    I would like to mention this, in case anyone has trouble - That if you end up having your pi behind NAT and setup a port forward respectively. Unless you have a static IP on your home network, this can change frequently depending on your ISP. I believe something like dynamic DNS would allow you to make calls to your webhook, without having to constantly update your WAN IP/Port Forward on your router. Food for thought! Thanks for the video Chuck. Best wishes!

    Thank you for this very informative video. I've got a few questions about pi.hole though.
    Why do you run it in the cloud? What's the benefit? Or is it just for easier IFTTTTT demonstration?
    I've been running pi.hole from a raspi for about a year now and I'm very happy with it. But you got me hooked on to docker. I'm thinking about running pi.hole from my Synology. Is there anything specific I need to check on the Synology NAS?
    I already run another docker on it. I just don't want to slow down my network if the bottleneck is the NAS. However when I check the raspi it's pretty much idle all the time despite handling about 20 devices' network traffic.
    I also use pi.hole as my DHCP. I don't know why exactly. It's just happened to be. On which device would you recommend to be the DHCP?

      I am still building my Python Virtual Assistant (which already includes her own IFTT :P) so i haven't tested this as it is further in my automation plans, but i suspect that if you logout from the PiHole webpage the command won't work (just a guess). Otherwise as i did with mine, make your commands or scripts work only if your smartphone is connected to the internal network (because nowadays smartphone is our 3rd hand) so if you are not home the command won't execute (still i am talking with a custom python program on my mind, i have never used Alexa or any other Virtual Assistant).

    • @ShadySayed
      @ShadySayed Před 4 lety +1

      @@Noulis7 Logging out won't help as the the shell script talks directly to the PiHole. You can always make things only work if your phone is on your network and have your phone VPN back to your home. I do that as it also makes my phone use PiHole to block ads while I am away from home.

  • @jeremiahnichols8272

    I had to use Portainer to get this to setup correctly. Every time I would try to run a bash script or run a command in the terminal I would have some kind of error occur or pi-hole would time out attempting to even start. Works great now though. Love seeing all the blocked queries.

  • @actng

    awesome video chuck! pihole is great for blocking ads on mobile devices where you can't really setup an ad blocker to block ads in a mobile game for instance. i've been wanting a video like this - ppl rave about pihole but all the videos out there tell you to buy a pi, when i really just want to run it locally on a server but don't want to dedicate a whole pc to do it, so a container is perfect. thank you for this video i can't wait to try it.

    • @brucemclean449
      @brucemclean449 Před 3 lety +1

      @Bobby Tawil CZcams is one of the best sources for this. When I need to learn something new, there are plenty of videos to choose from.

    This is a great video and we want more :D Could you do an extended version or just a part two of this, where you go through how Docker networks should be set up and set up a reverse proxy to host all your different apps (running in their own Dockers via docker-compose) on you home network through Pihole's local DNS - hope this makes sense :)

    Your docker videos got my very interested. Went out and got a pi 4 and starting playing. Went down the home automation home and Installed homeassistant and hope you use that and grafana to manage / monitor everything with an IP in my house. Thoughts on a long video on setting something like this up at your place?

    hey Chuck, can I suggest you guys include Viptella in CBT nuggets? Since cisco sucks so bad at teaching anything I am struggling so bad right now learning viptella. Talk to the guys and set up a series. Love my subscription, and love your videos!!

    @NetworkChuck Can you share the full build script and/or the files you used on the back end for Flask and Python. It seems some of your Pi-Hole container is out of date and I would like to build this for myself but could REALLY use a working starting point like this!
    Thanks for all you do. I appreciate your work and content.

    CZcamsr knows how he gets fed, doesn't block CZcams.
    Also add unbound as your upstream in pi-hole and keep your DNS queries local and direct.

    Amazing video! Using these services for years now as well. One question though: How did you trigger the webhook without saying "trigger" in the intro? Is there something about IFTTT that I've been missing? b.r.

    • @NetworkChuck
      @NetworkChuck  Před 4 lety +3

      Ah, good catch. You can now setup an Alexa routine with ifttt as the action. As long as you have these ifttt recipes setup as Alexa as the trigger, they will show up in the Alexa app as an available action.

    I blame Chuck for this... Since watching this video I have set up 3 docker containers on my machine (pihole, dhcp, and httpd). Damn you Chuck!...
    No really thanks and keep on the good work.

    Thanks a lot, your videos are the main reason I got into the Pi world and it allowed me to do a lot of stuff I thought I'd have to spend $$$ to get.
    Just one question regarding this one, does your version of Pihole support raspberry pi? every time I try to install it on a Pi i get an error so maybe it doesn't support arm architecture
