My son at one year old sat on his cake 😂😂
We thought we’d do that cake smash that always seems to give cute photos of kids shovelling handfuls of cake into their little mouths, but my son had zero interest in eating the cake and was more interested in sitting on the cake, turning the cake into a pillow, laying his belly on the cake, and poking all the decorative sugar flowers into holes on the cake.
(It was a cheap store bought sponge cake I decorated in buttercream, so the point was to let him do whatever he wanted and just capture the photos)

Clients like this are a mystery to me. Why are they so uncompromising? Are they trying to get a cake for free? That's what I'm always thinking about people who throw tantrums over things that don't really matter in the end. The client in the story got a nice cake that's more fitting of the size of her party. @@destyniiskywalker The thing is, in this scenario what she wanted was not physically possible. Being "super specific" can be a bad thing sometimes, because you can't always HAVE exactly what you want and you are bound to be disappointed in those cases. For example - you cannot have a tall, three layer, ten inch cake that only serves forty. That is not going to happen.
Where the baker went wrong here, as she already said, was by not EXPLAINING "Hey, this isn't actually how cake size works, I can't physically do this. Here's what I can do, which of these options do you prefer?". That is all she could have done differently. She was never going to be able to give the customer exactly what she wanted.

As a grocery store cake decorator: OMG people have NO IDEA what size cake they want. I have people come in all the time and point at a cake that says "1/4 sheet" right on the label and call it a "1/2 sheet." Or I'll make an order for a full sheet and when they come to pick it up say "That's way too big" and come to find out they thought our 1/2 sheets were called full sheets and the person taking the order didn't tell them a full sheet feeds 40-80 people. I've learned to just ask how many people are at the party and then point at those sizes in the case because otherwise people will just spout off the most random sizes and then be upset that the cake is the wrong size.

The many horror stories of moms having meltdowns over their kids cake. 😅 I remember one woman who chose a pink & purple flower design but told me to make it purple & orange. Told her it was a bold choice & wouldn’t look as good as the original. No issues when she picked it up but apparently I went to college with her friend who posted photos of the cake & party. I liked the post assuming their party was awesome but the mom recognized me & took it upon herself to comment all over our mutual friend’s post that the cake I made was the ugliest thing she ever ordered even though it was how she asked it to look. 😬 I had to block the mom cause she started harassing me online. 😒

You are not mean or snarky, you don't say this freakin B or anything of THAT nature when referring to somebody else's faults or mistakes.
But you don't pull your punches. Everyone has faults and everyone makes mistakes. When an adult makes mistake and they realize it or it's pointed out to them they apologize and fix it to the best of their ability. That's what adults do. And when somebody else makes a mistake or shows a fault, we should realize that everyone does it and have compassion. If compassion is not possible at least don't take them to task for such a human condition. And I have to admit that blue fondant on the cake looked beautiful!! Maybe they want a big one and would like to give some out or just keep and have the next day, or maybe the cake was special the way it was supposed to be for whatever reason and changing it would "lessen" what made it special. It’s very helpful if you to share these experiences to help others avoid problems we have, and that wouldn’t happen if you also avoided any accountability (because how would we know what to do or say differently, if you acted like you’re infallible)? Everyone is fallible, but it’s brave of you to share! It’s also very validating to know we’re not the only ones. Also - no small thing - learning how to order properly and communicate what we want!

o gosh i has an irate mom as well. sent photos, she loved it. came to fetch the cake. firstly i usually load the cakes into the customer's car myself but this lady just walked into my property and i found her at my front door. i wanted to be polite so i didnt make an issue of it. she followed me inside and watched me take the cake out of the fridge. still happy with her 2 tier buttercream cake with custom toppers. the next morning she berated me with calls telling me i ruined her daughters 1st birthday because the cake was falling apart. turns out she had left the cake out on her kitchen counter overnight in summer. buttercream doesnt like to be treated like this. the cake obviously melted. ive changed my way of doing collections because of this.

Sure enough wifey came home, pointed to a random spot and said "You need to fix this!" As I asked her what exactly she would like the husband came up behind her, touched his nose and winked at me. I twiddled my thumbs near that spot until she was happy. There was zero rhyme or reason to her.

Why should I, the person paying for a service, be forced to compromise with the person I paid to do the service when the person I paid de ides to arbitrarily change what I requested because it was "too much cake," and didn't inform me of this change until AFTER the cake was already made with no time to get it fixed or reordered. We all have that experience. As a seamstress I had a client do that early on. It was a circle skirt for a Disney event for her daughter (we lived in Orlando and Disney events were a big deal). The hem of the two sided, reversible skirt wasn’t perfect. So I took it home. She was yelling and crying. What will I do? I need that skirt! Would she pay me? No. Then she couldn’t have the skirt. I grew up a lot that day. My young daughter and sons used that skirt as a skirt and a cape for dress up for years. But I wasn’t giving it away. What she was going to do wasn’t my problem. It was hers.

I'm the mom who is like "i just want the big one i don't care if I'm feeding 6 and it's 110 servings, my mouth will be happy for many days!"
Ok so for real I usually do purchase the largest size though i don't have a custom cake person. My reasoning is it freezes well and it actually saves me money in not buying other desserts or sweets. We do the celebration with candles etc then we all have a serving, we leave a little out bc i have teens who magically eat in the night like mice, and i cut and place the rest into like family size containers, and freeze. It works for us and that way when my brother comes for dinner on the weekends, I've got a dessert if he wants and if he doesn't more for the rest of us! That said, if everyone's birthdays are close together like we have quite a few cake events in spring with mother's Day, two birthdays and fathers day, so we just get sizes we need... But i do love to buy in "bulk". A deep freezer and good quality containers are such a blessing when you're on a tight budget! 🤗
