- Since posting--and then deleting--that disastrous thread about Sonic the Hedgehog, The Google Play Twitter account hasn't posted a SINGLE THING and it's getting WEIRD.

My theory: The person in charge of the social media account was already leaving, perhaps suddenly.
Google didn't want posts to stop, but they needed time to hire someone new. Then someone suggested, "Hey, AI is pretty good now, right? Let's just have an AI post in the meantime!" The Sonic thread was the glorious debut of a hastily integrated AI that was put in charge on short notice. Now that they discovered that was a trainwreck of an idea, they are simply waiting while they find a new social media manager.
Just something to think about, Google Play posted a similarly confusing post about Geometry Dash a while back. The post is like a thank you letter for mothers day that reads “You Manix-ed the mom level” Manix is a player in the community idk what getting “Manix-ed” means and obviously there is no mom level. This being so random and including Manix a player which a normal Google Play employee wouldn’t find by searching up stuff about Geometry Dash leads me to think maybe they have been using ai or have used it multiple times in the past
They're gonna have a real hard time finding one after this.
Maybe they fired whoever was in charge of the page, gave the job to AI, and immediately regretted it
This is what my mind went to as well. If that is what happened, even if they tried to hire everybody back, I would totally understand why they'd refuse. So maybe there's just nobody handling that account anymore.

@chiquita683 well there actually is a pretty clear difference between a game dev and the social media guy for a google app. In general it's tragic if anyone loses their job and gets into financial trouble, but if someone got fired here, it was the person who was essentially just a professional twitter feed clutterer. Just posting ads day in day out. That's not something I have nearly as much respect or understanding for as making tangible contributions to video games, which are an art medium I greatly respect and enjoy.
That thread really was them having a stroke and they died.
My guess is the social media manager was going to quit, and was like "lets do something REAALLY FUCKIN FUNNY"
Or maybe they were getting laid off and purposefully made an AI-like nonsensical post to just rank Google’s credibility 🤔

Arlo, this whole situation confounded me so much. I work in comms at one of the largest companies in the world. I took this to my boss. We took it to our team. We analyzed it with our enterprise social tools to see the brand effect. We have no answers. I literally lost nights of sleep thinking about this.

I reckon the social media team/manager was replaced with AI before the post was made. The AI makes a weird thread that makes no sense, but since the team has been disbanded nobody is there to manage the account properly and take the post down right away. And now the silence is Google waiting to fill the job vacancy for a role they thought was replaceable with AI.
What's worse is they claim that it wasn't AI and that "the team made a mistake".
I think we know what that mistake really was...
And if you thought the text wasn't enough proof, the last image in the thread, which showed a frame of Sonic Prime, has Big smeared into a weird messy building thing. Further proof of AI usage.

I am not happy that my first and only thought is that Google fired their community management team in favor of an AI and were completely unprepared when that AI immediately self-destructed.
I just presume there is literally no one there to do anything.
Heres more to add the dystopian of it all. Probably fired the social media team thinking an inhouse developed AI assistant could do it. First post went bad so now they are either looking for a team again (unlikely) or retraining the ai and maybe getting someone to watch over its posts and bring it back.

What a weird time that reporting on literal nothing is actually worth talking about.
And I don't mean it in that "this is a nothing story", but rather this is a story "where" nothing happened. Which is strange and that's _why_ it is news. Like can we all just take a step back and realize that we are living in a time that, if nothing is happening, THAT'S when things are strange.
It's wild to me how busy this world is when you put it in that perspective.

Google made themselves look very bad here. Like, SEGA doesn't want their IP portrayed like this. Presumably they paid Google for them to make a Twitter thread about Sonic. Imagine, like, paying for an ad on Google's Twitter profile, and then they do your IP this dirty. So SEGA's upset, without a doubt. Maybe Google Play stopped posting because nobody wants to buy an ad slot after this fiasco? Not to mention that Google is trying to push AI and just scared everyone away from the idea.
They're busy planning out how to top that thread.
Google Play taking the time to actually educate themselves on Sonic history and lore. If they entered that rabbit hole who knows how long it will take them to escape it. Lol
In retrospect, a lot of this weirdness was explained when Google introduced their ai-based search system

Incidentally the algorithm recommended that video to me pretty strongly (and this one as well), which is pretty funny considering CZcams and Google Play are part of the same corporate structure.

They re-tweeted the Google twitter literally the same day this video was posted lol. They RT'd Android twitter on the 14th and posted a Clash of Clans promo themselves on the 16th (which is either today or tomorrow as it's 11:46PM here)

These were not part of the Only Pink bags. Every single post on twitter talking about their absurd amount of pinks would only get a reply from Starburst saying they were "lucky" or something along those lines. There was never any explanation. There was no apology. Just a sheer mass volume of Pink Starbursts amongst the population that came and went. And it happened TWICE!

The odds of all the Starbursts being pink in a bulk pack is so astronomically low (if the odds of each candy being any 1 of the 4 original flavors is 1/4) that something has to be going on, but there has never been an official explaination
Not only that, but they actually briefly made an All Pink Special Edition pack and now there's a "FavREDs" version

I swear to god, what happened was two executives got into an argument behind the scenes because the account was getting incredibly low numbers. Nintendo just dropped Twitter so I bet one executive at google fired the ad guy, and another said, “no, we need that!” And used ai to make a post. Immediately afterwards he was probably informed it’s illegal to use ai in media without informing the viewer, thus the deletion. After that they probably threw in the towel 100%.

As a Sonic fan since the Genesis days, this is pretty par for the course. Once you step back from the Sonic fandom itself and look at it with the kind of dispassion one views museum pieces, the entire franchise's history is really quite funny.
You know what I learned today from the WVFRM podcast? Google INVENTED the transformer model, which is the generative AI model that GPT and others are based on.
The funniest thing would be if it really was an AI because it's the worst LLM I've seen since like 2018
They clearly decided AI could do the work of a social media manager and fired him. When they took the AI offline there was no human around to fill its role.
I've been so happy with this channel. Arlo kinda snaps my brain into a good wholesome wavelength. It's kinda like a nice little escape where I can just thik about nintendo and video games like I did as a kid when life was simpler. Glad to have it on a more frequent basis
They had to have had an AI automatically writing and posting tweets for a while before this. My guess is they gave the AI a prompt that was too vague like "make a thread about Sonic" and that thread is what it pumped out. Since no one was actually running the account, they literally have no idea what to do with it now.
I really hope this sonic tweet thread isn't one of those Harambe-style timeline splitting moments where nothing was the same afterward

Y’know what the weirdest part of this is to me? I would’ve assumed these companies would have to approve what the Google Play Twitter account posts about their apps, because it’s a form of marketing for their products and could potentially throw off their brand synergy, but the fact that the official Sonic The Hedgehog account publicly responded to it with obvious befuddlement seems to indicate that that is not the case.

The way that social posts work in business is you have a piece of management software that autoposts the content on a certain day at a certain time that you decide. This is why it still posts on weekends even though the higher ups that approve posts don’t actually work the weekend. You tend to make the post often 2-3 weeks in advance so it has time to go through the management approval method, possibly longer if you have multiple channels you’re managing at once (like if you’re managing multiple brands or multiple platforms for the same brand). What’s probably happened is they had to scrape everything on their socials manager because of the response and now they just don’t have anything to post until the higher ups approve a new batch. Or deleting the thread broke/paused the system some how and they haven’t noticed because they don’t actually care about Twitter.
i assume that account is a testing grounds for learning algorithms (probably gemini), and when they realized how terrible that thread was they pulled it and are now waiting for the algorithm to get better
