If they parked the truck further down the road, they could have made the job 20 times harder.
Waste Connections of Ottawa does also have a couple grapple trucks that I think would make this easier so that people don't need to lift those things & hurt their backs.

Nice. I grew up in Ottawa so you could say that is where my fascination with garbage trucks originated. What I can say is the folllowing:
from my earliest memories to about 1975 the day to day collection was done by side loaders which wouldn't take bulk. For that, about twice a year, you laid out the larger items and they were collected by a truck with a wooden frame. No compactor. I also remember for day to day collection the trashmen would take the garbage from your house to the curb. Pretty sure the side loader trucks were green and white.
Around 1975 Provincial Sanitation Services took over the contract for the city and had a fleet of bright orange HEIL real-loaders. That's when things got interesting because anything bulky could then be put out with your regular trash. SInce trash day was Friday in our neighborhood I just loved it when Monday was a holiday because that meant trash day got pushed back a day so I got to enjoy following the truck on Saturday. Very fond memories of that. I tried to find photos of the PSS trucks using Google to no avail.
By 1985, Laidlaw had the contract (I don't know if they bought out PSS or PSS went out of business). All of a sudden those orange trucks were gone and Laidlaw had a nice fleet of red white and blue trucks. Most of them were again HEIL, but I remember at least one EZ-Pack Dempster truck. Laidlaw went out of business in the late 1990s and by then I was also out of touch because I had moved away from Ottawa by 2000 so I lost touch of how Ottawa collected its garbage. I think by 1999 the City began doing it with yellow and blue trucks like the one in this video. So I guess the City still does it.

@@canadianphil421 yes we are a subcontractor for multi res pick up in the city so we have a great team of front loads and then the 3 of us on rear load do organics and bulk waste. My truck here we just do bulk pickup

One way i can tell that this isn't recorded in the US is because that hopper sits really low to the ground , ours is at abdomen level not knee level.

I remember, back in the early 70s, a rear loader in our city that was used mainly for bulk. It had a hard time breaking up an old couch my neighbors threw out. These eat couches like popcorn.

The only body you use for bulky items is a rRear Loader I used a front loader for ever on bulky items always had to go on top to move something not rear loader eats it all .
