Thanks for putting in the work. I always appreciate how thoroughly you go through everything.
Nice to see an acrylic colour shift paint. Thanks for the review!
Great set of paint. Ordering one this week.
BR, thanks for doin all these tests', I'll surely save up to try these paints for sure! Again, Thanks tons!
Nice colors! Thanks for another great review.
Fantastic video awesome review, Thank you very much for sharing and please keep em coming. Everyone keep yourselves and love ones safe and healthy and remember to SMILE.
I've used these. And for a acrylic, they turned out beautifully
Color shift with an affordable price and epic results, I can picture a color changing Sazabi!! Thanks Rex love all the help and advice, care care buddy
Does colors look good, and the best part is they are acrylics loved. Thank you for the paint review.
Great review. Those paint spray out beautiful.
Those are some really neat looking paints.
Aww! Thanks for such a nice review and test! 😊❤We really hope you enjoy these colors on your models!
You're welcome. Would you consider sending out other paints for me to test? The Liquid and the Metal Colors are on my list for testing 👍
I freakin love the color shift vids!!!!! thank you so much!! almost got those paints today...but I wanted to see this first...im get em today lol!! oooo gold chrome..ok..im ready for that!!!
Very nice video once again. You can also use these shifters over darker metals (gunmetal, ...). The effect will be more subtle.
You can combine multiple shifters over each other for even more special effects.
Very cool colours! I’d like to see them on a car body. Thanks for sharing. Happy days and model on! 😎🇨🇦
these paints have been on my list for awhile and now i get to see them before buying them.....thanks @barbatos rex
Never tried color shifting paints but maybe I will now great video
I'm going through the color shift videos and now I want some!
Same great content and about the right length.
Very nice effect on these.
These look pretty interesting. Might have to pick some up myself. As an aside, I have the 2 gallon Fortress quiet compressor. It's an absolute beast, approx 1min 40sec to fill from empty and recovery takes 15sec. Both of those numbers are less than my basic tanked airbrush compressor.
Great review as always, just ordered these to do a 1/6 iron man stealth figure, many thanks.
Project turned out great, set cost £14 on ebay, so easy to use undiluted with 0.3mm needle easy clean up. thanks for reviewing these
The color shift over white are nice and subtle and look like a great alternative to the polytranspar paints used for the paneling on the Star Trek Enterprise Refit. I’m very curious how the color shift holds up with a clearcoat over them. Also I have that Fortress air compressor from Harbor Freight and it is awesome!
Had a couple of these I had tested over metallics, and clearly that was the wrong way to go about it! Going to have to give them another shot soon :)
Easily my favorite color shifts, Vallejo has really quality product.
I sprayed a MG Kampfer in Electric Blue Intense Violet and it looks incredible. These are some fantastic paints.👍🤟
I repainted the blue in Helios with that color. My favorite so far
Was curious because Vallejo is my primary spray brand. But holy mother of paints is this pretty!
Gotta get me some for later builds. Thanks for showing this off!
Edit: I recon you could do over white for a nice pearlescent effect. I recon that would look really pretty!
I just used the space dust (electric blue/violet) on Gundam Helios and it looks beautiful
Hey Rex. I have all three sets. I'm currently using four different ones to create the aztec look on my Enterprise-E. Some show really well on the light/medium/dark grays that I'm using as base coats on various portions of the enterprise. My favorites are .004, .009, and .018. My next model (1976 Dodge Dart Sport) will be using the Turquoise (.009). Thanks and have a great day.
I'd love to see that
They look awsome, thanks for testing them. Thanks to you I know I probably won't buy the whole pack since half of them look too similar for me, I'll take that nice deep turquoise/violet and the dark green/tin that looks like a beetle!
Very nice color shifts. Hoping you can set up that compressor for standard airbrushing(fittings used).
Well done my freind, well done!
Excited to watch this video. I've had this box sitting on the shelf waiting for a 144 nightingale build my wife wants to do with me.
I'm curious to know if you'd recommend putting a gloss clear coat over them to protect the paint. I'm not sure if a clear coat would diminish or enhance the look of the color shift effect.
@@terranfernandez you should definitely gloss coat. The shinier the better!
Alclad Aqua gloss works nicely to protect metallics. It's water based and doesn't dull the metallic layer
@@terranfernandez you can Gloss coat these no problem. They look great
Color shifts always look so pretty I just have trouble thinking of a kit to use it on.
YO!!! Thanks bro! U help alot and shit! Your right. Thanks for the advice I'll share ur you tube on my Facebook. Thank you. Don't stop and keep on building.
Differently awesome cloors
Cant wait for the gsw testings
Awesome work once again buddy , love your stuff. How does the colour shift perform on surfaces that are not smooth ?
These galaxy ones are beautiful. Idk what I'd use it in but it'd be nice to have the option
Excellent review my friend looks to be some interesting colours, if they had the correct colour could they be used for the periscope lenses on armourec vehicle?
That 018 looks more like dark green/copper to me, but hey I'm only a metallurgical so what would I know? Great video again Robert. I always pick up something about technique, equipment or the paints themselves. Problem is I keep on having to buy more stuff, be it paint or tools 😮Thanks again...
I primarily shoot Vallejo paints because of the ease of use and the results are awesome. Do not use water to thin! Use their Airbrush Thinner and/or Flow Improver. Thinning with water or alcohol will give you less than optimal results. I have not used any of the color shifts paints, yet. I have used their Model Air and Model colors. Clean up is a breeze!
Using their thinner is a must 👍 you are correct
They look good. I have a few from Green Stuff World and then a bunch from TurboDork. I haven't really found any of them to be bad.
Im a big fan of vallejo paints. Never tried the color shift paints, nice vid. But then the end of the vid , digital pressure gauge!! Very cool, I may have to grab one.
What’s the trick for vallejo paints I’ve been trying model air and model color I’m using an Iwata esclipes hp-cs at 20-25 lbs the primer I use Paasche h at 25 psi for primer any advice is appreciated
@@jerrycarnesjr6440 Thinning is everything. .35 is a pretty decent size needle. I spray Vallejo through a .18. Its all about thinning. I usually use the vallejo thinner and a bit of the flow improver. It really needs to look like milk. It all depends on what you are painting, how close or far away you are, how heavy or light you are trying to lay down the layer. But at the end of the day for me the trick with vallejo has always been thinning and a little flow improver. A little of that paint goes a long way.
@@screwf4ce1 can you help me figure out how much paint does it usually take to paint a 1/24-1/25 car body I’m trying to get used to acrylic paints health issues I had to stop using enamels and lacquers I use both model color and model air and game colors too also would like to use createx wicked colors but they seem like too hard to mix I want to explore all option while still enjoying modeling since I had to switch paints it not much fun been on same model over a year testers model master used to be my paint of choice I could do three kits a month now in a rut can’t find anyone to help the transition smoother plus a lot has to do with psi my Iwata says 25-30 but doesn’t seem to flow good especially Vallejo primers thanks for any more advice you can offer sorry this was so long
@@jerrycarnesjr6440 That's a tall order but I know you will get there. First off with Vallejo primer I typically shoot around 20 - 23 PSI but I never use it directly out of the bottle. I still use a little thinner and flow improver. I do not do ratios or measuring, I always mix directly in the cup. Here is what I always do first, I drop a few drops of flow improver into the cup before anything else. then I spray just flow improver through the brush just for a quick second, I do not spray it all out, just one second. For me this just helps to get things all set up and ready to spray. Then I add a few drops of thinner, still no paint at this point. Then I will drop in a few drops of the paint that I want. I have an old paint brush that I use just for mixing, I mix it up right in the air brush cup... I check the consistency, if its kind of like milk then I will spray a little bit on a sheet to see if it sprays ok. I never put paint directly in the cup without first adding thinner and flow improver then mix. If you do this enough you will not need to worry about measuring, everything will be done by sight and testing. It sounds like a process but its really very fast. I have noticed, like in many of Rex's vids, you want to do layers, lay down thin at first then build up. Again sounds like its tedious but its really not. Getting to know how to thin properly was the biggest first step for me, after than other things kind of fell into place over time.
@@jerrycarnesjr6440 Also, I live in Japan so there is Tamiya paint easily available to me here. That is the paint I first started with. I used Rex's video about how to thin a whole pot of tamiya paint with Mr.Hobby Leveling Thinner. Its a no brainer, so simple and then the whole pot is ready for the air brush. I found that Tamiya paint when using Rex's thinning method just makes it so easy and very forgiving with an airbrush. If you are doing auto or aircraft I can certainly recommend trying the tamiya method as well.
these look MUCH better than Turbo Dork that is for sure! all the T D I used are supposed to be colot shift but they are just plain metallic colors.
We’re so spoiled with all these amazing reviews
I'm here to spoil you
@@barbatosrex9473 haha incredible you do a grand job I must say, I can’t wait for the next… take care my friend
Great video! Do you ever layer different colors of the shifters?
I like Vallejo and especially their pre thinned stuff but I have a bunch of the regular non thinned paint and sometimes I have a little trouble finding the right ratio but I haven't ever used the flow improver till recently and I tell ya what,it was like a totally different paint, this whole time that was what I was missing, but yeah, I've always liked how Vallejo lays down, it's a really good paint in my opinion
I usually thin 50/50 paint thinner in a 0.5 airbrush and add a few drops of flow improver, I also like to put 2 drops of flow improver in the airbrush and spray it through just to lubricate the needle before adding the paint mix.
I need me some of these paints for my 3d printed model kits I’m printing 👌😎
Please be careful if ordering off EBAY, my order never arrived! I'm housebound so I have to order from the internet. Thank you for a great video, I can see myself visiting this video quite a few times because my memory isn't what it used to be lol.
I totally agree with you, these colours deserve such better names! They must make Peacocks envious. You don't need a thick layer to gain the shift so the bottles last for age's.
What are they like on a mirror or chrome base?
That purple-blue one has my attention. Putting that on a more rounded gunpla kit. Maybe the Sazabi?
For sure, that would look great
How does watching your vid during a Rod Zombie concert count to dedication.... well it's between sets sooo....🤣
Nice! 👍👍👍
These colors look epic, what top coat do you think would make these colors look even more epic? Or do you think the Vallejo mecha gloss varnish is good enough?
Completely agree with you on the crazy name style of naming haha think I've got 4 emerald greens and all 4 are different shades of emerald green, love the turbo dork names they're pretty descriptive with their paints
The best way I have found to make gold chrome is with GSW’s mirror chrome then covering it with a 50/50 mix of Tamiya clear orange and clear yellow.
I use Vallejo Liquid Gold, it’s pretty nice but it looses it’s luster after a while especially if handled and requires a metallic varnish.
Paints like these really demand to be filmed in 4K, hard to see the flakes in 1080p, but from what I can see they look pretty decent compared to other acrylic color shifts I've used.
Thank you for your review! I heard from another reviewer to use glossy black primer for better results. But what is your preference for priming these colors?
Thanks for the review. Presumably, these are best with a gloss clear coat for protection--will any clear coat work, or are they finicky like some metallics and need special care?
Zup bro, thanks for the video
i always buy sets to all so do the effects on models thnks to the sets i can do that
Are those Gundam stickers? That’s so rad.
Edit #1: you should overlap The two colors in the plate to see what effect it has.
16:24 TY TY TY for this bit of information i could never find out what sizes of the needles matched with which color tip. i love my badger but i hate the marking system on the packaging like general purpose, detail and extreme detail tip cause it feels like its telling me nothing.
love the reviews btw
Yeah it's been a problem with Badger. I will probably do a video on the needle sizes to help others with the same problem
What kind of black paint are you using for a base? And Is it semi gloss or more of a flat base?... beautiful by the way...thanks I appreciate your videos they're very helpful
It likes luftwaffe green too...
Крутой обзор, спасибо !
If you were to top coat in a matt would the shift effect still work?
Thanks
You're welcome 👍
Barb, what set of nippers are those usagundamstore ones? I can't find them in thier website.
Can you tell me is any color shift paint other than acrylic? Something with solvent for automotive use that can be cleared. Thank you.
Hey great video and those pants look nice. Can you do a quick breakdown of the airbrush needle sizes and your recommendations for various kinds of paint with each size? Or maybe you did that on an older video. Either way, I'd like to know
I'm working on doing something like that.
Wonder what it would do over a chrome or metallic.
Can you topcoat these with a lacquer clear?
out of all the colour shift paints which do u think is the best
I was gonna comment that mine never seams to shift, then I had an epiphany. I used a different light source. It works! Totally doesn't work under this bright led.
Coming in to this really late but this is the definitive way to do 40k Power swords...it's literally talent in a bottle
These a great paints for sure. Thanks for watching
Have you done a video on the camillion colorshift paints from greenstuffworld? Sorry, got my answer at the end of the video🤣
You should put some 2k clear over these. That would make the POP like crazy!
I just tested 2K on a bunch of different paints. It can't be beat
I've been chasing around for colour shifts and metallics for my car builds and never thought of these Acrylics. They certainly look easy to apply and looks like a really nice finish. Can the Vallejo AB flow improver also be used with Tamiya, Mr colour etc hybrid acrylics Robert
Thanks for adding to my knowledge base with another great vid.
I haven't tested that yet, I use Tamiya retarder with Tamiya which is like a flow improver
Which color shift paints do you prefer?
I hope i wont screw it too much using it by brush, i want to use them as basing for my AL in 40k, making obsidian glass dessert look with cobalt blue
Pretty nice video and very beautiful colors. Could you tell me what is your air compressor(brand and model)? Thanks
This is my compressor, been using it for years every day. Still works flawlessly, best piece of equipment you can buy
amzn.to/3YSzrQs
Whoever said "watching paint dry" is boring never watched this channel! :D After seeing the video I'll probably going to pick this set, as for $20ish is a great price for 6 beautiful paints of high quality.
I'm not the biggest Vallejo fan but these are really good paints
@@barbatosrex9473 I'm just getting into airbrushing and from what I was able to get from multiple sources Vallejo seems to be good bang for your buck, reasonably priced, decent quality option with a wide pallet of colors to choose from. And what is also important to me, I can get them with fairly cheap shipping as where I live there are no local sources for good quality paint brands, and literally no options for airbrush paints, so I need to order everything internationally. :)
is it possible to mix a color like
only have Black and orange which then behave like a chameleon
Enjoy your videos and are very helpful. I had a question. I am building my first model. It is a Tamiya F-14D 1/48. I had to buy everything from scratch, so watching your videos put me in the right direction. So, I bought most of the recommended paints from the kit. When I want to do other models what is a good paint set to get? I know there are very specific paint sets ( planes, ships, military) I was wondering what (if there is such a thing) would be the best universal paint set to buy? Thanks. Keep up the great work.
There's not really a set that would cover it all. Vallejo has small sets that are specific to the build, like US modern aircraft or say German tanks. I would go with Mr Color or Tamiya individual jars. Mr Color can be bought for $2.50 a jar so you can get many to start off with at around $30
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks so much.
I use these mostly for brush painting. I did a really cool effect on the snakes on Medusa's head with the dark green tin over brown. They look really realistic. You can watch the video on my channel to see how it came out. I have all three sets and love these paints!!!
How is it brush painting them, could I use it on gunpla?
@@blazinkid5178 absolutely amazing to brush! You can build the color shift as much as you want. It's so cool because like a candy paint, you can change the depth of the color by using a darker or lighter or even a different base color. Just try it out. I think you'll love it. I have all the sets lol.
Another excellent video as always. I have the “Magic Dust” set of these paints but haven’t used them yet, the SMS color shift lacquers you did the other day makes me REALLY want to try those, so here’s my question: maybe it’s the camera or something but these Vallejo shifters don’t look like as smooth a finish as the SMS ones. Do you find that the case? Thanks for your site, airbrushing and paints are my favorite things in the hobby!
The SMS is the better paint. I always lean towards solvent based paints above acrylics. Your eyes do not deceive you, the SMS is better
@@barbatosrex9473 thanks, now that I have a spray booth I’m pretty much going lacquer all the way for airbrush
I love these colors but I just don't know what I would use them on.
You know i have think eversince gundam marker made their airbrush to be used with markers. I was expection gsi creos or tamiya or some other person to make a marker and tank combo airbrush or a cheap plastic or something similar airbrush with a small compressor to paint pladt8c models in markets easy but its still all metal and airbrushing is still kinda pricy i m trying to find a decent budget aircompressor which is hard in this country as air cans are not shipped.
sweet I’m picking up the set hobby lobby sells! Question… I have two big bottles of mr hobby leveling thinner and I was wondering if that can be used for acrylics?? Or is it best to stick to acrylic thinner or flow improver for acrylics? Thanks BR!
Vallejo paints are only able to be thinned with their own brand thinners or distilled water. If you want an acrylic that can thin with MLT, you'll want Tamiya or Mr. Hobby Aqueous.
"they do a lot of greens", i'm gonna wadger that's one part our eye's sensitivity to green, and the other part green's nearly central position in the visible spectrum. The shifting is an angular phenomenon, and so there's only so far you can shift in one paint, or rather, it might be a tradeoff between range and spread. Point is, there's a limit to the amount of shifting you can achieve in a certain area imposed by the available view angles etc. So green provides a good bookend to either shift towards a cooler or warmer hue, while probably allowing the mix to carry more of the pigment our eye is less sensitive to, a blue or red etc., because it doesnt have to carry as much green for that end of the shift to register as Saturated.
Great video, I have a set of galaxy dust but been worried about wasting it. What paint do you use for the shiny black base? The only gloss black I have ever had success with is my lacquer black but I don’t think it would play well with acrylics
Go with the black lacquers, you won't have a problem at all using that as a base for the Vallejo
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks for the tip. Binge watched a few of your videos from the back log, great work all around
Robert, one more question regarding tools. Do you have a link for the airbrush stand just to the left of the paint package at 0:13?
Robot Kai is where I got it but they've been out of stock for a while now
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks. I've clicked their notify me when available button. Guess we'll see how long that takes 🙂
Very nice!! If I may ask, what PSI do you have the brush set for when using the Vallejo?
Ah, Just caught you saying 15PSI. Thanks!!
It's set for 15 because the Patriot Airbrush I used only calls for that no matter what paint your using. It's a super efficient airbrush in that manner. But if it's a different airbrush then go with 20 to 30
@@barbatosrex9473 That definitely makes sense there. Thank you for clarifying!
would you consider doing some spray tests of colorshifting paints on clear parts, for modelers looking for tinting jet canopies and HUDs?
Did you know the Alclad makes a military canopy and HUD Tinting paint?
@@barbatosrex9473 thanks for the tip, was not aware that alcad offered that. I’m in Taiwan and alcad is not readily available here, but I will look into them. Thanks! Keep up the great work!
Hey Rex, with all these color shifts you are hitting, any recommendation on a Red based shift? Looking for something neat for an MG Red Frame. The SMS Eclipse is close, but something with a bit more pop would be great. Any ideas?
I have some red based color shifts from Green Stuff World coming this week. I ordered them because they're red as I don't have any like that. So stayed tuned I might have thay video up soon. Also I'm stsrting a Patreon where I'm going to answer personal requests and test
@@barbatosrex9473 right on. I shall await your post.
what would happen if you mixed a couple of those before spraying?
That's a great idea. I'll try that and post it on my soon to launch Patreon 👍
Awesome. I know you've mentioned this before but what temp do you run your dehydrator at to dry the paints?
120 degrees
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks. I always set my at 122° for some reason that I don't remember so I really wanted your opinion. I appreciate your videos.
@@CAMgeek it has strange settings too like 132 degrees or 118
Hey quick question for you, my setup is an Iwata Neo/Iwata Ninja combo so limited to 20 PSI. Would I still be able to use these paints as easily as you if I replace my .35 needle with a .5? Or will I still need to thin these out a bunch due to using sub 20 PSI?
The 0.5mm should do it. Grab a small bottle of Vallejo Flow Improver, a few drops in each batch of paint will help
@@barbatosrex9473 Awesome I'm going to go ahead and order the new needle setup and paints then! :D thanks a bunch for the reply, this is my 1st air brush setup and your channel has been so informative ^^
Quick question for you what's the temperature you're running your dehydrator on?
120
Thanks
Is it me or this is virtually a blending cheat? Very impressive!
These are great paints. Go on Super easy too
