason that her Iraqi doctor was so intent on getting her back to the US, as his hospital was low on supplies and he did not feel they could provide her with the care she required.

James Ruddy she was probably an officer most likely a paper shuffler and the only time she had never seen a firearm was during boot camp and when she had to qualify once a year at the range lot of people don't realize how many paper shufflers there are in the military

America has nothing to fear with women of such integrity and honour. The best of luck to her in her future life with her husband and family.

Doesn't matter the situation on the ground when the teams got there....she was a POW and was rescued. They did what was needed. Good work to all and Godspeed to them and all who serve.

I knew she wasn't a hero because "gun jamming" and running your vehicle into another is not the sign of someone who has their shit together.
