  • In this video we look at taking the third exit at Barkby Road roundabout in Leicester.
    To do well with roundabouts you need to develop a good understanding of how the lanes work. With this transferable skill it'll become easier for you with a little practice.
    There are other skills and areas that may need developing but in these videos we focus on what most learners seems to find confusing or difficult.

    This video is gold, I have watched so many videos but none of them mentioned when to watch out for lane splitting and how to take your left lane as reference not to drift away and carefully move into the lane of your choice, thank you so much for this 🙏🏼

    Unfortunately not all UK roundabouts are directionally marked

      That’s correct James.
      Thank you for your input.
      Once you can manage marked roundabouts, you can follow a similar course at unmarked roundabouts.

      @@Drivinglessonvideos That all depends on the layout of the roundabout and how many lanes lead onto and go from it.I still get caught out even driving hgvs for 35 years some are poorly designed.😁

    As you can see the 3rd in exit has 2 lanes… if you choose the outer part of the roundabout to take the exit you should move to your left lane as you exit and stay put on the inner lane if you’re existing on the right lane of the exit . I think that’s how it is!

    • @Drivinglessonvideos
      @Drivinglessonvideos  Před 2 lety +2

      Sounds about right.
      However, where possible it’s best to learn how to negotiate a roundabout and finish using the left lane.
      If you exit the roundabout using the right lane, you’ll need to safely change lanes to the left at your earliest convenience.
      Left lane is for normal driving, right lane is for overtaking or turning right.
      Hope this helps

    What would you do if someone was on the left hand lane (as you moved from right lane to left lane) blocking the road to the 3rd exit?

    • @Drivinglessonvideos
      @Drivinglessonvideos  Před 4 lety +9

      That’s a very good question and many drivers share a similar concern.
      Most importantly check your rear view and left door mirror before spiralling out to the far left.
      As long you hold your position well by sticking to the left lane marker to the outer part of the roundabout, you should be okay.
      Your positioning as you’re going around the roundabout is very important and drivers often make decisions or assumptions based on your positioning.
      For this very reason the mirror checks before spiralling out are crucial.
      If someone was in the outer lane (left lane), you’d adjust your speed as required and follow behind them.
      Hope this helps

      It’s difficult to answer your question without knowing the road/roundabout layout.
      If you can provide us with more information with the particular roundabout you maybe referring to and we’ll try our best to assist.

    I have a roundabout near my house that I understand only partially I understand all the exits except for 1. The reason being is because all other exits have arrows before the roundabout telling you what lane to use however on one side there aren't any arrows but there are two lanes before the round about. And 3 lanes on the roundabout. I understand that using the left lane you can use the first lane on the roundabout to take the first exit on the left. And using the left lane also you use to go straight ahead however I struggle picking which lane to use while turning right using the 3rd exit. The roundabout has 3 lanes on it which changes to 2 lanes in some places. While setting off from the confusing exit the left lane follows around but after the 2nd exit it splits back into 3 lanes, the far left being the only one that you can use to take the 3rd exit. Do I use the left lane all the way around and then move onto the new far left lane when taking the exit or do I use the far right lane until my exit then move 2 lanes over to the far left ??? Sorry this sounds very confusing i hope someone can help me understand as there are no signs or road markings telling you what lanes to use to turn right from one of the exits 😕. I am confused because normally I would use the far right lane to turn right at a roundabout as we have been taught but when passing the 2nd exit the lanes on the roundabout change from 2 to 3 and me being in the far right lane seems very bad lane decipline moving 3 lanes to the left to take an exit and doesnt feel right hope someone understands and can explain the roundabout it tesco roundabout in oldham and has 5 exits the exit i use mostly is coming from featherstall Road upwards

      Hey,
      Thank you for your question.
      If you look at the video showing 4th exit, it is a good example and hopefully help you clear up any confusion.
      From the right lane, you’re expected to move out to the far left because the lanes split.
      Hope this helps.
      Many thanks

      @Drivinglessonvideos  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi
      Thanks for your question.
      It’s recommended you use the left lane to exit the roundabout as per the video.
      Left lane is for normal progress and right lane is used to overtake.
      Unless you have a good reason to exit using the right lane, it’s safer to exit using the left lane.
      If you did exit using the right lane, once you’ve left the roundabout you’d be required to move to the left lane.
      You’d be making more work for yourself exiting on the right.
      Hope this helps.
