    Thank you so much for reacting to this! Their costumes and makeup aren't just for this video, there's a lot of lore put into this band and they're meant to be robots that were originally created for a war but were later repurposed to be singing automatons. The lead singer in this one is Rabbit and the tall silver one with the deep voice is The Spine. They're both still in the group (and twins in real life!) but the 3rd member has changed a couple of times. It's The Jon in this video, who was replaced by Hatchworth, who was replaced by Zer0. A couple of other popular songs by them are Automatonic Electronic Harmonics, Brass Goggles and Transform. I personally like Wired Wrong which is sang by The Spine. Lyin' Awake is also a good (and newer) song which is sang by Zer0. :)

      Thanks for the info on this band. They were really interesting and I want to see more so I'll have to check them out. I love the story of being made for war but then repurposed as singing automatons! How cool. I do love Steampunk stuff so they are kind of right up my alley it seems. Thanks again!

      Worth mentioning that they were originally formed as street performers at the San Diego Zoo, and the two siblings who make up the core of the band have been through mime school which is how they came up with the robot movements. They're incredible musicians and creatives in general, and have a great stage show as well if one ever gets the chance to see it. Some of my favorite music videos I definitely recommend would include: Transform (gives some backstory on one of the singers), Brass Goggles (explains some of the bands' lore), Malfunction (stunning music video that everyone should see at least once), I'll Rust With You (one of my favorite songs, super fun and energetic), and of their cover videos, either I Love It or Diamonds, these show more of their silly side.

    • @35manning
      @35manning Před 4 lety +22

      As mentioned, Rabbit is now Bunny.
      Aka Isabella Bennett.
      She's a MTF transgender woman who recieved good support from the band and fans and transitioned her stage character a few steps ahead of her real transformation.
      The song transform (there's a solo version of Isabella singing it along with photos of all the versions of her character, you can notice the happiness increase) about her feelings as is the song Malfunction (where you can see all the band members making a subtle appearance without makeup).
      I highly recommend you review Malfunction.

    SPG started out as buskers in San Diego. There are a lot of great little videos of them doing their skits on the street. They played at the San Diego Zoo for a couple of summers. Watching them interact with the crowds there really shows what great entertainers they are. There's a lot more to their act than the songs.

    Rabbit and the Spine are identical twins. Rabbit does the voice of Gigi, the giraffe. She is the one wearing the goggles, and sings the high notes while spine usually does the low notes. Their vocal range is identical and in other videos you will see them trading parts. You should definitely watch their other work. I would recommend "I Don't Have a Name for it"

This was a secret until I learned that I am not alone. Lots of people listen to it over and over. Apparently, the personnel of this band has changed over the years, which is sorrowful to know. Woah! Awesome seeing someone reacting to and discovering SPG, they're surch an amazing band/act. Their comedy at their shows is sooo great, and they have such good harmonies. They've recently been working on a new CD actually and released some more stuff, and some of their more recent songs are honestly probably some of my favorites. Hot On The Trail, Transform, and Lyin Awake all have some great vocals, and a different member is lead singer of each song. Hot On The Trail is sang by Spine, who was the silver robot with the deeper voice. Transform is sang by Rabbit, the lead singer of this song who is also MtF transgender, she worked that into her character and it's been amazing seeing her growth and transformation. And Lyin' Awake is done by Zero, the current third member of the band. He has a ridiculously great voice, Lyin Awake doesn't have a video due to everything that's recently been going on in the world, but they decided to release the single anyways since people have been waiting for it ever since they started performing it at shows. Hope to see more of them from ya, I'll definitely be sticking around!

  • @darkchiron
    @darkchiron Před 4 lety +2

    Can I nerd out a bit on this band? Sure I can, if you'll indulge me. As a concept, the band is a group of singing automatons built for a war against giant, copper, African elephants. Once the war ended, they were left with nothing else to do but become a singing automaton band. This story is, in general, told in the song "Brass Goggles": czcams.com/video/dDRHx4cPgbE/video.html
    Steam Powered Giraffe has undergone many, many changes over the years. They started as a comedy improv act that performed as buskers on college campuses as these robot personas. Their music has spanned a ton of different genres and they have a lot of different types of songs out there. I'll just start with the roster and good songs that are considered 'their' song.
    The silver gentleman is the Spine. He has an insane range to his voice, and can seem to sing just about anything. As a character, he is the more serious, responsible one of the group. He also typically sings songs that are more introspective and sings about things he wishes he could have, but can't because he's not human. This is reflected in one of their new songs, "Hot on the Trail": czcams.com/video/5F1awDvbx9s/video.html
    The lead singer (on this song) is Rabbit. She came out as transgender not long after this album, and was afraid to change the robot character to reflect that. But with fan support, she decided to change the character to female as well. Her character in the band is eccentric/insane to the extreme, and her songs typically deal with that. Otherwise, they deal with pining over a lost love. The height of a song showing her insanity is a newer song called "Latum Alterum", but be warned, IT GETS WEIRD: czcams.com/video/Q8g9RAmR4DM/video.html
    The gentleman in the top hat is The Jon. He left the band not long after this, so he doesn't have a lot of songs. But the ones he has seem to have a more old vaudeville style to them. The best I can think of is "Juju Magic": czcams.com/video/4dLFjIu3sdw/video.html
    They had a lady called Upgrade that wasn't with them very long. Sorry, but I don't know that much about her.
    The Jon was replaced by a gentleman named Hatchworth, or Hatchdawg to his friends. He was very light hearted in how he behaved, childish at times in his naivety. He is also fairly eccentric. The songs he performs are usually completely out there in subject matter, but have a kind of mad genius to them if you actually dig into the lyrics and try to understand what he's saying. It's a truly bizarre thing. His songs also have a bit more of an electric sound to them. I think the song for him should be "Fancy Shoes": czcams.com/video/PT2hUsu3tmQ/video.html (the link skips an intro 30 seconds of video plot that isn't the song)
    Finally is Zer0, who replaced Hatchworth. He's a bearded gentleman who has a more funky/soul sound to his songs. His character is loving and he just wants to make everyone happy. A good song for an introduction to him would be "Lyin' Awake", and the song has MAXIMUM funk: czcams.com/video/tFSoh0Y3Yk8/video.html

      They all have such wonderful additions and bits that make up a wonderful whole. Like yeah, Latum Alterum is a great idea of how Rabbit sees the world, buuut, Rabbit according the the lore was created long before the others and is crafted of older materials and is far more prone to breaking down. Those malfunctions add up, yanno. (Should we be worried Rabbit sees the Walter Workers as demons?) ((Then again she's the one who has the tendency to express dread and fear to the WW's turning them off)

    Oh boy i havent listened to SPG in a long time. They really are awesome. oh and to keep you updated, if you see a female in the newer videos, that is the lead singer in this video post sexchange, and her and the silver one (called The Spine) are twins in real life. The bronze one is not part of the group anymore and there has been alot of changes since this video in terms of the third man.

      *transition-- sex change is a super antiquated and honestly pretty offensive term.

    So glad this finally got to the top of your list. I had to watch the video twice because I loved your reactions so much. If you want to see Spine (Tall silver one in the back) absolutely shine, I recommend his cover of Rihanna's Diamonds next go around with SPG.

    Their song Ya Ya Alternum is great too! I'm loving their newest album so muuuuch.. Zero's perspective and addition to the band has been so healing through the latter bit of and after everything awful the band and its fans have been through because of Michael Reed's and Steve Negrete's actions.

    This was the first song/video that I'd ever heard of SPG... and was blown away. They are amazing. The frequent many SteamPunk events normally. They are amazingly talented. Their line-up has changed a couple of times, but the music has always remained amazing and creative. Should chekc out a few of their other songs with the different line-up.

    While I'm currently wearing head phones, that is only to avoid disturbing my room mate. I have 170 watt speakers on either side of my bed, and if he were not trying to sleep, I would have the sound turned up loud enough to shake the house.
    One reason I'm watching music videos tonight is to distract myself from the loss of an 8 legged friend. I lost her to the cold weather we just went through. Yes, it's a spider and she lived behind my bedroom curtain.

    Since this was a Bunny song (The one with the umbrella) she is my favourite writer, maybe you should listen to a song by Spine(the silver one) Hot On The Trail is my fav by him and it's new. Or Fire Fire, Bunny wrote I'll Rust With You too it is really good as well probably my favourite of all of their musics.. Normally if they are the main singer, they wrote that song as a note if you listen to them more. Everyone is so kind, fun and talented though I love all their stuff, one of my favourite bands that are not heavier side. Also I am late you got recommended so thought I would come and see ya a bit. o/

    Always interesting watching ya come across new bands even more of a bonus when it's one that I know. If you ever get the opportunity another great rabbit hole to go down is Aviators, I'd start with Godhunter or Traveler's song.
