    What happens if you are leaving the oundabout from the inside lane, but there is a car to your left (in the outside lane) either going straight or leaving? It is unlikely to happen, but what should you do? Slow down and let them pass (risk being rear-ended), or go around again?

      Depends on the situation because every situation is unique. Aim to exit the roundabout in the right lane if there is one, if not exit gradually but don't cut across him- he might hold back and let you exit. If it's too awkward just go round again

    Thanks Dane for such a wonderful pictorial explanation. Still I have a question about one particular roundabout which I'm posting here in a hope that you will resolve the answer. In Cork, at Wilton roundabout while driving through R641 to take R849 3rd exit . In R641 we have to keep our car in far right most lane (3rd one) and approach the roundabout. There are 2 lanes in R849 3rd exit (Google map isn't showing 2 lanes). Now my query is, which lane should I join while I exit R849? Either the left lane or right lane? Thanks.

    Hi Dane,
    I am preparing for my test. If there are two lanes on the 3rd exit. We have to stick to the right lane with right indicator until we pass the second exit and indicate left on approaching 3rd exit and aim to exit on the right lane and as we go shift to the left lane. Please do correct me if I am wrong.

    Hi Dane, Thanks for making wonderful video. It really improved my driving. Lately I am getting confused about lane discipline on roundabout and exiting from it(especially on 3rd exit). Generally roundabout lanes are marked with doted white lines, so car can change lanes. As per you explanation, I see you are changing lanes just before exiting the roundabout (3rd exit). Some roundabout do have 3 lanes, so if I follow this approach, I need to cross two lanes to exit from roundabout!
    My instructor was explaining to come to outer lane after crossing the 2nd exit point and exit from roundabout like doing 1st exit. I am bit confused here which approach should I practice and looking for you guidance in getting this doubt cleared. Thanks,

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 2 lety

      Depends on the roundabout, I can't answer that because all roundabouts are different. Try exit in the left lane if safe but you can exit in the middle or right lane if the road markings allow.

    Great video

  • @okidot
    @okidot Před rokem +1

    Do you still teach this approach? To be honest (as I was also advised, however this is an old video so might be updated) is to indicate as you come in line with the island and start to exit into outer lane at this point, otherwise the chance of someone cutting off your exit by overtaking you in the outer lane (on your inside) is much higher, or the common scenario of someone trying to enter the roundabout too early because they think you’re going around.
    I find most people don’t know how to use roundabouts

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před rokem

      Indicate as you come in line with the island... What is this supposed to mean? I think you might want to to read up on the rules of the road.

    • @okidot
      @okidot Před rokem +1

      @@DaneTygheletsdrive Jesys… I’m using you’re terminology! You’re saying not to indicate until after you pass the island. I’m saying isn’t it safer to indicate asap - such as when you are just passing the island? The amount if chancers on roundabouts is shocking, and indicating after the island is too short notice.
      I should read the rules of the road!?
      I’m concerned that you’re an instructor when you’re getting cheeky over a question you should be able to answer!
      Must not be your first time criticised (and frankly, it was a polite question!)

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před rokem

      Is that what I said in the video? You should indicate left at the time you pass the island of the exit before your exit. I don't see where or why I would ever dispute this.
      This video is on the third exit so I thought you meant only indicate as you pass the exit. But for the 3rd exit to the right you'd be indicating before the roundabout. You worded it wrong, don't worry I forgive you.

    I've encountered a roundabout with 2 "lanes" but where the lanes are divided by a continuous white line (I believe the central reserve of the roundabout used to be bigger and include the inner lane but the central part was shrunk to accommodate larger vehicles as it was narrow beforehand). Despite not knowing the roundabout, do you think you should therefore just remain in the outer lane at all times because you shouldn't cross a continuous white line?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 5 lety +1

      It's undesirable to dry steer but it's not really a mark against you, it's best to do the small and medium sized roundabouts in 2nd but the bigger ones could be done in 3rd if safe, as for corners it would usually be easier to do them in 2nd gear but it depends on the situation.

You shouldn't be faulted if you miss one gap but if you repeatedly hesitate it may count against you. But be patient because a lot of the time you cannot go if the situation is very busy, there is a big difference between being over cautious and dealing with a busy mini roundabout.

      There's many factors to consider. You stay in the right hand lane - so 2 lanes on, is there also 2 lanes off? in which case, exit in the right hand lane. If there's only 1 lane off then use the 12 o'clock rule www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/appendix-roundabouts If the exit is actually straight over then you should enter in the left lane. If there were an accident, you would be held liable (see my reply to Valentine). The 12 o'clock rule has been taught for decades & if you search the web, plenty of schools still teach it.

    Hi, Dane Might be a slightly ridiculous question here. But my instructor is an instructor and appears to also be a tester from the way he is going on and when booking my next appointment he does say can't do that day due to test. I was wondering when I'm done all 12 lessons and book my test, Can it be with him or is the tester a complete stranger? Thanks.

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 5 lety +1

      Ok there appears to be some confusion here. If you are in Ireland you cannot be a driving tester and an instructor, a tester is employed by the government as a civil servant, a driving instructor is a private business operator who teaches people to drive and helps them prepare for the test. I would guess that your instructor is simply an Instructor and has probably someone else already booked in (someone else who has a driving test) on that date.
      You do not have to stay with the same instructor, you are perfectly entitled to change instructor if you want.

      @@DaneTygheletsdrive Oh, Ok. Gotcha. I'm in Ireland, Was just odd as while he was taking my name down in the book I saw some peoples name and "test" beside it. Might just be for reference or something. Do driving instructors do mock tests in Ireland?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 5 lety +1

      I would do that as well in my diary, if a learner driver had a test I would mark that down as a test so I can keep the car free if they needed to rent it or whatever, very often people would do a lesson on the hour before the test which helps prepare them. I would say most instructors would certainly do a mock test.

    Can we use left lane to exit 3rd exit ?

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 2 lety

      No but you could probably drift into the left lane briefly as you are exiting the roundabout

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 2 lety +1

      That would depend on the signs and markings, normally it would be right lane but it depends on the situation.

  • @simplesofisticatedjs3106

    Did not pass today and I got an unexpected mark 3 on the roundabout which the instructor didn't mention in the feedback😞very disappointed I watch your videos which are great .......in real situation it is a bit different

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 3 lety

      Sorry to hear that. If you got a grade 3 then the tester is saying that you did something serious or potentially serious. But nothing compares to the reality of driving and gaining experience.

      @@DaneTygheletsdrive thank you for the reply he didn't mention anything about wrong doing on roundabouts I had the surprise to see on the evaluation sheet sent by email.I had a few roundabouts but not the challenging type .

    • @DaneTygheletsdrive
      @DaneTygheletsdrive  Před 3 lety

      That's unfortunate because the sharing of information helps. But remember there's no smoke without fire, if he gave you a grade 3 mark then don't overlook it just because you can't figure out how it happened. A grade 3 mark is serious.

    Never too old to have a recap but, biggest problem with multi lane roundabouts are when they are so full of vehicles that one cannot see the arrow markings on the road of the roundabout.
