Making A Crimson Peak Housecoat // So Much Flannel

  • It's time for another housecoat, and this one was just staring at me from the pages of Pinterest as I was researching the Mandragora gown. The adorable grey coat from Crimson Peak...but in cotton flannel! Am I tempted to make a few more of these in other colors? I'll wait until I have a proper Victorian house to haunt perhaps!

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Honestly, I have to take half a Xanax at night so I can actually fall asleep without my mind wandering off into disturbing visuals. Off topic sort of, but my favorite housecoat in my life was when I was 4 and had my tonsils taken out. White flannel nightgown with red narrow stripes, the yoke said, "Twinkle twinkle little star" and had rhinestones here and there. The housecoat was red quilted fabric, red buttons with a rhinestone in the center, and a music box in one of the pockets. 1966 glamor, or I thought it was. I also thought they were real diamonds. I had forgotten about that.

darted to princess conversion??? *BOOF!!* mind blown... thank you for the possibilities, I need to try reversing this now...
Oh, and I used the princess seam kefta pattern as a base to make a wool housecoat in January, I screwed up the neckline by widening it across the back and ended up fixing it by piecing in some fabric to bring in the neckline a bit and then hiding the resulting correction with a capelet :) I also eliminated the waist seam because I don't need extra bulk (I'm bulky enough) and also I was pattern matching plaid so figured the waist was a good point to have a wide purple band in the plaid pattern.

I fully admit I watched it for Tom Hiddleston ( I may be Aro ace but I have eyes and aesthetic beauty is still a thing) and and goths content. If you like gothic-ish visuals I'm gonna recommend another Hiddleston film, only lovers left alive. It's a modern take on a vampire movie but not overtly so and is a visual feast. It's also got Mia wasikowska( cp actress) , tilda Swindon and Anton yelchin.

I am also more of a Maleficent type, but this look makes me want to embrace my Lady Tremaine side. The capelet is epic.

Dating in your 40's is like your preteen concept of crushes; you just pick someone you don't find disgusting and go with it. I'm currently sewing with flannel as well, nothing as fabulous as your panini house coat though. But now I want one lol.

I’ve been thinking of a more substantial husband murdering housecoat than the floofy feathery one everyone was obsessed with. This will definitely work.

Talking about stuffing things with the scraps, and now I'm imagining what a vintage puffer vest /jacket would look like.

Google the word gambeson and you even get the medieaval knight version. Very comfy. I made min with mostly old sheets but they have been stuffed with horsehair, too.
I've read about ancient asian puffer coats for the military filled with cotton fluff, that even could be faked with sawdust if some official was corrupt.

If it's the visuals that get you, you might enjoy The Magnus Archives! I'm also a big fan of creepy things, but can't handle scary visuals, so a podcast works really well for me.

For a hack on sharpening your scissors. You cut some aluminum foil pieces with the scissors and for a little bit it can sharpen them. I use it for paper ones but I don't know about fabric scissors

Do you remember the stepmother in the Disney cartoon Cinderella? She wears a mauve/purple gown with great mutton sleeves. Your dressing gown is lovely! You can wear it over your flannel PJs and tee shirt and feel elegant and first class! You should take a historic train trip down to Sacramento, California and wear your great dressing gown inside your train sleeper car.

I think I have a solution for your eye lid problem. When I wear eyeshadow my eye lids would swell up and I just didn’t know what to do. I found this lid scrub, OCuSoft, and it has really helped. It’s a about $13-$20, depending on which strength you get, but I assure you that it works. Hope you can get back to fully loving eyeshadow without the worry of your eyes. 😍😍😍
