      AMEN TO THIS!!! I have washed my hair every other day for as long as I can remember and will never not LOL. I feel gross the next day and just ignore it so I’m not washing literally every day but…the struggle.

    Glad someone is finally talking about this. I tried hair training for literal years and thought I was doing something wrong because my hair never stopped being greasy the day after I washed. There’s nothing wrong with washing daily if that’s what your hair needs. There’s also nothing wrong with throwing the grease up in a bun. 😅

    So happy to hear this. I tried for years to train my hair, but there isn’t a single dry shampoo that keeps my oils at bay for an entire day. I’m just a greasy gal. I have to wash every day. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been shamed for being a daily washer. I’ve also tried so many products to assist with air drying and it always looks flat and gross. Blow drying it is! With heat protectant of course 😊

      I have the same hair as you and started using olaplex 3 and amika’s soul food mask. They have transformed my flat greasy hair! I only need to wash twice a week which is unheard of for me.

      @@Joannabanana1989 I absolutely love that amika mask! I have blonde, thick, coarse hair that just… isn’t soft. The hair strand is dry and rough and the amika mask is one of the only things I’ve found that gives me softness that actually lasts until the next wash. Obsessed!

      You should use pureology strength cure shampoo/conditioner it’s soooo clarifying and will strengthen the bonds in your hair at the same time! I swear by it. It’s expensive but a little goes a long way bc it’s the only thing I’ve tried that allows me to wash every other day without looking greasy.

    Great research! I’m so happy to have confirmation on air drying vs blow drying. I have been convinced for years that blow drying my hair helps me go an extra couple of days between washes. I’m glad to see science backs up this theory.

    Finally this needed to be said. So many people don’t wash their hair cuz of the myth that the more they wash it the greasier it gets so they “hair train” yet their hair still looks gross even a year into “hair training”. I use to think so too then I noticed my hair and scalp is actually 5x healthier from more frequent washing & now it doesn’t fall out as much as when I’d only wash it 1-2 a week

      Girl yes. I knew a girl in high school who was doing this hair training bs and her hair was gross. Hair needs to be washed.. how often depends on you.

      You generally lose between 50-100 hairs a day I think, but washing less frequently would generally mean that you've had a couple of extra days for hair to fall out of the scalp but stay in your hair. So you would normally look like there's more hair loss when washing less frequently. Not that I think you're wrong though! You know your hair 😊

    I have been told sooo many times to wash my oily hair less and it made no sense to me. I also have oily skin and would never consider not washing my face in order to "train" my sebaceous glands. I believe they also teach this myth at some beauty schools as someone I know told me she learned it there. Thankfully my hairdresser does not peddle this nonsense!

    Thank you for brining this up because this is a struggle I have. My hair is just irrationally oily and I have to use medicated shampoo almost daily to keep from having an itchy, painful scalp. So many women have tried to convince me that the shampoo is the problem.

    Lol I wish I could turn back time and just wash my hair. In my 5 years of highschool I gaslighted myself into thinking that leaving my hair as greasy as possible was making it healthy and be less oily.

    Thank you for this video! I tried for 8 months to train my hair and no matter what my hair was greasy the next day. I started feeling so down because I thought I was doing something wrong even though I was doing SO much to prevent oil and promote healthy hair.
    I started to realize that at day 4, my scalp would become super itchy, which I had never experienced. I was having bad buildup of dry shampoo, which I noticed after itching my scalp and having gunk under my fingernails 🤢. I started not listening to everyone on the internet and started washing every few days or about twice a week and my hair is so much better for it. Definitely listen to your hair and do what’s right for you.

      Exactly! Like I have thick naturally curly hair so I will need to wash my hair less and likely do wash my hair less than someone with fine, straight hair. We’re both taking good care of our hair by doing what works best for us

    I always ask them to “please show me the legitimate studies backing up your claims.” Let’s just say it never happens. 🙂

    The hair training myth is annoying me for many years at this point. I have a very, very oily scalp and all I can find online about the topic is this bullshit. I need a real solution and NO, I am not washing my hair too much! Following this logic my hands should be dripping in oil because I wash them multiple times a day.

    I'm so glad you made this video. I feel like there has been so much fear mongering and shame about washing your hair multiple times a week insinuating you are damaging your hair. For someone who can really only go 2, maybe 3 days, before having really oily hair I wash multiple times a day when I need to and my hair is perfectly healthy. I've always hated the concept of "hair training" and glad you put research out here to back that up!

    Thank you queen. I let the no-poo and hair training girlies make me think there was something wrong with me and my super oily hair, but now I just live my life and wash like every other day haha. Also for all the other oily hair girlies out there, I highly recommend the l'oreal elvive clay rebalancing shampoo. It's a life-saver! I can now go a few days without washing if I have that shampoo. Do not try the native shampoo if you have oily hair. Worst my hair has ever felt!!!! SO COATINGY AND GROSS!

    People who think hair training worked for them are just using dry shampoo or they finished going through puberty which is when for many people hormone and oil production even out a little anyway. And also colouring your hair can make you think your scalp produces less oil when in fact your much more porous hair is absorbing it all. I had way less oily hair when I bleached it.

    Idk if there’s science behind it, but your instinct about boar bristles removing sebum is absolutely right. I have always been told by hairdressers-and it’s absolutely my experience too-that boar bristles help move the sebum off your scalp and better distribute it over the shaft of your hair. It’s one of my biggest hair “secrets” for years to keep me from having greasy roots and dry ends. I swear by it when I need another day until washing.

    Yeah when I was on the pill for years and didn't have oily hair or skin. Then came off the pill had 3 kids in 5.5 years and then all those hormones gifted unwanted oily skin, hair and adult acne. There's no training that shit and I really thought I could. Just have to accept if I wanna have clean hair I need to wash every two days. The acne on the other hand ugh even tret and a good skin care routine doesn't help it 😭

    This kind of science and debunking is so amazing and finally saying the things I already believed in against the “trend” of how people took care of their hair or would tell me to care for my hair.
    I am someone who has to wash their hair every other day and air dry in the summer, blow dry in the winter as my hair won’t dry fast enough. Please keep doing these kinds of videos because is spreads the scientific awareness of stopping people from believing in the lies people get on a bandwagon about.

However I have fine, low density hair, that doesn't hold a style without a lot of product. So twice a week works for scalp and hair health for me. Thank you for all your hard work!!     I never realized how different scalps and hair types can be until I had my little girl. I have super oily straight fine hair and she has curly dry to the bone hair and scalp that I only wash once a week. I wash every day but she can go weeks and not get oily.

    Finally someone said it. I’ve been trying to train my hair for about 6 years now. Both has ever worked for me. I really hate the feeling of dry shampoo and grease, which is mainly a sensory issue for me. I’ve always felt like I was doing something wrong because these people on the internet with wash day perfect tell me that it been 2 weeks since their last wash. I will go three days tops without washing my hair but man it’s rough getting there. I have spent about a month in the hospital over the past 5 months without showers (don’t judge me; I was really hoping I’d be able to go home and shower) Thank you for this video validating my thoughts since I was a small 17 year old

    I get so tired of people saying if you get oily hair your should try training your hair. I mean it really makes no sense. There are 3 main factors on how often you should wash your hair/how fast your hair gets oily.
    1. The most importantly is your genetics and you can’t change that
    2. Where you live, cold climate = slower to produce oil, hot climate = going to sweat and produce oils like crazy
    3. What kind of job/labor you do. Inside ac not doing physical activity or doing physical laboring jobs outside
    Also, the misconception that shampoo and conditioner harms the hair if I remember correctly was about shampoo from the 80’s. Most shampoo/conditioner won’t damage your hair if you wash it daily even cheaper options should be relatively fine.
    People who “train their hair” probably could always wash their hair ever 3-7 days but never knew it because they never tried but their other people who’s limits is ever day to every other day. Don’t be ashamed on how often or not you wash your hair.

And I feel you on adding that extra wash day 😅 I went to washing once a week looong time ago bc of convenience not hair training, even though I have curly hair and that is what’s advised. I learned about hair training way later and was glad to learn from your video today about how it’s a myth. Makes sense.     I never even considered hair training because I have dandruff and thus, very oily scalp. The limit for me is 2, maaaybe 3 days before I start looking like I poured olive oil on my scalp and it can get very itchy. So not washing your scalp for more than say a week seems like torture for me (because I have gone about a week without washing my hair because I just didn't leave the house). Those people ho don't wash their hair in like a month are mad people. Also, I need strong surfactants, so I love sulfates.

    Great video as usual. You inspire me a lot in creating my own content here on YT as well. I have been watching videos where this Mexican dermatologist who has a book available in English says that we should wash our hair every day and maybe every other day if you have a dryer scalp. I think he says this based on the perspective of the hygiene of the scalp but not looking into the impact that water can have on the hair. However, I agree with you it’s perhaps a matter of needs and preference.

      Also yeah I have also noticed the same with blow drying. My hair definitely gets less grease using a blow dryer plus it just gives more volume than just letting it air dry.

      Also supplements, if you mean vitamins and biotin and these things, are proven not to work unless you have a serious deficit. The average person shouldn't develop a serious deficit and if you do then speaking with a doctor or nutritionist would be the best option to see how you can get in better shape.
      Just to take biotin as an example because I feel like this is a common supplement advertised for healthy hair. Just because you increase your biotin intake doesn't mean you'll increase your keratin production. If your body has enough biotin (and it does if you aren't sick or have a particularly restrictive diet or something like that), the excess biotin consumed as a supplement will just be eliminated in the urine.

    In the middle ages, people cleaned their hair by combing it daily with a fine wooden comb. There's a program featuring historian Ruth Goodman who explains how this works. By keeping their hair covered and combed, they were able to keep their hair and scalp clean without washing with surfactants.

    I started training my hair over a year ago and treating it better literally thanks to all of your videos but my hair still gets greasy after one day and I was wondering if I was just not using the right products for my hair or doing something wrong 🤷🏼‍♀️
    It makes sense now if hair training is not a thing 😅
    Well, now that I know this, I might have to think about going back to washing my hair maybe twice a week because I can't get it to look as good as yours after day 4-5 (I have similar hair to yours: a good amount - although not as much - of naturally blonde fine hair).
    I also only use natural products, which means I don't use dry shampoo in a spray but in a powder and it just doesn't do the job as well as spray; but at least it's got no toxic ingredients in it.
    Thanks for sharing your new knowledge, it gives some perspective on things 😊
    And as for the hack of blow drying and not air drying, does that mean you don't air dry at all? I remember in one of your videos, you said you'd let your hair air dry about 80% and then blow dry. So, I'm just curious as to what you do now?? I literally went to the hairdresser's today and they gave me that hack of blow drying to prevent the hair from sticking to the scalp and absorbing as much oil, all the while giving more movement.

    I started “hair training” when I was about 17 and after about 6 years I realized my hair was never going to not be greasy by day 2 (I have naturally super oily hair/skin). Not only that but dry shampoo clogging my scalp probably didn’t help. So I’ve felt like this was true for a while, but thought maybe my hair was just so much more oily than average. Thanks for doing the research and breaking it down!❤️

    I used to be very conscious about my hair too in my teens and twenties. I couldn’t leave the house as I felt very dirty from the greasy hair and used to wash my hair almost all days. Now I’m almost 39 I found a healthy balance and wash 2/3 per week. It gets a little greasy by day 3, but nothing a bun can’t handle. A bun was unthinkable then hahaha, but with age and 2 little kids aside, you learn to be a bit relaxter ..

    Blow drying and reducing sulfates to less than once a month have helped me tremendously. My hair used to get so oily it would feel and look wet 😭 Now it just goes flat if I don't wash it for five days.

    I did a research project on shampoo for my public speaking class. Found a veeeery long book (over 700 pages) that had hard data on this. It was pretty exciting to be able to correct disinfo in a random school project.

    Abbey you are the best. I appreciate this video so much. As someone with both highly oily skin and hair and sebbhoreic dermatitis I have tested Hair Training myself for a number of years and never saw an improvement. I love how you back up all your claims with science.

    I noticed when I started bleaching all of my hair, I could go a week between washes because my hair wasn't greasy. Then when I started letting my natural hair grow back, my scalp has been a lot greasier so I have to wash every 3-4 days instead. I know now that the bleach was damaging my hair and stripping out all of the natural oils. You hear so many things about how often you should or shouldn't be washing your hair... just do what you want!

    Ive washed my hair every time i showered since i was a kid. It was difficult to separate the two. This meant daily as i went through puberty. Then i worked at nursing and hroup homes and felt disgudting if I didn't wash the germs out of my hair, especially during covid. Now im in my late 20s and trying to figure out what is actually healthy for my hair. Ive gone from every day to every other day, not because im training my hair, but i think ive been in the trap of "if i dont wash tonight my hair will be super greasy by noon tomorrow." Im learning different hairstyles, sleeping in braids, and trying to not just wash on impulse. But if i go longer, my scalp gets SO itchy, my face neck and back feels oily, i just feel gross. Im sensitive to dry shampoo and dont think they are actually healthy. If my hair is oily and itchy, im going to wash it. Im shifting towards not washing proactively before i need to, and trying to actually let my body tell me what it needs.

    If there are people in this world whose scalps produce coconut oil or argan oil, then I would agree that this valuable nourishment for the hair is not wantonly removed by daily washing.
    However, as long as it is only sebum in the form of sweat and dirt, I refuse to leave it on my head any longer than necessary. Apart from that, I find it unhygienic and disgusting.

    This reminded me of a girl on YT who said she washed her hair every day, her hair was luscious, very very long and healthy, I think like all the things about hair it's all due to genetics, hormones, diet, vitamin intake and lastly it's due to haircare, your hair won't magically become thick and long just because you wash it less. For me personally having normal hair which only becomes greasy if I use too much conditioner or if I didn't clarify in a while and dry if I don't use the right products, I wash my hair twice a week just because it's the right solution for my hair not because I force myself to not wash it, for example I'm not able to go for a whole week without washing it as my mom who naturally has curly hair even though she always straightens it now...

    Such an informative video! So touching on how nothing we do affects how much oil our sebaceous glands create (washing more or less) is it also a myth that overly drying the skin on our face or body will cause the skin to overcompensate by making more oil? I've heard this been said to people with acne or oily skin that hydration and moisture will make the skin produce less sebum 🤔

    Thank you so much for this video! I tried hair training for months and it wasn't helping, just made me feel dirtier and my made my scalp more itchy. I can understand that washing your hair more often may strip your ends but I've never had a problem with that since my hair used to get oily from top to bottom when I washed it less, and bc I get regular cuts and don't use heat tools. I also agree abt the hormonal info bc with puberty, my hair started getting super greasy and I noticed during years when my hormones were more out of whack, my hair was also more greasy. Thank you again!!! ❤🥰

    I recently tried to go from washing alternate days to washing twice a week and while I was able to get it done using combination of dry shampoos and hair oil, my hair was definitely flaky by day 4. And I also noticed a significant increase in hairfall directly from the scalp (not breakage) when I go too long between washes. I am now back to alternate day washes with a couple cheat days here and there and my scalp is happy for it.
    Hair is such a YMMV thing that blanket statements just don’t hold true for most people.

    I usually wash on the 5th day except. My scalp gets too itchy from volume sprays. That's perfect for me since my hair really doesn't get oily. ❤️

    This makes me feel better, I have tried to train my hair before, but I just feel gross and itchy when I don't wash my hair every 2 (occasionally 3) days. I'm pretty oily and even my hairdresser said 'everyone knows their hair best. Don't try to train your hair if it doesn't work for you!'
    Plus my hair dries straight and I rarely heat style so I don't have to restyle every time I wash.

    I live in a tropical country and I cannot fathom people who live here and only wash their hair 1x a week. I've seen their hair. They have bad hair day more often than having good hair day. So I wash my hair every other day or everyday if it's very hot and humid

    I used to have fine hair and lots of it, but now that I'm an old lady, I have fine and not very much hair. I have found a comfortable system for me is twice a week. I was a daily washer, but it was too much work, and honestly with the blow drying and flat iron, or curling iron, I was creating a lot of damage. Thank you Abbey for the solid research and truth telling. YES...we are actually training ourselves lol:) P.S. I 100% believe that blow drying helps stretch wash days out!

    so glad to see this. I also tried hair training my hair... I think some people with extremely thin hair (like myself) just need to wash their hair every day. Every one of my friends that touches my hair says I have the thinnest hair they've ever felt!

    I have spent the last 2+ years trying to train my hair with no success, my scalp is just greasy. Now over the last year my hair has lost elasticity causing a devastating amount of breakage that I am now trying to repair and recover from. Do you think it is possible that my attempts at hair training have actually caused more damage than anything?

      Well what did you do? it could be the buildup combined with any heat styling you did that weakened it so much.

      @@personmcdudeguy I didn't excessively hear style, once MAYBE twice a week. Since I noticed this damage nearly a year ago I hardly ever heat style, I've been trying to baby my hair as much as possible.
      However, I did find I needed various products to keep my hair manageable between washes... Oil/serum/something for moisture and shine on ends, dry shampoo for roots. But applying these products pretty much daily so I could see how that would build up and be a possible issue when heat styling even once with all that on my hair. Even using quality products, silk pillowcase, sleep styles (all the common suggestions), nothing helped my hair after sleeping on it - weird cowlicks, bends from even big silk scrunchies, straw like ends, ugh.
      I'm now thinking I need to accept that every other day is the best I'm going to get and spend the next 2 years repairing the damage this lengthy experiment caused 😪
      Btw, that got super long winded lol. But I feel like I did all the usual suggestions right and my hair just didn't like it

      @@emilyf1013 the only thing i can think of its that the building in your scalp affected they way you hair grow/maybe the hair produced during that time is somehow weaker bc of the unclean scalp? But other than that I can't see how dead protein cells (hair) could lose elasticity from your scalp being dirty

    I have been saying for years what you just said. You don't train you scalp to produce less oil, you train yourself to get used to your hair not being washed every day. I used to wash every day when my hair was straight because I just liked the feel of really clean hair. When my hair turned curly due to menopause, I didn't want to have to style it every day. I found through trial and error that I can go 2 or 3 days between washes. Both my scalp and my face got more oily in my later years so I adapted to those changes. I hope more and more people realize that this method is a lot of hooha and stop perpetuating this myth.

    Ever since I got better quality shampoo/conditioner and started double shampooing, I’m able to go a week/ week and a half before washing… depending on how much styling I do, as I feel like hairspray helps control my sebum.

    Abbey, thank you for talking about something so important and so controversial. I have a follow up question tho, I would love it if you could answer. If its true that we cant make our hairs oil slow down by washing it less, is the opposite also the case? Isnt it also false then, that we can make our hair produce oil faster by washing it more often (or what people always call “stripping it,” leading the glands to “overcompensate”)?

    When I used to use SLS and strong shampoos my hair was very oily the day after I washed so I washed it with shampoo every day! then I went no poo and I had a month long transition period where my hair was super super oily and didn't look good. Then with time it evened out and years have gone by and my hair is never oily anymore whether I wash it 1 day later or a month later.

    Living in a humid environment & being super oily all the time - it drove me insane when people told me i shouldn’t wash my hair every day!! They all had thicker hair too, but didn’t realize fine hair can look so greasy quickly lol. i moved away to a less humid environment, and now i can get away with extending my wash if i am feeling lazy 😅

    I know this is an old video but where does Cocamidopropyl betaine fall on the surfactent chart. Sould that be under Amphotheric? I recently discovered I'm allergic to this ingredient soooo I'm trying to learn more about it.

    I worked with a girl with really thick long hair. EVERY SINGLE DAY she’d come in and her roots would be filthy and covered in dandruff. Once a week, when she washed it, it looked shiny and healthy. She even admitted that she never got compliments on her hair except on wash day. 😅

    can you do a deeper dive into the science behind different types of hair brushes for different types of hair/scalps? I have a very oily sensitive scalp with fine dark brown thin straight easily tangley hair (which is like the worst combo in my opinion) so I try to wash my hair every other day but if a different hairbrush will help make my second day hair look less greasy without being too rough/breaking it off/pulling it out-I’m all ears. When it gets greasy, it just looks thinner. I currently use the Olivia Garden fingerbrush vented (in the small size) from Ulta because of how gentle it is on my hair. I also wear a satin/silk hair covering at night to keep skin care from creeping toward my scalp or rubbing into my hair from the pillow. I can’t do dry shampoo-my scalp rejects it like an allergy.

    YAY! I'm so glad you made this video - the comment section was wild (in a good way) on your TikTok.
    My new hair stylist gave me some advise and I'm curious what you think about it. I have a very oily scalp and was washing my hair about every other day or sometimes every 2 days and I would just double shampoo and condition. The stylist told me that I should not be double shampooing. Instead I should use shampoo + conditioner on my hair and the next day just conditioner. I'm suppose to repeat that cycle so every day I'm conditioning my hair, but only using shampoo every other day. From your research is there any science explaining why she would recommend this routine?
