Y’all making a brotha feel like he can do anything with this instruction video! Imma see my hand at nuclear physics next. Thanks Nest!
A.C. Mitchell it’s actually really easy bro.. just make sure you turn off your power of the house before you install it. If a dummy like me can do it without any help then anyone can..
This killed me dude 😂 definitely confidence inspiring
I fixed a dry wall hole the other day for the first time. Im about to redo my neighbors house now for $12,000. Shit. I’m a beast.
I’m supposed to be paying attention but your comment 😂
Dakota DeMoss lol
Bro doing the electrical work is like that kids game where you need to put different shapes in different holes, props to the engineers for making this possible for my grandma!
i think i could learn simply.. no need to get complicated
Grandma?!😂 I'm definitely installing it now.
And for me
This is a god damned revelation of an instructional video and combined with the online chat support where you can send pictures of your existing wiring etc this should get an academy award.
Bravo google. Bravo. Amazing instructions.
It seems the online chat support where you can send them a picture has gone - I'm trying to find that and it just keeps taking me to the standard support page where you figure things out for yourself, or to the community.
Leave it to Google to, 1) Write and film perfect instructions and 2) build a level bubble into the device. Genius.
This is one of the best tutorials by a company for its own product. Which is sad but in my experience true. Good job 👍
You must have had dealings with Honeywell and their non U.S.A. so called help desk .
Thank you for saying that :) I was taking a trip down memory lane of videos I made and it feels good to see your comment.
Having literally no knowledge of this, it was done on the first try. Hardest part was figuring out the breaker box!!
Installed with no problem after watching this, and I have zero electrician experience. Thank you!
I’m a 50 year old man who is petrified of electricity. You made me feel like I can do this. Thank you.
Because you’re hot
@@robertshields5541 can't say the same for u 😕
Wow, the inside of this thing is incredibly well-designed. Color me impressed.
I just got done setting mine up, I was so shaky disconnecting the wires even though I shut off all electricity to the house. XD
I haven't done many things with electrical work in my life, and this is extremely easy and dummy proof.
So glad this video existed, very helpful.
Dude there low voltage wires not going to hurt they won’t even shock you
@@joelauro5152 that's so good to know. I'm planning on setting up a electronic doorbell so I'm hoping it's going to be at just as easy, even though I probably still have a mild panic attack setting it up.
@@joelauro5152 you should still always turn the power off. Not so much to protect you from low voltages (even if it was 120 you would only feel a tingle) but actually to prevent yourself from shorting out the small fuses and electronics that are inevitably part of an AC system👍🏽
I just had my Nest thermostat installed a couple of days ago and my house is cooling like there's no tomorrow. This is great as I live in Southwest Florida. I love it!
SWFL here too. I can't wait to get one.
Thank you for this video! I installed a Nest thermostat with complete confidence today. Couldn’t have done so without this guidance.
Couldn't be easier...my a/c-furnace thermostat had a 5th brown wire that connected to the "C" terminal....worked like a charm. I believe that some systems have a brown/blue wire that connects to the "C" terminal as mine did. Many thanks to your video for making the installation and setup a piece of cake. Saved me so much time and effort. The Nest system is soooo easy to use. Love it!
how did you labels/recognize different wires ?
Dude thank you for your comment. I was panicking about my blue wire but you helped me deduce what it was
Just installed this in my home. The video was very helpful. I’ve never done any electrical work before but it was simple. I recommend having a wire stripper in case you need to clean up some of the wires.
Wow ! Impressive that u installed this by yourself . Did have to install anything else where the boiler is installed ?
@@HBFREEWORLD Nope, I just worked at the thermostat. But you should check what wires you have as that might change things.
@@MrAgility888 thanks
i find this so strangely satisfying
It's just so chill
Ya it is so satisfying

I did it, thank you so much for these step by step instructions! 😊
Very helpful, not overly complicated, nice voice, good product. i just bout the nest and so far so good. expensive but i think it will pay for itself. looks good on the wall.
Thanks for showing us this and clearly. My dad isn't very convinced to switch from a basic thermostat to a smart one but he will if he knows it'll save him money 😉
Your dad is smart. These things are garbage and lie about the temperature to save some trees.
@@daviddahl83 no they do actually work. We've been saving hundreds of dollars this year thanks to these

This is a great video!!! thank you for being very detailed!!!
I like how at 5:02 they shamelessly show of their 1 star app :D

It's on the Apple store. Apple is crapple.
The app is incredible
itskplace4 ur made from crap ngl
Its Google trolling Apple. They're also using an iPhone
Easy to assemble, good strong materials, feels good, looks good.
Liked subscribed and rang the bell. Love your videos!
Great video. This old lady did it in 15 minutes.

Very Helpful! Thank You!
This video helped me big time. Made installing a breeze. I just bought this thermostat yesterday.
Ļoti nabadzīga informācija par tik dārgu termostatu
After several attempts and after being connected hours later I followed these steps and it worked. I suggest connect it for a few hours then connect it through the app
If you just have a Red wire, hook it to either Rh or Rc, doesn't mater... Unlike most thermostats, the Nest Learning Thermostat does not require a jumper wire between Rh and Rc. Nest knows that if you've got heating and cooling, and just one R wire, the power source is shared between them. ... Nest Thermostat connectors are built so that only one wire can be inserted per connector.
Thanks I was actually wondering about this like as of this moment!
Same!
Great installation video. Very detailed for the novice.
This is all well & good …..for gas heat applications!!!!
I jus left a house today with a HEAT PUMP & I suspect the installer didn’t configure Nest for the proper system!
You need to show wiring & set up for both gas furnace/ac… and heat pump with auxiliary/emergency!!!
Now I have to go back to this house & check wiring at Nest & configure for heat pump!
The Installer is the main person to blame so far!!!! I’m glad you have info that helps with install & removal!
I don’t wanna tear it up taking it off the wall! Wish me luck!
Thank you,excellent video.
Install was pretty easy, works to spec (in the short run.) The hardest part is having to matching the 20 year old paint, which I am going to call 'Navajo dirt floor' for demonstration purposes. I sure hope that this thing lasts.
Pro tip: cut out a inch x inch square and take it to a paint shop. They use a computer to match the color. Be sure the sample location is a good representation of the color since sun/grease/dust might make it look different than you want. Get a sample size of paint which often is free and then test it out. Mine matched perfectly
Nicely done no PRO needed for this install 👍
Very helpful thanks 👍🏻
I can’t believe how helpful this video was. Just set mine up, no issues. Thanks Nest!
gig yours have five wires
@@denisetaray yes! Though I did have one with only 4 as well for my basement.
@d2haze Did it save you money throughout the year especially summer ?
Thanks! It was so easy
Technology is just outstanding. Great tutorial.
This is a great video. Really well-produced
Ok está muy bien todo eso jiji
Yeah It is from one of the richest companies in America and it shows
I can’t believe I was able to install it myself but I was with this video but I actually did it. I’ve never installed an appliance before in my life.
Good guide, was a bit worried about red wire, there was a fork RC RH or w/e they called. Tossed fork away, put red into RH just like in the video. Yellow green and white were a breeze. It’s all worked out like a charm. I really like this thermostat. Got it for about $200 from amazon on sale and there is no stupid subscription for this item. And it works with my HUE lights system. GREAT PRODUCT, I highly recommend and thank you Nest Labs for this detailed guide. ❤️
Just googled this as I had the same concern. Nest thermostats don't use jumper wires and you can simply ignore it. They use an internal jumper between the Rh and Rc connectors, so an R wire can go into a Nest Learning Thermostat's Rc or Rh connector.
The wire color is arbitrary. You’re lucky red was RH/RC
@@htko89 I live in USA, we have a thing that is called industry standard. I live in condominium complex, not some shack in the swamp.
@@Vladi_AK47 there is no industry standard for hvac wire colours in the USA is what I’m telling you. If you are offended at this please take it up with your country and condominium, OR, just suck it up and take the L.

You are the BEST NEST EVER
Why am i watching this i don't even have a nest

this was helpful. thank you.
Thank you, I just used your video to move my thermostat. Keep up the good work. Subscribed and rang that bell.
You should add a link to the online compatibility checker in the notes
Mine worked great. Easy install of 20 minutes, set up took about 5. I have only 3rd world construction skills and it went smoothly. (Matched up 4 wire system with Gas Forced Air heat and Electric A/C). Watch the video first and it all applied easily.
Are you still using the Nest after 2 years? and you had no issues with using just the 4 wires? Thanks.
Can’t wait to get this for my mom ❤️
thank you again!!!
Show how to install very directly and clearly. Very helpful🙂
Can you add those threshold settings like in Ecobee? In cold areas, furnaces might short cycle every 15mins like four times per hour and waste energy. If we can set the heat to run a minimal 30 mins and the start to run threshold to be 2F, it would actually save more energy.
I don’t even have a nest. I just wanted to watch this video cause I heard it was good. I’m in marketing and develop stuff like this, and this video, is great. I can’t put my finger on exactly why but it’s a hit.
Google purchased Nest so that any other tutorials feature a Pixel phone. Brilliant strategy.
A common line or should I say a fifth Line maybe needed. The line to be stripped & connected on both the nest and furnace well.
Thank you so much for describing very smoothly, but have 1 question regarding my old thermostat, so it has 5 wires as follow RH= 24 Volt, Y/0= air conditioning Compressor, W/B= Heating, G= Fan, Y1= Heat Pump Compressor as per my old thermostat diagram (Hunter Model 44360), if you can describe me which wire goes where please, and thanks again.
Very helpfull
I just want to throw this in here for a heads up. When I installed mine, the "W" cord (the white one) was in the "W" slot on my old thermostat. When I inserted it into the "W" slot into the NEST, only the heat came on. If you're having this problem, take the "W" cord and insert it into the "O/B" slot. The video doesn't tell you this, so it might not apply to everyone, but that's what got mine working.
Other than that, set up really is a breeze.
Do you have a heat pump? That would explain O/B... W is used for conventional air conditioning.
marcin kossakowski Yes, I have a heat pump, and you're right that that's the reason for the O/B. They should mention this in the video IMO.
I think this fixed my problem, thanks so much!
I am having this problem. Weekday do I do with the wire that is already on the o/b spot, as ith was in the original set up
They shouldn't even have this video on here. It's way too basic. Installing the Nest isn't hard, but this doesn't really take into consideration things like what you went through.
Seeing the 1 star review on your own video was enough to stop me buying one.
This video was from 8 years ago genius, look at the same app now, 4.6/5 starts with over 2 million ratings 🤦🏻♀️
Surprised there's not a link to the compatibility page in the description. I know i can search but, it's the little things.
One of the only videos that haven’t gotten the virus
Mine has a bridge on rc to r so idk what to do with that but everything else yall made simple, love this guide. I would recommend this product to everyone and im an installer.
Wish I could still get those old trim panels. I don't like how the new ones bevel outwards, instead of inwards against the wall.
I have that exact thermostat that you removed in the video!
But it has 3 extra buttons and a bigger screen
My existing Honeywell thermostat is connected to the Central Heating pump only and controls that. When the temperature in our hall, where it's situated, drops then the thermostat detects that and turns on the pump and that fires up the boiler and hence the radiators get hot again. Simples!
Why complicate matters so with a swanky device and anyway what it 'Fan' ? I don't have that.
Does the 1/2 moon sticker at the bottom of the 3rd generation nest thermostat come off?
Where can I buy just the round back part where you connect the wires to? We have used the usb plug thus far and dont know where the original box/other items are. Thansk
Wait they show the old stat with the red wire in the RC slot , he puts a RH sticker on then hooks it to the RH on the new stat .. was this a Blooper ? why the change and not hook it RC on the nest like it was on the old stat ?
you probably already know but they are interchangeable
As I wait for delivery of my thermostat, it would have been helpful if the *.pdf and/or this video had the dimensions of the Nest thermostat stated so I would know if I needed to either spackle and paint the wall or get a faceplate to cover the old thermostat marks.
found it: nest.com/thermostats/compare/
Do I need to install wall plugs?
That was useful.
The most important step was making sure the pins stay DOWN when wires are inserted!! Couldn’t get it to work until I watched this video!!
Awesome instructions, can't get easier, bye bye shitty old clunky thermostat, hello new world :) loving it!
I bought one of these, and the first month it was in place my bill soared from 450 dollars to more than 1250 dollars. I called, and they said, "that happens sometimes." They told me how to turn off the "smart" features of the thermostat, and I paid my insane electric bill. I later found out my kids were coming home from school and cranking the ac down in the heat of summer when nobody was home, so that's what it started doing. Can't blame the company for that, but oh my goodness was that a sad discovery. It doesn't seem to shut off reliably when the temperature is reached (it gets way chilly) as well. Can't say I recommend this product because now it's just a pretty thermostat. There needs to be a warning on the box.
Set notifications. If temperature drops above or below where you want it, you'll get a notification
There is also a limit you can enter and a code required to override the range. Helpful for situations like this or for AirBnb's etc
I had to reinstall my jumper wire. the main breaker outside kept tripping. I noticed that in my inside breaker box, my unit has separate fuses for heat power and cool power. I don't know if this is just a random setup, but reinstalling the jumper wire fixed the problem. nothing worse than the power going out in the middle of the night and waking up to a freezing home.
Do I have to turn it off at the breaker box, or can I just turn the furnace off at the off switch on the side of the cabinet? What's this about a "C" connection or the Nest won't work?
Is this product suitable to use with split air conditioner unit ? Only cooling but no heating air conditioner system
The best thermostat in the world
They should really include drywall anchors. If you touch it as much as I touch my thermostat, the whole thing will be hanging loose on the wall in a month.
will it work with white-rogers thermos stat idk how old it is but its not working very well and i wanted to upgrade
hi there, can we have this Thermostat in Australia?
I have near 12 wires some of them don’t have corresponding attachment point, any idea what I should do?
when i hooked all the wires up to the base all i got was hot air. i had yellow in Y, green in G, orange in W1, white in W1, brown in C and red in Rh. when i moved the orange from W1 to OB and the red wire from Rh to Rc, i was able to get cold air when the AC was supposed to be on.
I have only two wires connected to my old one A and B ? Where I schould conect them? Actually I have three wires but one is just free.
I do not need the heatlink if i do it this way? Cause my wires are like in the video. I want it on the wall were the old one is.
I am thinking of getting one but my boiler has a programmer box fitted to it and the thermostat is in the living room so can fix the nest one their. What I need to know is what happens to the box that currently times the hot water and or heating? Does this have to be disconnected? In the box is the heat link and you do not even mention it. We need this to heat the water, so is it not a waste of money just to use this as a thermostat when it does both? This makes this not so easy to do as it is complicated to put the Heat Link in as we need to take off the programmer.
I installed mine perfect. Why does it pump out heat when I turn on the a.c.?
I know I have the wires seated perfectly in the correct spots. I have the heat setting set for electrical for my central heating and air.
Michael PaulRa You need to change your B/O setting
I'm going to try Tomorrow 😯😯 I know we smart 🤓
A little explaining of the wires would help. You had a red wire with just R on it. But somehow you knew to label it RH not the other choice , so how does that work?
Very easy to install. The difficulty I had was just not enough slack from the wires in the wall and getting the trim plate secured. Used too big of a drill bit.
lol
ok compatible with baseboard heating? I rlly want a Nest Thermostat E.
My home thermostat is also controlling water boiler temperature, is this compatible for both water and heating?
Has anyone got the Nest working with a Mitsubishi ducted Air con? I believe it is not such a simple plug in when i researched 2 years ago. My controller is starting to play up and would love to change to a NEST - Must be a solution now?
If I turn off the breaker for my AC unit but the fan is still on, is it okay to install the next then or should I shut off the main power at the breaker box?
If the fan is still running for the AC, this means the power hasn't been shut down fully. You'd want to double check for any breakers labeled AH, Air Handler, Heater, Furnace Etc.
I had the exactly same question
I have a water furnace Honeywell thermostat with A+ B- R and C . The google nest 3 gen has different labelling . Can you please let me know what wires will correspond to the same in Google nest
Not to be nit picky but it would be better if there was a "W" and "Y" sticker to match the W and Y screws instead of W1 and Y1, just makes it more clear in my opinion
How did it get power without the Common wire?
please add adjustable maintenance to the settings
Given that the current crop of Nest thermostats do not have a logo, there is no obvious way to determine which way is up for the installation. Maybe you've got gravity sensors or adapt to the detected connections, I don't know, but you need to update your video in any case.
(For those who don't yet have one, the mounting bracket has an obvious "up", but the device will plug into the bracket two ways. I hope it doesn't matter which way, but my first suspicion is that there is an "up" direction and I cannot tell which way is "up".
Can i replace the old mercury operated thermostat to nest learning thermostat?
Kirby7601 unlikely as that is probably a line voltage (120/240) stat
Brandon Boyce no, they are low voltage 24 v type.
The Compatibility Checker links to the store instead (after selecting the country). Please fix. Thanks.
What if you have 240vac 120vac and you already have a Nest thermostat? Anyway to connect it?
