Miss Melbourne 1980's
Loved the speciality shops in Melbourne in the 80s. They gave me reason to go into the CBD. These days, Melbourne doesn’t have anything I can't buy off the net, so there's nothing unique or interesting about it to me.
I worked there at Menzies in the mid 80s as a night cleaner ,
Gotta say it was very posh
Great video, brought back some memories. It was great not to see any mobile phones around, and people looking around and talking to each other.
totally different now. Great to go back to those days.
Glad you enjoyed it
Not a single SUV or Tradie Ute in sight. Those were the days!
Melburn memories...
0:46 Ford FE LTD in Crystal Mint later looks to be another FE LTD at 4:00 in white or its a stretch ZL Fairlane limo with LTD boot badge as same or similar car appears later at end of video. Nice to see these days gone by 👍
My home town, I would have been running amok in the city back in those days.
Melbourne was at it's highlight era in 1988 as was much off the rest of Australia, I miss this era/timeline so much. Unfortunately I hate the area now (much patience with the city came to a stand still by 2019!!) and I will never go back there ever again. But I will always love 80's melbourne but I can't do it anymore now.....
can you give some reasons why you don't like it now? It almost looks exactly the same in terms of the buildings, just the cars are different, different haircuts.
Obviously there's been a cultural shift since then and more immigration from asia
@@WarningTimes , it's hard to say when you've been there for over 4 decades here and you've seen too much etc. I'm not sure how long you've been around here, so I can't say on your part because you may or may not be younger than me. Unless you where there all those decades ago for me to explain would be pointless unless you were there when the city was better?! Yes change comes and is constant and the immigration has always been around but the city is dead, lifeless and a concrete jungle. Our current and former premiers/city council have eroded the history of this too. Perhaps the best way for me to explain to you is if you watch melbourne throughout the 1980/90's on CZcams to get a better idea here. Maybe it's just me but if the boat as now floats for you?! Enjoy it.
@@TheAxelay Well I came into this world in 1995, so never experienced the 80s :D
I don't really go to the CBD anyway I just go to Frankston, Mornington (because I live near to these places), or places on the Frankston line that aren't too far away.
There has been a change to working from home due to the pandemic, so a lot of people aren't bothering to commute to the CBD and back, and more people are moving further away. It has its pros and cons, the problem with Melbourne always has been that the CBD is quite far from the outer suburbs (1 hour or more train journey), and there is nothing going on in the suburbs, but now that is changing, Frankston is improving (more bars and cafes opening) and Mornington for example is becoming much more popular. I'm sure this is happening to other suburbs that are further away from the CBD.
I think this is good, because in Europe, e.g. Prague, the city is way less spread out like Melbourne which means that everyone can access the centre of the city more easily to hang out, go to cafes, etc. Melbourne being more spread out means that it really needs to have more 'CBDs', in other words there should be CBD-like areas in the outer suburbs so those people don't need to travel 3 hours+ return each day just to go to the CBD.
But yeah I agree with you that the CBD has lost its charm, I remember being in the CBD a year and a half ago, and it was grim and I wondered why I even bothered to spend all that time on the train to get there.
@@WarningTimes , I won't ruin it for you as I have no right to do that as I came into this world via 1978 here so there's a difference here. I won't bother to ramble on because it doesn't help anyone but you can learn alot on how melbourne used to be via YT (suggest melbourne tourism 1/2 to get idea here?!) but only if you're interested here?! Because what you value now is what you'll miss later on down the line or as you you've already noticed the charm going as it is here. No matter the gen, we all lose under this council and state government here. I'll say enjoy what can now because it won't last forever and I hope you go away with some kinda good memories here. I may hate the current CDB but I now venture outer melbourne now but I fear the gentrification will destroy that too?! It's already started via places like Geelong here.
@@TheAxelay To be fair, most of Melbourne's best architecture was lost between the 1950s-70s when there was very little heritage protection, and replaced with a lot of the uglier 'modernist' and 'brutalist' architecture. Since the 1970s, there was an effort to preserve what was left of Melbourne's best Victorian and Art Deco architecture and most of it remains intact since then. I think there have also been a lot of improvements such as making the city centre more pedestrian and bike friendly to discourage cars, because without those initiatives, imagine how much worse the traffic would be.
There has been some great losses - in the 90s I loved going to a lot of the unique, independent stores scattered around the city but they've mostly been wiped out by bland chains. Also some of the newer development in the north end of the CBD and Southbank is just horrible and lacks character. And the loss of the 'suburban' (inner city) VFL grounds marked the end of a very unique part of AFL culture.
Overall though, the public transport is much better, the walkability is better, there are less cars, more public spaces, the pre-war architecture has stopped being demolished like it was in the decades leading up to the '80s, there are so many more options for food, drink, entertainment, etc.
Time always marches forward and we can't stop it. We can only do our best to adapt with it as best as possible which for the most part, Melbourne has managed to do very well. Right now due to the Metro Tunnel works it feels chaotic and 'unfinished' with a lot of construction but the pay off will be worth it when it's all complete in the next 2 years.
I'm sure during the 1960s-70s it felt much the same with the construction of the City Loop, coupled with all the 'Whelan The Wrecker' signs as our Marvellous Melbourne heritage was ruthlessly demolished for the brutalist/modernist towers of that era.
Before the real estate madness - a better place sure.
The past 25 years has been a massive class war and the saddest part was watching the working and middle class vote for their demise as Rupert Murdoch whipped them on
Woooooow even though it was in the 80's I can still see most buildings today. Thank goodness most of its been maintained. But thankful the city is now bussling with more culture and more people.
More culture lol. That's what's destroying Australia 🇦🇺
@@ACDZ123 uhhhh No. Culture is whats keeping your Centrelink benefit going.
@BTgla oh yeah 🤣 you mean my taxes and WA economy keeping all you dole bludgers and refugees in Melbourne alive..Victoria is broke ...but yer my centrelink 🤦
Yep left wing as always. Wrong wing is what it really is.
@BTgla nah Western Australia is what's paying your centrelink mate ..Victoria is broke lol 😆
Went into the city today, barely recognisable today, dirty empty shops, not as clean as it was , so sad
All looks much the same to me

My god I was there
Love it.👍🏽
Thank you! 😊
The trams and public transport hasn't changed much.
Hoping to see and hear one of Melbourne's Leyland National buses with the 2 speed automatic. Only ridden with four speed semi automatics (that sounds like a manual - which it essentially is).
When Melbourne was Australian dont know what country it is today in Melbourne
Many things have changed in 35 years, but so much of this is recognisable. Except for the clothes and cars, some of this could have been shot in Jan 2023.
Not really. You can see more of the sky in some of those shots due to there being less skyscrapers in the background. Also the demographic make up of the pedestrians has changed much since then.
You're talking bulldust OP.
Never mind the fuddy duddy's. They're one thing that will ALWAYS exist, no matter what decade we're in, constantly bleating about how much better it was in "the good old days". 🤣 Poor old dears.
Ironically, the ones bleating today tend to very easily forget that their parents and grandparents used to say the EXACT SAME THINGs about these so-called good old days they're talking about now.
Only it was how crap the 70's, 80's and 90's were, compared to the 1940's, 50's, 60's and even earlier than that.
Yep, just proving that some things will never really change.
Especially grumpy old folks. 😜😂
Melbourne as, Melbourne!
Great to see the Old Melbourne before bring completely ruined with almost empty Bike lanes.
Pathetic weak left wingers wrecking it these days. Before, it was Jeff Kennett.
My home town. Reservoir, preston boy born & bred. 😊
I live in CBD on Collins street. The super tram stops, bike lanes paid parking metres til 10 pm and everything north of Bourke street is now suited for Asians and Uni students (one in the same) have destroyed the feel and vibe of the CBD. The current City Council has destroyed what it once was.
If you and your family all got a job and didn't rely on government support ie.. centrelink.. we would not of come to this! So make a change and do the right thing
love old footage like this. always wonder how people live back then.
People knew how to interpret traffic signals, pedestrian signals, how to look both ways when crossing, how to drive properly and navigate the city streets, turns etc unlike today's morons
"old footage", "back then".....it's not the 1920's!
@@user-uh6lm5wv6n
Oh yeah, back in the past when drink driving was considered fine and no seat belts kept everyone much more safer.
Back when no-one ever jay walked, either.
And back when the road toll was still substantially high, considering the population was much less than it is today.
Geez, some people spin a lot of bull, while wearing their rose coloured glasses.
City is full of Australians. Weird.
What’s the song?
Whatever it is, it's awful. Doesn't suit the video at all. Maybe suitable for a video of cats doing stupid things.
Had to mute it to watch the video - which is great footage, by the way.
I think someone's been watching too many of those cat videos and its addled their brain.
Back when the Burke St mall had greenery and character, now it’s a sterile concrete disgrace.
EXACTLY!!!!!!
Millions of Chinese taken over by the city and suburbs now. Especially the city is filled with Rich young Chinese driving Expensive cars who doesn’t even knows the rules to drive or knows to park 😅
Absolutely!!!!
Meanwhile, someone clearly wasn't paying much attention in school.
@@mebeme007 lol
Wow back when sleeveless tops were compulsory for women
It's Hellbourne now. Empty bike lanes, no parking, and lots of people from...
Melbs 😅
I watched as Rialto was scraped off a few weeks ago.
Huh?!
The Rialto towers are still there. 🤣
And there's not even any plans to scrap it, let alone it being scrapped already.
@@mebeme007 the name Rialto was above the doors of the old building in Collins Street. I watched the name plate being chiselled from above the doors of the grand 19th century building.
@@willsshepherd2976
Oh, so it sounds like they may be simply changing/updating the signage.
That would've been interesting to see.
I would've tried to get a pic of as much as was left of the sign before it was removed, then thought about going back in later weeks to get a pic of the new one. 😜
I like seeing side by side pics of then and now objects and places, etc.
so much more parking available... god i hate what sally capp has done to this once great city "why arent more people coming to melbourne" gee i wonder why ..
What I noticed was no SUVs driving around. And all the people were Australian.
Same with the cars😅.
How do you know that "all the people were Australian"?
Their faces!
@@jamesfrench7299 there were plenty of Italians there.
Italy-alians.
Now it's Melbourne Mumbai
A noticeable lack of obesity in those street scenes with people- those were the days. Good old Melbourne.
Who loves the 80’s porno music?
😂 I thought it was pretty groovy.
Kinda Bob Marley like. 😜
When everything look and was normal. Rip melbourne
I don't want to say that just yet. We can still save her!
So much better now, how did I survive without Asian food and bubble tea ?😅

I was mid 20s ! Night Clubs York Butter Factory ! The Tunnel ! Melbourne was a Beautiful Lady back then ! Fun Times ! The Fitzroy Football Club ! Moonee Valley Trots ! Mostly Australian Population ! What went wrong ! Politically Correct Flogs who spoilt this wonderful city and took away the things which were Wonderful. I won’t forgive you ! Look what you have created now ! A Mess ! 😂
I do not even recognise Melbourne anymore and it is heartbreaking! I was 19 in 1988 and I too was enjoying night clubs and going to the City Square ( Arghhhh I am devastated that it was taken away from us 😢) and the stores were quality not absolute rubbish! Melbourne looked so beautiful and now it looks dirty and a mess. I can't stand that politically correct is such a big thing now. What happened to having a sense of humour? Oh how I wish for a time machine! Bourke Street Mall was so beautiful 😢

Sigh, when the city of Melbourne was beautiful, original, clean and not Asian ridden. They have come here and destroyed our culture and made it cheap. Love seeing the tram stop in Elizabeth Street and I would often visit that Brashs and bought a few electrical's and VHS tapes from there. And Bourke Street had so much character with the trees and brown setting. Time machine now! ... Thank goodness I grew up in the real Melbourne
