►WE USE THIS SOUND RECORDER (AMAZON) - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/425k5rG
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/3WEuz0k
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv

What do you think about this one?
Being a “bad” student, teaching what you need/want to learn… What he says is brilliant!
I think I should thank you. I have no social media presence and I am alone, a newbie at script writing. I come to @filmcourage to have answered, questions I do not think to ask.
Thank you
He had me at "the process of making a story is really about marrying the wildness of your imagination to the rigour of story structure." This has just recently started coming together for me.
This guy gets it
I love this guy! I'm big on surrender in y own life myself. More of Alan Watt please!
Alan Watt is quickly becoming one of my favorite interviews.
Much more to come! And here is our previous interview with Al - czcams.com/video/tBR5BCLkHDE/video.html
THANK YOU! Much appreciated! @@filmcourage
I so much agree! He nails it nearly every time. It’s obvious that he is a great teacher. He not only knows the art but how to communicate the art. I’m new to this, learning everyday, and these interviews are helping me build a firm foundation. Thanks Film Courage and Alan Watt!
I think whatever you write or make will be judged and there will always be some that love it and some that hate it.
Notice this so much in film & tv the past few years. Characters making choices that feel unnatural to their established mannerisms just for the story to reach a desired plot point. It can really take you out from enjoying the film/show
Reminds me of that brilliant, brilliant clip from walk the line, the Johnny cash movie where he plays that same old religious crap for the executive and he says, we’ve heard that song. He says if you were lying in a ditch dying and had one song, just one song to sing, to sum up how you felt about this life, you’re telling me that’s what you’d sing? It ain’t about believing in god it’s about believing in yourself. Because that’s the only song that truly saves people.
It’s such a beautiful and motivating scene I rewatch it from time to time.
I think getting "stuck" is your subconscious telling you you have either made a mistake in prose you have already written, or prose you are planning to write. This is a mistake only a human reader is going to notice. Where did John get the letter opener from to kill the bad guy? Should this scene come after that scene? That kind of stuff.
Now this is an interview worth hearing and watching. 👏🏾
"We are the channel..."
Really appreciate the humility of this.
Also - "Surrender to the process."
Likewise. This is how I write! Before I start I always pray and I ask to be used by my Creator as a conduit for His creativity.
@@sethflix What a great idea! Crazy I never thought to do that. Will make that part of my pencil-sharpening ritual. Aloha
More Alan Watt, please. 🤩
Much more to come! And here is our previous interview with Al - czcams.com/video/tBR5BCLkHDE/video.html
After all the videos on Buddhism I've seen from this guy, this is exactly what I'd expect him to say about creativity. 😉
😂😂😂
@blackjakibwt3305 Your reply came at the perfect time. Rewatching that video was just what I needed. Thanks. 👍
"If you ever have to choose between the aliveness of your characters or your idea of your story structure, always choose the aliveness of your characters because it’s going to lead you to the truth of your story structure, not your idea (of structure)" This is a great observation. Thank you for making this video. The first five minutes are some of the best content Film Courage has created about the emerging screenwriter's mindset.
This is an extremely important lesson to learn. It's only AFTER you let go of the world telling you to succeed, to make something fake that will be popular, that you find your true audience AND your own voice.
Well said. Real creation only comes after you fully embrace who you are and what you truly want to express. Faking is a form of forcing, and your audience will tell you are pushing hard, and in that way, the things you create will only make people feel exhausted.
Brilliant interview!!!
Being brave, having the pure guts to show your own soul - Thank you Alan for that lightbulb moment.
🙏
Watched two of his videos. It's freaking me out. This dude's strumming my pain with his fingers.
Ken Atchity, Glenn Gers, Corey Mandell and Alan Watt (and Steven Pressfield) are all on the same page here; separate the creative process from the results [your expectations and fears]. It's not up to the writer to judge their own work, and doing so will only make the process more challenging and less fun. The artist has to have the curiosity and freedom to express ideas, experiment and grow as a creator. And then the judgment to utilise that that in the most effective way by employing craft.
What he says about focusing on the character and letting that guide the structure the kind of story it turns out to be proves what Corey Mandell says about “intuitive writers” is wrong.
😍..'you've got to be a bad student"...."the PURPOSE of STORY is to reveal a TRANSFORMATION"..."surrender to the PROCESS, bring your passion but also bring your craft and LET GO OF THE RESULTS!!!"... he types to himself every day 😅😅😅. The combination of Alan Watt's writer training 'principles' combined with Eric Edson's Hero Goal Sequence (my story is A1-6▶A2a-6_A2b-6▶A3-3 for a total of 21 HGS's) and Kurt Vonnegut 'Shapes of Stories' has brought it all together for me. I can now envision my story, beginning to end, where as before it was all a jumbled rant in my mind for too many years. Working on 2nd iteration, and discipline of regular writing - let it floooooowww baby! (revise AFTER) 😆...
Societies structure hinders creativity. Not only does Interruption express conflict, it's more interesting than the soul mannerism of politeness (waiting your turn to speak). Interestingly mannerism is also categories as rude and surprisingly boredom. Mannerism is a twisted word to explore, which is endure conflict in itself. Also 'getting stuck' in politeness wouldn't make a smile cry, although there is deeper truth.
Beautiful. Great interview.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am a panster. My greatest fear is that my characters figure out what I have in store for them before I can get them there.
They say screen writing is hard and you get rejected a lot. Not me! Everything I write gets a passing grade!
Cs get degrees, man 😂
Writing is like any art form. You have to make a mess first.
😮💛
