West Coast 2: She Awakes for a BAD Landing

- Jaime fell asleep in the back somewhere over Iowa or Missouri and missed a lot of rural America. Eastern Kansas looks like the worlds biggest cow pasture with all the rolling grasslands. Western Kansas and Oklahoma is barren and brown.
Time for a fuel stop in smelly Dalhart, TX. I came in high/fast with a high density altitude and a (unknown at the time) quartering tailwind...all that made for a pretty bad landing!

These videos always make me want to purchase a multi engine but good lord the thought of overhauling two engines spikes my heart rate.
Its definitely more expensive. Just your annual is more fuel bern and every thing is more.
You typically don’t do both at the same time, if that helps.
Like everyone says, what is your mission. What is your useful load needed. Will your wife fly in a single. My mission, my load and my wife say a twin is the way to go.
Why I rent lol
At landing, Jaime smelled the Dalhart economy! They have a dozen or more cattle feedlots with over 100,000 head each. Lots of methane! Nice trip! Hope you note the volcano and the crater on your way to GC.
I've said it before, toughest landings are always after long cross country flights! Not sure why, maybe too many hours in one spot. Looking forward to the rest of this trip.
I have lived in the Texas Panhandle my entire life. That smell is the smell of money around here! Dalhart hosted an air show last year and I had the opportunity to sit in on the pilot briefing with the F-18 and A-10 pilots who were going to fly in the show. I have never felt less qualified to be in a room! Love the channel!
Its been incredible flying with you these last few years. I hope there is another plane in your future and the adventure will continue. Safe travels!
Kevin, this is so great !!! I have only seen that area from airliner altitudes a couple times and anxious to fly over it myself and have thought the same about why the sectional turns brown. Surface of the moon loved it !!! Jamie ... our daughter describes that seat and nappability !!! in our 310 !!
great great video again, thanks for sharing. Take Care
Nice to see you guys back in the air and channel. Always fun videos with you two!!
Thanks for taking us along on your trip.
I'm really glad to find more of your videos posted! I've wondered what you all had planned after learning you were selling 1BC. Thought maybe keeping up with work, kids, and all the extra work doing videos might have overwhelmed you yo where you need a break from it all.
I've always loved watching your videos you're both a very nice young couple that I think highly of so I hope to see more videos even maybe in a new plane or jet even in the future!!!
I got a kick out of how you kept busy and focused while sleeping beauty was napping in the back!
I think it actually helps having the video Cams going. You know we'll all be watching and it keeps us into the video and your talking to "us" helps you keep from getting too bored!
I'm not a pilot. Just an old guy that enjoys flying and dreamed of becoming a pilot but never happened for me but I love watching you two enjoy yourselvrs!!yourselves!!! Best wishes to you both!!!
Can’t wait to hear about your takeoff with such a high density altitude. Such things might be briefed before landing, to make them present in your mind… great to see the cross country banter. Enjoyed it muchly.
Not a big issue for the 310 for take off. I operate a 310P(normally aspirated) out of a 5300ft altitude strip and summer temps of 30 plus degrees celcius I see DA of around 8300ft. Even heavy I am normally airborne around 3000ft down the rwy
Thank you for the video. Hope the family and you are doing well. I've only traveled by vehicle out west, lovely but boring at times. Got tired of counting antelopes after a bit. Take care - Be safe
As always Kevin and Jamie thank you for sharing.
3 hour nap is called beauty sleep, not that Jamie needs it! Looking forward when you get to see the West coast. Thanks for the video!
Nice to see you up on channel again! Dalhart has some of the largest feedlots in the world hence the stench.
This trip looks amazing! Can’t wait for the rest of it. 🙂
Thanks for sharing guys! Sure do love your videos!
Loved seeing the Green Patch and thanks for explaining your landing! You were not alone, we were with you! Thought i would see you at the Chapter meeting last Thursday, Al Shackleton gave a great history of KARR and 25 years as President! Great turnout at Hangar 134! We just got the award for 19,000 Young Eagles Flown by a Chapter!
You both Rock!!! Very cool, it's yours to explore. Always be who you are. Fabulous times and expertise Onward!!
Couldn't sleep and revisited the channel. It was fun to watch your interactions again. Seeing her in the back sleeping under the blanket made me laugh. You could have been traveling to get rid of a body. 😁 Hope all is well for you.
Nice video. You can also see the change driving thru that area.
Missed you guys, that i started watch all your videos from the start again 😊
You're getting close to my neighborhood. Hope you fly over Kingman, AZ. They have a pretty decent airport. Thanks for sharing your flight. I was at the GC about 4 days ago and the weather is perfect this time of the year.
Good video Kevin and Jaime
Wish I would have known you all were stopping in Dalhart, I could’ve flown up from AMA to meet you and teach you how to pronounce Dalhart correctly - LOL
Yes - Jaime it is the Texas Panhandle, Okla’s is just little. You have to remember everything is bigger in Texas
And yes I had to bust on both of you
Thanks for the video and looking forward to next one
Good luck guys enjoy your trip.
Hope everything is working out for u.
Sounds like a good time.
Love and miss the 310R!! Flew it 5-7 hours a night out of Omaha withAirNet Systems. I’d fly it anywhere in any weather, thanks for the videos!
You flew south of our farm about 60-70 miles in western KS. Around GCK. Dryland farming for the most part, and many feedlots. It's hot, dry, and windy out here. Avg rainfall in the 18-22" range. Easy to find a spot to land if engine goes out, lol. Best place to learn how to land w/x-winds. Be safe.
Awesome flight
At first I thought the camera was on FF for that landing! LOL The green/brown line was interesting! Thanks, be safe! --gary
IKR?! I kinda leaned back away from the screen to slow down! 😂 I guess 5800ft density altitude and a quartering tailwind will make your ground speed pretty high!!
Can't wait for installment #3
As they say: any Landing you walkaway from is a good one. LOL! Don't be so hard on yourself. Can't wait to see what is next.
Thanks for sharing
I live in Atlanta, but I grew up in StL and I used to laugh that, driving to/from Chicago from StL is like you're in a Flinstone cartoon where the same silo keeps going by...
I've drove through Kansas 6 times going to my Brother's home in Denver Colo. I can tell you .that is a long drive through Kansas . The whole state is mostly wheat land .Lot of farms .Hot ,and dry most of the time except in winter. Then it's cold as hell..... Feels like you're in the middle of no where. If you ever get to fly over the bad lands in South Dakota, now that looks like the moon scape. Safe travels Y'all..........
I fly commercial from Michigan to Mesa AZ. often. I always like seeing the line where it turns brown. It's great to fly out to AZ.
Lots of oil wells in Kansas and especially the southwest part. Dalhart is cattle country and feedlots.
Love Y’all’s videos!
Cdyd
Look at those props, just purring along. Sweet.
Loving the adventure thanks for bringing us along with you guys! Blessings to you and your family.

Why do trolls always seem to find my comments? 👍😆
@@kevincollins8014 Because you ended your comment with dumb, self serving BULL5HIT. Are we clear?
Drove thru Armuchee the other day and it was raining there. Didn't see a Grand Canyon but did see a gully that was flowing.
11:20. Only an old boy from the South (like Kevin) would know it…
🎶”We’ve got a long way to go, and a short time to get there, I’m east bound just watch old bandit run!”🎶
Jerry Reed would be proud. RIP, Jerry. Miss you.
Hey Kevin and Jamie... as my 30K ATP Rated Dad used to say, "If You walked away it was a GOOD One" ';-) Thanks for the ride into the Brown Zone!
You two are the best. I hope there are post-aircraft CZcams video’s in your future.
Interesting flight to say the least! Beautiful scenery! Thanks for bringing us along!
Great video.
You've probably had worse landings than that so no big deal i reckon. Thanks for posting Kevin & Jamie
Been to Dalhart, TX many times, going from Phoenix to Kansas City, Missouri, hwy 54 through Wichita
Jamie I think I saw you at Target today but couldn't react fast enough to recognize and say hi. boy you walk fast lol
Geez Kevin! We need to get you back in the sim for some touch n gos practice!!!
I found that even 5500' of altitude would affect my O2 levels, that plus 4 hours of flying can be very fatiguing, all considered great landing, missed you guys at RR, understand that work has had you very busy, hang in there.
Hello from SW Kansas. Garden City to be exact. The only towered airport in this area.
G,day Kevin and Jamie from Sydney Australia.
You've got me wanting explanation of "quarterly tailwind" (obviously the wind is blowing from behind the plane) although: quarterly tailwind.
And;
Field elevation (my answer) terrain height above sea level, measurements noted on sectional charts?
Always happy to find 310 pilot content.
🌏🇦🇺
Welcome to Texas . More than likely the smell you mentioned is Ribeye and Sirloin steaks in the making . Probably catching the aroma of nearby feedlot.
Great video as always guys 👍
Quick question, do you have any night flying videos? I bet it's lovely to fly at night with all the lights and when the instruments are all lit up 😀
I loved your video with the tower light gun signals and seeing you land with all the runway lights and surroundings all lit up 😀
That was a great landing. You can still reuse the aircraft. Welcome to Texas. I grew up in that area, but you are at 3 hours flight from me in Houston.
Where did you grow up? I am originally from Perryton. We have farmland in Oklahoma just North of Bryans Corner.
I was in the small town of Denver City. Left there in 1977.
Ah, yes. Even though I'm from northern Indiana, I absolutely love the American southwest! I've made many trips to Texas, Arizona and Utah. My favorite part of the country!
Welcome to west coast brother
Try Dumas, Tx next time (just a bit to the southeast).....great BBQ joint at the airport!
Jamie is so cute , you guys have fun.
I heard you guys mention once Mount Rushmore and Sturgis you should really go see it I was there in 2004 it is awesome.
I loved the "Walter White" and "Amarillo by Morning" references from Jamie.
I've seen it all now! A mirror on an aircraft sun visor.
She's never seen the surface of the moon... LOL! That was funny.
😂😂😂
Smells like money in Dalhart!!
Yeah, high elevation Kevin 😀 The picture with that GS is just playing mindgames. I operate from 7.630 feet…I get ya’. Will one of you be on ORD App freq on June 4’th around 7am ?
I was at Painted Desert and Grand Canyon last year
Never get sick of the Pano... and agreed with others on here. It is pretty tough to grease it on after those long x countries. Who knows.
Welcome to Dalhart!
Jaime: "It is very stinky here"
Lots of cows…Welcome to Texas! As the man says, “Smells like money!”
Wait till you reach AZ/NV area, rock and brown every where! No section lines to judge heading direction at all!
If someone in Texas wants to borrow an "ink pin" that's a pen, as in ball point. Hot asphalt in the Southwest, middle of the day, can cause a lot of float.
doing my flight training in Utah at 5600 feet the DAs are thin in the summer it can be rough
I flew through a pretty good shower the other day to wash the plane. I could see thru the shower to the other side, but when I got into it, it was IFR. Wasn't for too long. The plane was clean, though.
Rather tense conversation on this one.
I live and lfy in Denver. Density altitude affects performance. If you can master control at high altitude airports, you'll grease your landings in the flat lands. If your experience is all flatland, there's adjustments that need to be made with higher elevations. Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing!!!!
Friends flew the Painted Dessert at 500' ago in their 182.
Even great pilots can have a bad one........:)
Cheers,
Rik
Being from California, I had the opposite happen when I flew to Texas. Suddenly, everything was Green!
Kevin seemed like he needed a nap after Jaime got up.
Amazing how many windmills are in western Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Hi it's philip hope you are both well.brilliant vlog long flight but you are down and enjoying life once again take care and happy flying to you both phil.
As someone who flies in co and kansas it is common in to lose radio contact that low
Hi Kevin, Hi Jaime, I hope that you are doing well. Nice to see that y'all are into "recycling"...
It's all relative...65 MPH on the ground...are we there yet? 200 MPH in the air...are we there yet. The air gets you a whole lot further though. Haha! Not perfect landing? Very safe landing. That's what counts.
The panhandle of Texas is at the top (north). Welcome to the west!
It always amuses me when someone flies in the west for the first time. Rising terrain? What’s that? 😂
Love taking the trip with you guys. I noticed a gauge twitching at 12:22 over on the right.... whats that about??
Good spot. That's the Engine #2 cylinder head temperature gauge. Bouncing around like that it's probably just a sender or wire that's cutting out.
Normal stuff Bro, good job.
I learned out of Tulsa Intl. Kansas was the practice area. Nothing but cows.
Dalhart does have some interesting smells, doesn't it? They create their own weather there with all that methane. They used to have a cute little diner there..... if the smell didn't make it impossible for you to eat anything....
Nice to know the pro's can screw the pooch occasionally too. - Lauren
That's a mistake that cannot happen if you don't let the dog sleep in bed with you. ;-)
Lots of cows in dalhart. Clothes pins for everyone because of the smell
"surface of the moon" hahaha
sounds so much like our "Western Trip" except we were on the ground in a Durango. We stayed over night in Amarillo our son and I were going to have Rattle Snake, the waiter said. "If you want your dinner to be for experiencing eating a snake, go for it. But you certainly are going to be disappointed" We passed and had a steak.
I've had rattlesnake, it's not bad. Sort of like reptilian chicken.
Might have not been your best landing but you both are safe and the plane is safe
i'll have to remember that one... "it wasnt a bad landing, we just involuntarily took back off"
coming in hot kev
So Kevin where is your Championship swag my friend! Let’s go for two in a row this year
People that live in the west call it "Lush Brown"
CZcams has been filling my feeds with a ton of other crap. And I've always been real good about seeing your content. But take no chances, you've been "Belled"!
Kevin...Ive always wanted to ask you this. Since you and Jaime are both controllers why do you always fly VFR with flight following instead of IFR?
He mentions that in one of his earlier videos, I believe. You'll have to go re-watch them! LOL...
