  • 1996 Chicago Cubs vs San Diego Padres Opening Day Full Game - Apr 1 Sandberg 1st game back after returning from retirement. WGN broadcast with Harry Caray, Steve Stone and Wayne Larrivee doing the announcing.
    At the end of the Cubs game there are some Sportscenter highlights for that day including the on field death of umpire John McSherry. After the Sportscenter clip is the "One Shining Moment" for the 1996 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship that also happened on April 1, 1996.

    Thank you for this. It's crazy that despite how old Harry got, he never lost it. I remember Pat Summerall sounding completely lost in his last year, but Harry always had it. We only had him for 22 more months after this game.

    I remember this day. I was so exited for the opener that year & it didn’t disappoint. Mark Grace was my favorite player for years & this was an amazing way to start that season.
    I moved into the city a few weeks later & caught quite a few games in 1996. It seems like yesterday and 100-years ago at the same-time.

    What a season. It came down to the last day of the reg. season with the Pads and Dodgers tied with 90 wins and those two happened to be playing that day. It was 0-0 in extra innings when Chris Gwynn won the game with a huge pinch hit.

    Ryne Sandberg is my favorite baseball player when I was a kid played second baseman in Gering Organized Baseball and that was in Gering,Nebraska.
