  • In this video, I'm going to show, detailed as possible, step-by-step the timing chain procedure for this BMW M57N2 engine. Is a long and boring video, but if someone is searching any type of information about this timing chain assembly and it is not able to find it anywhere else, most likely he will do it here :D

Fantastic video. Doing the M57TU head and couldn't have started without your video.Thanks.
Couple of things I would like to note.
Head removal can be done with engine in the car. There are two 10mm bolts at the back of the head holding a wiring harness to the head, PITA, I head to set a plank up across the front quarter panels and lie on it to get them undone.
I suspect the pros leave the exhaust manifold bolted to the head and simply undo the V clamp to the turbo and when refitting attach it first. Makes it very heavy but with the engine in the car its difficult to attach the exhaust manifold correctly.
Also there is no need to removing the timing cover which saves a lot of work. The locking of the top chain tensioner is an issue when reassembling but there is port that when removed allows you to insert the locking pin. Haven't started putting it back on yet and I suspect I will have remove the serpentine belt to get that port open.
    Thanks again

@@szymondabrowski8866 no ... just tear the entire engine apart and save 30€ for the oil pump chain (irony for those who don't get it). however if you want to change the chains without removing the oil pan you might skip the oil pump chain since it's not very likely to have issues. however the chain wheel of the crankshaft might have sharp teeth and chaning the chains without all wheels with sharp teeth will wear out the new chain quickly.

Great video. I have just removed the timing cover on my M57 which has done 100k miles. I notice that there is quite a bit of black silicone sealant all around the cover's gasket and not just in the corners like you show. Is this a sign that someone has had it off before and put it back with sealant? Or is it like this from the factory? Does not look very neatly spread like a factory job.
I don't know the past history so don't know if the chain had already been replaced. Possibly the cover was removed for other reasons like to fix an old leak or charge a pump.

The oil pump chain is really cheap, so I prefer to play it safely and change it everytime when I get to this point. I have never seen a broken oil pump chain on this motors. Even if the chain skip a teeth, it is not a big deal, it is not like you will hit some valve or hit the piston :D

Amazing video! I really appreciate the content. I have an e65 730d 2007 so also the N2 engine. I have a question regarding the HPFP. What would you recommend to be the best replacement part number? Looking on real OEM there have been various revisions. My pump is suspected to be leaking as I have a rising oil level. Is an R90 really needed? The latest part number revision is 13518511824. Any help is greatly appreciated!

This pumps are really reliable. You need just to find someone that can change your gaskets on the pump and you will be good to go for a long period of time
