- I’m making a special leather belt today to barter for a load of firewood from Evan. This is a fun project with a different twist on a belt style that I make create. I think it came out really nice. The belt design was thought up by Evan. The belt is made from veg-tan leather that I purchased from Montana Leather.

Actually it is a great idea to barter with your product as long as your are both satisfied with the trade. People have been bartering long before currency. 😊

That trick with the square works well keeping border stamps lined up. Don’t know why I never thought to use it for stitching. Thanks

Totally agree with you, Robert. That belt turned out great! I really like the double row of stitching and appreciated the additional tip of keeping the stitching holes aligned along the length of the belt. I also like the use of the small square to periodically check your stitching alignment, which I know you have shown in other videos. The choice of hardware really makes the final product pop.

I just found your site! I am subscribed now. You do very good work and are very easy to follow and listen to. I have played with leather as a hobby since the late 70's. I have made a few knife sheaths and belts but I am no where near your skill level. I never thought about bartering. I am going to see your other videos and look forward to your next one.

Beautiful knife sheaths, Jonas! Robert I continue to enjoy visiting your busy little shop. Quick question. Do you like to apply your Resolene straight or do you dilute it? I prefer to dilute mine and enjoy buffing till my arm falls off. Thanks for your enjoyable videos.
One day I guess I will try with it reduced. I use straight from the bottle. I sold coatings for many years. So I figured it’s best to use as designed.

I never made a leather anything so maybe this is a dumb suggestion, but when your making those stitching holes with the 6 prong fork thing and you wanted them to match the top & bottom row. Could you have a second fork and stick them together (with or without a space between) and have a 2x6 prong fork so you make the bottom & top row stitch holes at the same time? then maybe you might not have to spend as much time trying to make the stitching so precise.

Hi Robert- I love your work - particularly the belts. You inspired me to try the hand stitching- takes dedication. Any hints or suggestions on thread management? How long a section of thread do you work with?
Thanks for watching and commenting! I use a stitching pony mounted on the edge of my work bench. It has the stitching area about 42 inches from the ground. The result is that you can have nearly 15 feet of thread in use without it being in the ground. I use up to 4 times the length of the belt for each side. The biggest belt that I have stitched was for a finished length of 52”. So the belt blank was 62”. That would be 240” (20 feet) of thread on each side. That was a bunch to manage. This system works well for me.

I suppose I'm like many others, Chuck @ Weaver "taught" me to cross over the needles with each stitch, then pull through. I know that's the best way to do it for several reasons but in particular, it guarantees that you don't split your thread. I've noticed that you use the same method. I've personally gotten away from this method and went to single needle, pull mostly through, move in second needle and check that I didn't split into the thread. I've noticed that your stitching holes smoothly allow both needles to go in, cross and pull through. My stitching holes don't seem to be wide enough to easily do that. Question: Do you go back and widen your stitching holes before starting to sew or do you just punch through deep enough in the first place?
Thanks for asking about the stitching. It took me a long time to get them to look like I wanted them too. A little depending on what I stitch, I use the 5mm chisels from weaver. They do create a hole that works well for me. Some times they are too big in thinner leather. It doesn’t fight me too much if I stitch right after making the holes. If you wait until the next day it’s a little tougher as the holes start to close up. I have a thinner set from Makers that I use when stitching thinner leather like 8 oz or less. The holes are still fine. In the stitching pony I’m able to repeat the same process repeatedly and that fixed most of the issues that I was experiencing. Maybe I will do a video showing that. It might be a little bit of watching paint dry for some…. I appreciate your questions

Do you prefer water-based dye, then oil (Neatsfoot?), followed by resolene?
All I use is ProDye, oil (mostly Neatsfoot) then Resolene for belts that are dyed. TanKote for some projects
Nice belt Robert. I am new to leatherwork. What oz. leather are you using? Looks like you are putting two pieces together.
I use two 6 ounce layers. Smooth out on both sides.

How many hours of stitching on that belt?
My hand stitching has gotten faster. Still at least 4 hours

How many pieces of thread did you use to stitch the belt?
There was four total. Each was from the tip to the end of the belt. That belt has around 55 feet of thread in it.
