  • CANTERBURY | Tour of Canterbury City Centre
This is a short walking tour of Canterbury to show the city centre streets and what's here!
Also watch our video of Whitby 👉🏻 • WHITBY TOUR | Full tou...
This is a walk through Canterbury City Centre showing the historic streets and buildings here on a very windy day! Canterbury was quiet when I filmed this (just coming out of lockdown) hence the empty streets.
It was strange to see Canterbury City Centre so quiet but I thought I'd document it anyway so you could see it for yourself.
I like the buildings here. ther'es some fantastic historical buildings all around Canterbury City Centre to see.
Canterbury, a cathedral city in southeast England, was a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Ancient walls, originally built by the Romans, encircle its medieval centre with cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. Canterbury Cathedral, founded 597 A.D., is the headquarters of the Church of England and Anglican Communion, incorporating Gothic and Romanesque elements in its stone carvings and stained-glass windows.
Visitors flock to the incredible Canterbury Cathedral, which houses the famous shrine of medieval archbishop Thomas Beckett. St Augustine's Abbey and St Martin's Church are also spectacular historical sites, and together with the cathedral form a UNESCO heritage site.
Canterbury was voted as the fifth best place to live in the UK and the best in Kent. It was voted as the 31st best place for architectural beauty and the 58th best for quality of life. The average family home costs £480,000 which puts it as one of the best places to live in the country.
Canterbury has been a European pilgrimage site of major importance for over 800 years since the assassination of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. Today it is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in England.

Canterbury is wonderful. My wife and I love visiting there. I know that chain stores have moved in but so what. There are far more independent shops than chain stores. The historic charm is off the charts along with great restaurants, tea shops and pubs among many other things. We will be back. Oh, and at 1:20 our local when we’re in town.

Apart from the Cathedral and a couple of cafes, Canterbury has lost most of it's charm and atmosphere. The flagship store, Fenwicks, is surrounded by the usual UK grot, like Poundland, Greggs and McDonalds, which attracts all the fat, junk DNA types whose eyebrows meet in the middle. The shopping centre, the concrete jungle, design-influenced by some old timers in the local council who have the most myopic view of what makes a decent centre. With all the history Canterbury has, and the amazing opportunity they had to design something special, they just build dull, shapeless, Communist looking buildings and write some meaningless scrawl on the pavement where some artefacts were found. Debenhams has gone, Past Times, Nasons, the list goes on. The usual suspects like Prezzo, NEXT, Zizzi, ASK, etc all blandly line the street, and the Marlowe Theatre thrives on irritating pantomimes for those parents who think this is entertaining, or old 1930s jazz nights. Bath, York, Cambridge, Bristol, Winchester are wealthy and beautiful and business thrives; as well as having intelligent conversation and people worth talking to. Canterbury has no real money, no decent business in the high street lasts and the only intelligent conversation is from a foreign visitor who is generally greeted by the stench of fried sausages and burgers in the high street, and feral school kids shrieking like apes and shouting at each other as if they all have attention deficit syndrome. A very sad, dull and lifeless place to be, compared to 20 years ago.

@@adamant5419 Couldn't agree more. Although living just 2 miles away we prefer Ashford for shopping. Note the e-bike and food delivery cycle riding through the pedestrinised street. And the Archbishop of Canterbury does not reside there, his residence is Lambeth Palace in London.

Maybe it was empty because people have gone to the coastal areas for holidays? Or headed into London to catch the royals? They won't be here in Australia, because Adelaide & the east coast are having a good old wet, windy & cold winter.
